My salesman said if you run a tank of regular the service engine light will come on. I don't know whether to believe that as I have run an 04 Murano (premium recommended) for 80000 km with no issues.
I respect the EX's capabilities as a sporty drive however and have stuck to premium for that.

By the way I drive Calgary/Edmonton return once a week and have found driving at 116km/hr vs 121km/hr uses 1 litre/100km less or almost $7 per week. It takes 6 minutes longer at the slower speed on a 3 hour trip.

We just ran a Full Tank of Mid-Grade through... with NO Check-Engine Light appearing.

I just put a Full Tank of Premium in and it cost $94.00

Maybe going from Premium to Regular is too much of a difference... and using Mid-Grade was OK ?

Thoughts ?

Been using midgrade from day 1. No problem. You know, in CA and the US NE, if it says 89 octane its probably more like 90 anyways since that's a baseline they have to meet for regulatory purposes, whereas, when the car company makes its recommendation, they aren't thinking about it that way. Still $82 a tank though. And them's American dollars. (Please, Canadians, I know your currency is worth more than ours, its a joke.)

We talked to the dealer when we took delivery, and they confirmed that regular gas usage will NOT impact on warranty - and we have been using it with no pinging at all, and no noticeable effect on power. We will check mileage performance and then go through a few tanks of premium to see what the difference is, if any.

The Premium is recomended but not required. It will not hurt the engine to use regular. At our dealership we recomend that if you use the regular to run a tank of Premium once in a while. Alot of our customers use regular in the 3.5 liter engine.

Mid grade, no problem. Except the $85 a tank. And I thought we went to war for chap gas. (Sorry, bad joke)

Premium is recommended but not required.

if you are just going to put around town and not push the loud pedal hard then regular is fine.

It costs me $80 to throw in 20 gal of premium, but since it is just the weekend car no biggy. I may put MAYBE 8k a year on this car. If I only get 300mi to a tank I'm still only spending about $2100 in gas a year. I don't think it'll break my bank because if it did I probably shouldn't have an EX.

I don't know about the EX, but for most cars the ECU will adjust for the worst case the car has been exposed to. If you run regular gas once the ECU will adjust for those conditions.

I wonder if that is the case with the EX?

it doesn't permanently adjust. It actively monitors the quality of the detonation and if it gets better or worse it adjusts the timing accordingly. You'll just work the knock sensor harder if you constantly alternate between regular and premium.

The interesting thing is the manual for the 08 G35 and the 08 G37 are the same. The manual recommends premium for both, but it differentiates between the two. It allows use of less than 91 octane for the G35 if 91 octane isn't available. However, it clearly stated that for a G37, if premium is not available, then use only the minimum amount needed to get to a source of 91 octane. This appears to give a nod to a VQ35HR running 87.
I believe the EX uses the same engine as the G35.

I've mixed 87 with 91 (alternating tanks) and never had a problem. But again, your mileage may vary.

I have ran 3 tanks of 89 during my current road trip. I haven't noticed any drop in mpg. With the latest tank of 89 I think I felt a little drop in power when passing at full throttle on 90+ degree day. It could have been the combination of the heat and the 89; or the gas I got in this tank isn't really 89 octane.

Most of what I've read says there might be around an 8 HP drop in power rom 91 to 87 octane (here in AZ it's 87, 89 and 91 octane). The sensors will compensate for the lower octane. There might be MORE additives in premium (I specifically heard that Chevron has more techron in their premium grade), but using regular grade shouldn't hurt. Just run a tank of premium through every 5th tank or so - OR -- buy a bottle of Techron additive and dump that in every couple of thousand miles.

I'm running premium because I am one of the most anal retentive people out there when it comes to my cars! Plus, it's only a $126 A YEAR difference if you drive 12K mile/year.

math; 12,000 miles / 19 miles/gal average = 632 gallons of petrol annually X $.20/gal premium for premium = $126.

My words of wisdom -- you spent $40K or more for the freakin' EX -- buy the premium!

I agree 100%. it costs me about $3-$4 more per fill up for the 93 octane. Whether it's proven or not I still believe that you get better performance and better mileage per gallon with premium. I have had an Audi A4 and an Audi TT and noticed a huge difference in horsepower and fuel economy with regular and premium gas. Although those cars say they require premium because of the turbo engine. Personally I think Infiniti only says premium fuel is recommended and not required is because gas prices are so high they don't want to chance on losing potential buyers because of the extra cost for premium fuel. I am willing to give up one Rita's large Misto shake per week to keep my EX happy and healthy. oh hell who am I kidding I will still get my 2-3 large cherry Misto shakes every week.
