But here's whats up: 1990 hatch,5 speed, stock(not for long) and cruisin 126k on the body. I bought the car for $600 back...oh..about 8 months with a gimpy motor. I finished the motor off and bought another KAe so I could get from point A to point B. That motor is now on its way out, which I expected, and thats Ok. I paid 300 for the motor so total I have 900 in the car as it sits. I am in progress on the body work right now and have some Silver paint waiting in a box...in my room. But yes heres what I got so far..enjoy !
The ride when I brought it home: (more damage than you can see. Appearantly the last owner thought hitting a pole on the passenger side front fender was a good custom idea. I personally dont like his taste in uniqueness)
A few hours in.. (at this point in time I realized...somebody made off with the front of my car so Im dusting for prints !
.. just kidding)
Nude Picture..
Car taped up and in the process of primering (if my car was a butt pirate...get it..no? ok)
Left side(after some Dr.90210 stuff I have fixed dents..got rid of rust and reshaped her thighs)
ATTENTION! Some pictures in the following segments are graphic and shouldn't be viewed by those who are squimish. Proceed at your own risk.
The Crime pt.1 (what can I say.. her butt isnt the best round town but its not always about looks...right?...RIGHT!?)
The Cime pt.2 (...)
The Supect
The Sentance ( may you rot in hell )
Ok so thats all I got to today, but keep close and there will certainly be much more !!
To do list:
Finish body work
Primer
Paint
Motor swap

I may fix it .. or try. Its bad obviously..but im the kind of person who likes to take things that are deemed irrepairable and ..well repair them. If i go that route I am going to use a combo of metal...and fiberglass... and bondo.
Step one Cut the holes to take away the bent and damaged metal and to make a nice flat surface for the fiberglass on the inside of the hatch. and bondo on top... and hope to little baby Jesus that I shape the hatch right when I bondo it..and maybe a wing. Not sure.. but I like wingless...but thats beside the point.
Stay tuned boys.

Id like to think my hatch was worst case scenario (I could be wrong) but it was bad..ya dig? the point of this and me not buying a new one is to show it can be done with just a few things/time. Its not for every one but it will keep your car "original" so to speak. I am by no means a body work guru nor do I claim to be with that in mind, here we go!
I made a point to use tools common to most every one. No welders or air tools here. So even you,yes you, can do it too
Step 1
[Weapon ("The Tooth")
Cut out weak metal like so
Step 2
Weapon ("Patches")
Make a nice place for the Bondo to rest its sleepy head
Like So..
And So..
Weapon ("Cover Girl")
Cover over the holes and fiberglass with a nice layer
Like So..
And So
Dont forget to sand that now
Another coat and sand again kiddies
Dont forget her curves she is a valupcious lady after all. Work it down til its just right and matches her body
After all that work put on her temporary make up so she can look presentable when showing her off
And there you have it fixed hatch boys
Ok I just used basic 80-120 grit and an orbital sander. Theres a trick to using an orbital on body work...so dont just hack away...go with the curves keeping it moving along the shape of the body.
It only took me like 3 hours total work time with some diddling between...so not too bad.
And Yes I know its not perfect I ran out of light and I promised an update so I went ahead and got that far and put the pics up. Thats only the first coat of primer, which we all know is the "revealing" coat and shows all the things you forgot to do. So when I get it all worked out Ill put more pics up tomorrow.
Stay tuned.

This would be nice (Altima Wheels) But whats the offset and for that matter what year are they off of? Theyre on ebay but no info about them except theyre 5x114.3 and 17x7 i think is what it was.

cant wait til your cars all nice and rb'd, and mines all nice and kat'd and noice. we can go roll up 240-steez and be all super cool and stuff.

The body line is filled and smooth a lot better than it looks in the pic..
Remember The non existant rocker ??
I even had to shape the inside of it that wasnt there, and how the outside flowed with the body..
This is the color that went on the car that I didnt care for.. it looks better in the pics than what it does in person.
NOW FOR SOME GOODIES
This is my next project:1978 Trans Am 400 auto. If any of you all saw my introduction thread then you saw the other my dad has (this one is mine)
You can see door damage(I have a new door) and rust.. mostly on the surface
The motor is in need of a lot of love.. it will BARELY move on its own power.
So instead this is the motor thats going in it (the motor out of dads car). Dont worry it isnt the original motor in his car either.. that original one is sitting in the garage and is getting rebuilt to keep that car numbers matching.. which is something Im not too concerned with that. The motor Im getting (currently in dads car) is out of a 69 Gto with 6x heads that had the bottom end rebuilt and an Edlebrock Torquer intake. Before I put it in Im going to cam it and do a few little things to it to give it some more pep.
And here is the SSEI running on 12lbs of boost about 260 whp that my mom wrecked. It still runs awesome.. just ... as you can see it bent the control arms destroyed the doors, and buckled the piller between the front and rear doors on this side. could be fixed but instead Im selling it.
Any Buyers? $500
So there you go .. theres some pics for you to chew on for now until I get can some white paint and fix the compressor. Enjoy!

Butt even the rear bumper kinda has that aero-ish look to it without the side effects.
I woulda put that other piece on that goes under the tail lights... but i lost the bolts apperantly, along with the bolts for the lights up front..
But here she sits ready to be masked off and painted soon !

useful thread
thank you.
and yes this thread is going to keep going. I still have the car. I am going to be fixing frame rust holes here soon.
The plans were to have it painted in which it would have been, but i decided to hold off because of a few things:
I am going to pull the motor clean it all up paint the engine bay and get it ready for the RB swap.
Im going to sand blast the car instead of just primering over the paint thats already there and this means the shaved body line is going to come back (which doesnt bother me) I have grown to not like it as much as I had originally so although it was a complete waste of time to get it all done, Im glad I didnt and found that I didnt like it than not have done it and wished I had.
My uncle has a sandblaster so as soon as I can get the abrasive and get the blaster over here I will be starting on that.
So even though this hasnt seen much action lately Im getting my stuff together dont you worry !
EDIT: I may go out and strip the interior and clean it all up to get it ready to make over the interior (paint) headliner seats reupholstered, ect.

Some hyper-genius did similar work to my 1964 Catalina before I bought it. It was an area a bit larger than your spoiler rust holes. It did so much damage that you could fit your fist into the rust hole the patch helped to create.
In the future, POR15 will be your friend, especially with those Ponchos.

So I bought some fabric at Joann Fabrics. My goal is to keep a "stock" look but with some updated fabrics and touches to bring the car into a post y2k era. Ive only done the glove box so far but stay tuned for more ! please...
P.s. I DIDNT remove the old fabric first as I didnt want to replace the foam and I wanted to keep the stock contour that it makes. So I used the fabric and the foam underneith as my "new" backing.
Here is how it started out

This is the fabric I bought. Its polyester.

And here is the done deal.

What I used:
- LOCTITE brand spray adhesive.
-fabric (4 yards) I only needed like half a yard for the glove box
-staples
Cost:
$25
Get your hands dirty !

a little tip put the fabric down first ( no glue) and run the roller around it then use those creases as a mark to cut. cut it a little outside it and then spray glue down while MAKING SURE its smooth. I have a few creases in the fabric which make me mad, but oh well.

Ok, so here is what you do:
1. Google search POR15. Hot rod guys use it, it saps moisture out of metal, means "Paint Over Rust."
2. Poncho is another word for Pontiac which is what you have a few of.

Poncho is NOT a Hispanic term for Pontiacs, I take offense. Do you think "Tin Indian" is a Native American term for Pontiacs too? I'm not trying to "one up" you at all, just trying to make a comment. I apologize for not kissing your *** like everyone else does here. Tossing ideas back and forth makes for good tech and proper tech. You take the constructive criticism along with the compliments but you learn from both. See what I'm getting at? I guess I'm just old-school or something, jaded from the many years I spent wrenching on old iron and writing about them along the way. P.S. I do like the door panel welting stuff. Good quality idea for those of us with separating door panels. The tool tip was trick too, never would have thought that would have worked.
I wasnt being a jerk and I dont demand people to kiss my ***, really. I dont expect it or anything. I can take criticism well, and use it when I learn something I hadnt known before.
I WAS NOT making an offensive remark and I made sure I worded it to where everybody would know I was not meaning it offensively.
I have heard the "Indian" term thrown around due to their once symbol being an indian. Which is where today they have the arrow head. But Like i said in my recolection I HAD NEVER HEARD THEM BEING CALLED PONCHOS, thats not to say they arent I was just stating that if I had heard that its not common enough for me to remember such a thing.
I did not mean for it to sound like I was being an ***, ha. I try to keep things light hearted, but thats pretty hard to do in type. Sorry if you took offense ( as I am man enough to apologize in those JUST IN CASE moments )
But I do not expect people to kiss my *** like I said, but every body giving respect should get respect thats all I feel. (not saying anyone is disrespecting me)
Maybe I read the whole thing wrong, but if it was constructive criticism, thank you for that. I do enjoy having ideas bounced around, and fully expect it.
Back to the car now, there will be updates today!

This is what I was working with

Im going to do something with the dome light, not sure what though.

Here it is outside the car. Waiting for its big moment.

Visors. I may end up swapping some from another vehicle if I can find some I just cant live without...

The weapons.

These arent that glossy, the flash again being an over achiever.

and again

Headliner back in with visors.

Annnnd a wider shot.

Material used:
-Vinyl and Fabric Paint
-Plastic Paint
Cost:
$ 10 approx.
Welp. Thats all for this update. Im off to find my next project !

good call on checking the craft store though.
im considering finding a way to remove the dome light in my coupe, since ive got the map lights in the front where my sunroof controls are. but then id have to recover it with the same fabric, and make it look nice.
i dont see the point in two separate interior lights on the ceiling.
nice work though, im still wanting help with the paint and stuff on the roof of my car.

Ha yeah. Good call on that. It didnt look like the right size, but turns out it was near perfect.
In your case I would do away with the dome light, maybe. I plan on getting a different looking kind maybe? or figure out a way to update it somehow.
I could help you recover your headliner if you buy the fabric. We can just tack in something over the hole before we cover it.

Twice the price of normal spray paint but everything I've read people rave about it so I'll see how good it actually is. I tried the krylon fusion in my spec v its a decent match but still has a little sheen to it so I'll see how this works and take a side by side comparison pic.

Post Title: Cleaned up.
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 12:28 PM 9/24/2008
This how it started. As you can see the passenger side is already clean.

Another shot of the mess.

After removing the seat I scrubbed away.

And here it is after some reassembly.

I used to work at a car lot where I was the salesmen, and detailed. Im pretty good at it. I didnt bother cleaning real well as I know its just going to get dirty again here soon.

2001 Ls1 less than 30k on the clock.

Corvette oil pan.

Box of goodies: Valve covers, pistons, oil return, ect.

So thats the plan now. This is going to be an Ls1 car. And tackling it on a budget, impossible? Not if you got the motor for what I got it for
Plans now find out how to put this thing in, do they make a conversion kit for the Ls into an s13?
The motor is going to get a nice cam and thata probably it. 6-speed and a tune should net me close to 400. and still get good gas mileage (in the way of a v8)
any advice on the matter is welcome !

Yes the LS1 gets pretty good gas mileage for a V8 you can get up to 30mpg highway probably 20mpg around town.
Oh I got the SEM satin black today, wow I'm impressed its a very very close match to OEM trim it was well worth the $10/can
Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (DriftBoy07)
Posted by: tramp_drift240 at 6:37 PM 9/25/2008
and the ls1 would probably be better, since its got way more torque on tap.
but neat plan, man, whatre you gonna do for mounting the tranny and motor? dont bite off more than you can chew, or you wont be done with your puny ls1 swap til im already finished with my ridiculous ka-t.

V8? good gas mileage? hahahahahahahaha lol jk man. i love the LS1 though for real, good choice-thas what my dad wants me to get but im stickin with the quick spoolin SR for drift
Yeah itll get over 25 miles to the gallon. Better than a bulid SR making the same power.

Nice choice if you got it at a good price, LS engines are getting cheap I'm tempted to ditch the VQ idea and go LS who knows at this point though. I think there is a kit out there for LSx swaps but its not cheap might be better off making your own if you can weld. Also I could be wrong but I think you want the GTO oil pan. Did you get heads with that too? Yes the LS1 gets pretty good gas mileage for a V8 you can get up to 30mpg highway probably 20mpg around town. Oh I got the SEM satin black today, wow I'm impressed its a very very close match to OEM trim it was well worth the $10/can
Yeah, I got it for $100 bucks
and Ive heard you want the gto oil pan, but when they swap into like S10s they need the corvette? I dont know whats the difference I know the corvette one is thinner.
And yes I dont want a kit I just need like mounts. It didnt come with heads I had heads a while back with intake for this motor, but I sold them I can get both of those for under $250 though. I also need coil packs and ecu headers and all the front stuff. All in all Ill be around the same price to do the rb swap but making over 100 horses more than the stock rb.
Oh almost forgot the transmission. I need to do some research as to what T5 will bolt up to it, so I can save a few pennies over the T56 tranny.
And Tramp- I probably did bite off more than I can chew. I like challenges and well this is one for sure. The hardest part is getting the thing in there. If its more than I feel like putting in it, Ill sell it.
I am also going to see a man about a horse.... Not really, but Im going to see if someone can reflash the ecu to bypass all the unnecessary sensors and stuff.

me silly-i meant the turbo spoolin, and i wanted to try something new with a turbo since i have a pontiac V6 and my dad had the LS1 in his camarohttp://www.daftinnovations.com/s13ls1/index.html
Hinson does too but its very expensive. I'd save up a few more pennies and get the T56 its a lot stronger than the T5.

To be completely honest I have never been a fan of the LS swap, because I like nissans motors. Dont get me wrong this is an excelent motor, but for my daily car.. I dont know. I may do the RB and get another car (swap the RB into it when Im good and ready) and then drop the LS in my current car for a toy.
all that could change by tomorrow though, depending on how I feel.

amazing price for all that, did you get a trans with it as well? as far as mounting the trans, my brother got a custom crossmember from a guy that makes them. i'll get you his info, but im not sure what all applications he makes the conversion crossmember for. check out the build thread for my bros camaro for some info on american muscle and whatnot
you def are making the right choice going ls though, especially for that price. driftboy- tramp already pointed it out, but the turbo determines spool time and any NA engine is better for drifting, auto x and cornering in general since there's no lag. and the ls can get impressive gas mileage especially with the t56 and its 2 overdrive gears

The 240 will not be getting the Ls it will instead be going RB like originally planned. I AM however getting a miata
and you can pretty much guess the rest.

I was also going to go with the T5 tranny, but I keep reading it wont hold up to the torque of an ls1, and mine will be getting a cam. So t56 it is. I also didnt think Id be needing that extra gear, cuz in like a T/a you cruis at around 2k doing 80.

in my brother's setup he paid like $750 for a zoom clutch and clutmasters flywheel and like $100ish on a custom made crossmember to bolt the t56 up to the camaro

"The chassis and drivetrain pair together as if it were meant to be from the factory. The Miata throttle cable falls into place in the LS1 throttle body and the T56 shifter pops in the center of the factory shifter location. The converted car makes for a balanced (able to obtain 50/50 with suspension tweaking), lightweight (neighborhood of 2400lbs.), and extremely sporty car (300rwhp,300rwtq). Plus, no one expects it!" -Racing Concepts
I think I read somewhere on there with no suspension mods is when it was 53/47

and the miata's motor has got to weigh less than a ka. im not positive, but im fairly sure they arent primarily composed of heavy ass iron.
should i get the spray that sprays on clear, and turns into black primer? or just the rust tough stuff that supposedly stops it.

Like So..
Another coat and sand again kiddies
It only took me like 3 hours total work time with some diddling between...so not too bad. <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://images.nicoclub.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif" BORDER="0"> And Yes I know its not perfect I ran out of light and I promised an update so I went ahead and got that far and put the pics up. Thats only the first coat of primer, which we all know is the "revealing" coat and shows all the things you forgot to do. So when I get it all worked out Ill put more pics up tomorrow. Stay tuned. |
way i was taught by my autobody teacher was make the hole square use a airtool(i dun remember the name of it) to make a small bend on the edge of the hole make a patch out of sheet metal 16 guage to 20 guage will work thn weld using a alternating bead pattern till the patch is fully welded grind down then primer and paint..........for those of you who are say welders are expensive i bought a mig for 90 bucks from a swapmeet and i have a tig that i bought for 150

And The car has been sold for almost a year now... I was certain I put that in this thread. Getting married and so on leaves little room for toys that need so much work. I haven't even been on this site for.. a few months. I will be back though : ) and with a new project now that things are getting settled down.
IF you read the thread you will understand that I by no means claim this to be the best method. Hell to be honest I just did it to see if I could do it and make it look right, make it function, and to see if i was up to that kind of extensive work. Oh and btw the hatch is still holding up..per new owners words
