Post Title: Synthetic Oil or not......
Posted by: tooloon at 7:37 AM 5/10/2008

Hello,

My 2007 M35 Sport is going in for it's 30 K service on Monday and I have been trying to decide if I should switch to synthetic oil or not....

I have used it in thepast on other vehicles and been happy....

Also, I do not have an Infiniti dealership close to me so I was going to get the service done at Nissan. They said they can do any service, just not warranty issues...

Anyone care to comeent one way or the other???

Thanks,

Alex

Use synthetic when you can; it provides better protection

Use it in my machine w/no problem. As an aside; I have been driving for over 40 years now. I have used the cheapest stuff available when I was young and ignorant-even let oil changes go by until the stuff was like black pudding. I have not been oil "compulsive" (for a better word).

I have yet to have an oil related problem w/any machine in all these 40 plus years. I think synthetic, expensive oils were created just to make us, street drivers feel better...

Pretty much boils it down to this:

if you live in a place where there is snow, ice, and freezing temperatures, then Synthetic is recommended because it cannot freeze.

if you live in So. Cal like I do, good old Mobil 1 regular oil is just fine.

ps: this topic has been debated from here to Istanbul on this forum. Do a quick search and you will see some other opinions.

The main reason for using synthetic (www.bobistheoilguy.com will get you started) is their extended envelope of performance, not necessarily extended changes.

The best oil is always fresh oil.

Also buy good gas like Chevron or Amoco. Keeps oil contamination to a minimum

I don't think your gas company makes a major difference. It's all about Octane. 91 all the way and you'll be fine (except for Arco...they are really cheap on quality).

Here is my gas station I fill up at in So. Cal: http://www.bp.com/sectiongener...28375

I switched my M35 to synthetic after about 15k miles.

Synthetic is better

I changed my M to synthetic at 49K miles. I have a small puddle on the garage floor now but It may have been from me not cleaning off the access door well enough. The puddle was fresh oil though and any mess I would have made on the door would have been in the draining process.

I'm a bit concerned so far.

I took some cleaner to the door, drain and filter area and wiped up the puddle. I'll take another look Tuesday and report back.

I've not had issues switching other cars over before but we'll see.

I went with synthetic (Mobil 1). I've always liked it better in my past vehicles... As for octane, I run on 94.... I love the car but I wish the gas milage was a bit better on my M35 though....

Thanks everyone,

Alex

Where do you get 94 octane from? (not that I would need anything higher than 91, I'm just curious because I have never seen anything higher than 91 at any gas stations)

That is not in California for sure ... other states have 93 available as Premium. I have not seen 94 though ...

Ummm, no, it can help. Chevron puts in "Techron" additive into their gas. Which is basically a diluted version of the stuff in BG-44K and it does keep fuel injectors cleaner tha other gas. No mileage improvements per se, but the engine runs better.

BG-44k have changed their formula.....for the worse. Doesn't contain the strong cleaning agents like the old forumula does which sucks.

So if it changed for the worse, is the bottle of Techron I'm adding every so often about as good as I can do myself?

I don't know for sure. You should at least use the stronger version of the Chevron Techron that is sold - there are two different bottles (I forget the exact info on the bottle).

Just don't add in more than one bottle (of the BG44K or the conc Chevron Techron) more often than every 3000 miles - only use one extra one if you have a specific problem (like engine raggedness) that you are trying to cure.

Ideally, do this additive about two tankfuls (approx 600 miles) before an oil change, so whatever may have blown into the oil is removed from the engine.

They sell it at Sunoco gas stations in Canada. I've always put it in my cars that require higher octane gasoline in the past....

I would use Redline S-1 or Gumout Regane. Redline contains 30-50% of cleaning ether while Regane contains 30-40% of cleaning ether which a OTC product.
