Post Title: Captain's Build Thread (56k? how cute)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 1:44 PM 4/6/2008

Heyo. Its been a while since I have had any sort of activity on the forum...and I'm sorry. I have had a lot of things I needed to get done between the band, school, and moving to Charleston,WV I just haven't found time.Oh yeah.... call of duty 4 on xbox live poses a threat to my much needed car time...but what can I say I enjoys killin' me some n0obZ <-ha.

But here's whats up: 1990 hatch,5 speed, stock(not for long) and cruisin 126k on the body. I bought the car for $600 back...oh..about 8 months with a gimpy motor. I finished the motor off and bought another KAe so I could get from point A to point B. That motor is now on its way out, which I expected, and thats Ok. I paid 300 for the motor so total I have 900 in the car as it sits. I am in progress on the body work right now and have some Silver paint waiting in a box...in my room. But yes heres what I got so far..enjoy !

The ride when I brought it home: (more damage than you can see. Appearantly the last owner thought hitting a pole on the passenger side front fender was a good custom idea. I personally dont like his taste in uniqueness)

A few hours in.. (at this point in time I realized...somebody made off with the front of my car so Im dusting for prints ! .. just kidding)

Nude Picture..

Car taped up and in the process of primering (if my car was a butt pirate...get it..no? ok)

Left side(after some Dr.90210 stuff I have fixed dents..got rid of rust and reshaped her thighs)

ATTENTION! Some pictures in the following segments are graphic and shouldn't be viewed by those who are squimish. Proceed at your own risk.

The Crime pt.1 (what can I say.. her butt isnt the best round town but its not always about looks...right?...RIGHT!?)

The Cime pt.2 (...)

The Supect

The Sentance ( may you rot in hell )

Ok so thats all I got to today, but keep close and there will certainly be much more !!

To do list:

Finish body work
Primer
Paint
Motor swap

Lookin' good, maybe get a wangan wing to cover up those holes?

Looks good so far. Be sure to provide how you fix the rust wholes in the hatch, and on the spot in front of the rear bumber behind the tire. I have rust on the same spots on mine and im trying to learn how to fix them.

im in Kanawha County, right near south charleston.

I can't wait til it stops raining and gets a little warmer. I can't start working on mine. Looks good so far. More pics cuz your captions are great.

Post Title: Re: (J240sx)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 4:44 PM 4/6/2008

my plans forthe hatch are.. ether option A which is best: buy a new one..or B:for the sake of everyone who likes DIYs and solutions..fix it.

I may fix it .. or try. Its bad obviously..but im the kind of person who likes to take things that are deemed irrepairable and ..well repair them. If i go that route I am going to use a combo of metal...and fiberglass... and bondo.
Step one Cut the holes to take away the bent and damaged metal and to make a nice flat surface for the fiberglass on the inside of the hatch. and bondo on top... and hope to little baby Jesus that I shape the hatch right when I bondo it..and maybe a wing. Not sure.. but I like wingless...but thats beside the point.

Stay tuned boys.

Ill be working on it today ; )

Post Title: Re: (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 8:43 AM 4/7/2008

i have a question: does anyone know where I can get that metal "bracket" like thing that the lip bolts into. All my bolts broke off in it.. they were in bad shape.. and the only way the lip is going back on is if i have that... suggestions...or its official name?

Post Title: Re: (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: niemczykj at 8:51 AM 4/7/2008

u could try and fab one? and for that hatch dude, it would be way easier to just find a good hatch to buy and put on there with no holes... u could get one oh for say 70$ maybe 100 max..

Post Title: Re: (niemczykj)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 10:20 AM 4/7/2008

Oh i know it would be easier. But.. this is for everyone who cant come across a good deal on hatches.. or dont have the money to get one.. but have the time to fix theirs. Ive already started on the repairs..updates...tonight.

Post Title: Re: Captain's Build Thread (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 9:11 PM 4/7/2008

Ok gents I said thered be an update so here it is, better late then never... Tell your girlfriend that eh... get it

Id like to think my hatch was worst case scenario (I could be wrong) but it was bad..ya dig? the point of this and me not buying a new one is to show it can be done with just a few things/time. Its not for every one but it will keep your car "original" so to speak. I am by no means a body work guru nor do I claim to be with that in mind, here we go!

I made a point to use tools common to most every one. No welders or air tools here. So even you,yes you, can do it too

Step 1

[Weapon ("The Tooth")

Cut out weak metal like so

Step 2

Weapon ("Patches")

Make a nice place for the Bondo to rest its sleepy head

Like So..

And So..

Weapon ("Cover Girl")

Cover over the holes and fiberglass with a nice layer

Like So..

And So

Dont forget to sand that now

Another coat and sand again kiddies

Dont forget her curves she is a valupcious lady after all. Work it down til its just right and matches her body

After all that work put on her temporary make up so she can look presentable when showing her off

And there you have it fixed hatch boys

Ok I just used basic 80-120 grit and an orbital sander. Theres a trick to using an orbital on body work...so dont just hack away...go with the curves keeping it moving along the shape of the body.

It only took me like 3 hours total work time with some diddling between...so not too bad.

And Yes I know its not perfect I ran out of light and I promised an update so I went ahead and got that far and put the pics up. Thats only the first coat of primer, which we all know is the "revealing" coat and shows all the things you forgot to do. So when I get it all worked out Ill put more pics up tomorrow.

Stay tuned.

ll be working on this today as well.. getting it finished and more pics. be ready !

Post Title: Re: Captain's Build Thread (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: White Comet at 11:20 AM 4/8/2008

looking pretty good, i like the process. my only thing is that i would have welded (at least tacked) some sheet metal in before the fiberglass and bondo

Post Title: Re: Captain's Build Thread (White Comet)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 11:43 AM 4/8/2008

yeah I could have. But I wanted to keep it simple. I may replace it in the future...who knows. Or wing it...that I dont know either. But I wanted to make it to where people who dont have the access to welders can do it too ( I myself do ) but I was making a point so no one should have an unfixed hatch no matter the circumstance. But yeah its not perfect...but Itll be close enough. Its sealed nicely and no leaks so thats good for me.

Post Title: Re: Captain's Build Thread (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: White Comet at 12:07 PM 4/8/2008

ahh good point, i just like to be extra cautious

Post Title: Update
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 2:06 PM 4/8/2008

So after some going over again, resanding, and reprimering this is the final product. Enjoy
Oh and dont you worry about that 3rd light its coming out soon. And the tail lights are gonna be replaced soon as well, but those are further down the to do list

Post Title: Re: Update (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: darens13 at 5:21 PM 4/8/2008

damn those foam wings! im waiting for the weather go get a little nicer than i will perform my foam-wing-ectomy. nice body work btw

Post Title: Re: Update (darens13)

ha yeah no kidding.. the worst idea by nissan i can think of. The weather is gonna get crappy again round here so my progress is gonna take a hit, but Ill get my supplies and a game plan in order and get some stuff knocked out. Ill be in NY on friday and saturday as well so that puts a hindrence on the work. But next up is lower quarter repair and rocker repair then PRIMER the whooole thing.

Oh yeah and thanks man hah

Post Title: UPDATE
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 1:57 PM 4/17/2008

Well its been a little while yet again fighting off bad weather to get some work done on the t'fourty.I have made a little progress, not as much as I would like, but some nonetheless. So here is what were working with now.
Enjoy

So I decided to take the 3rd brake light out.. Wish I woulda thought of that before I went and finished the hatch (^see above) But my studid a$$ gets bright ideas a little late.

Fiberglass work here done messed up my hard work from before..

Myspace angle

Later that day I made the oh so neat decision to also go Wiperless...

Hole

After some fiberglass and bondo we have..

First primer coat to see what I f'ed up.. seems to be alrighty

After the day and a few cuss words later here she is . Not perfect, but dangit I am sure proud to be done with it...at least for now.

Glamour Shot

And here are a few teasers of whats to come.

Fender Work, and rework, and so on..

This ones for White Comet. You Cutie

So there we have it another 2 days of work. I may have some more done tonight depends on how frisky Im feelin' . Happy Motoring

Post Title: Re: UPDATE (urcaptnspeaking)

this should be ready for paint in another 2 weeks or so. HOPEFULLY!! so stay tuned

Post Title:

You certainly have more body work balls than I.

My hatch had the exact same problem as yours, and I didn't even think about fixing it. Yours didn't turn out half bad

Post Title: Re: (LowTekk)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 5:00 PM 4/17/2008

ha thanks. Yeah I mean down the road I may get fenders and a hatch. But for now its no show car like ive said a million times. I just want it to look Good.

Post Title: Re: (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: white90esex at 5:31 PM 4/17/2008

i think with the money you spent on the fiberglass resin/matte and all the filler you probably coulda bought a rustless holeless hatch.

OH well, gives you somethin to do right.

Post Title: Re: (white90esex)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 6:40 PM 4/17/2008

wrong. I had the filler to do the rest of the body work. hence Im painting it, and the only thing I had to buy was the fiberglass $13 at Walmart and my wonderful time. Now you cant beat that.

Looks good so far I'm curious how well that fiberglass patch will hold up though

Post Title: Re: Update (White Comet)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 8:45 AM 4/18/2008

No, and I remember reading your thread saying it will look plain without any, BUT heres the focus on this car: I want to do things to it as if it were a car of the 21st century styling wise. I am bringing it up to today's styling cutting back on some of that early 90's feel Ex: the bottom line, 3rd brake light in that weird position , Im trying to think of what I could do with the lights to make it look "stock" but updated if you know what I mean. and the same for the wheels... I may go with some newer nissan wheels or something that make it look "stockish", but newer. I also thought of the chrome 5 stars off the later 240s..would look nice and stock. But the headlights are the only things Im trying to work an idea on.
Interior I have some swell ideas too

Maybe down the road doing a moon roof as well

so that leads me here: any ideas for the wheels or headlights (remember I dont want people to go oh thats custom RIGHT off the bat. I want to say It looks like it could have came that way!)

This would be nice (Altima Wheels) But whats the offset and for that matter what year are they off of? Theyre on ebay but no info about them except theyre 5x114.3 and 17x7 i think is what it was.

Post Title: Re: Update (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: White Comet at 8:58 AM 4/18/2008

sounds good, im curious how it will turn out. for the moonroof, some SE s13s had a power moon roof. so if you get one of those it shouldnt be too hard to make it work

I know 40 is a bit sunk am I correct. Im horrible at the offset game. 35 good?

look at the 17s on my car in my build thread, those are like +35-40. flush is like +10-15

Post Title:
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 9:27 PM 5/7/2008

So I know its been a bit of time since the last update: Bad weather and Grand theft auto keepin me up at night.. Oddly enough his name is Niko(in the game) eh.. eh.. ahhhhh you get it.
Im almost ready for paint, silver, I want to go back white... but I have the silver sitting here hanging out in the bedroom so Its something I dont have to buy and if it really gets to me down the road... Ill just repaint it, since Im doing it myself. Anyways, heres whats been done.. enjoy doods.

This is the rear quarter (in front of the drivers rear tire)..before the surgery.

This is when I got the fiberglass work done and some rough sanding..I hate sanding fiberglass...

DONE ! ..I had to make the whole corner out of fiberglass and bondo... not bad for a not-so pro at this eh..I was impressed

Behind the wheel This is after the fiberglass work, but you get it and can see the hole in pictures above if you must

This is it done Again Not too shabby huh?

Tribute to W.C as you can see the body line.. wait ... No you cant
ahhhh exactly.

The other side looks the same as well

Booty shot like an 18 year old ( no wrinkles )

Fenders Shaved and hanging out.

Fluid jet be gone Nice and smooth.

New project Interior. Making it nice and up to date. This is after i pulled the fabric off... got some work to do... stay tuned for that

Here she sits.. waiting for her big paint day (soon stay close)

Thats all for that..I hope you boys are enjoying this as much as I am.. and I wish you could share some of the cuss words as I go along, but Ill settle for nice comments.

oh, What the hell is this.. I found this as I was putting some fluids in her..

You can see where it goes into the harness right under my thumb.

Have no idea... and everything was hooked up when we put this motor in..... so Im kinda wondering here. help?

are you puttin those patches on the outside or inside the hatch?

Post Title: Re: (tuned4trash666)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 10:09 PM 5/10/2008

if you can put them on the inside. where the wiper was.. its on the inside.. but the others i couldnt really get to them so theyre on the outside...in which i ran into some troubles getting it nice and smooth without taking too much of the fiberglass off... but i managed to do it.. carefully without weakening it. But if you can do it from the inside.. do it.

plus, you could check out my wrecked coupe and all my parts, and depending on when, you could check out the next coupe im gonna be putting all my stuff on.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! you should help me on some body stuff ^__^

Post Title: Re: Captain's Build Thread (tramp_drift240)

hey man. Not in charleston just yet BUT i have to move there in like 2 weeks cuz my girlfriend just got a job at wells fargo. heres where im at on my car: I started to pain it my compressor messed up and now wont hold air well.. (dont know) and it wont restart the pump when its getting low so it messed up while painting and I had to sand what I did off. But thats ok cuz I didnt like the color that was going on (Silver)

I will definately help you will body work though. When I get down there Ill let you know whats up.

if you are still wonder where that wire goes, then look under your throttle body and you will see this plug for it, so let me know if i am wrong

Post Title: Re: Captain's Build Thread (sloweighty)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 4:09 PM 6/5/2008

i mean its not that it REALLY matters as that motor is coming out as soon as I get my RB20... yes RB20 hah... No hatin'. I dont want to build it too much I just want to push around 225-250 rear wheel horse...cuz I have a trans am Im starting on after this. And that motor will be pushing around 325 rear wheel horse and over 400 lbs of torque (the motor stock is 220 horse and 320 lbs of torque)

Post Title: Re: Captain's Build Thread (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: tramp_drift240 at 4:22 PM 6/5/2008

trans am? i approve as long as you dont sell the 240 or something, because that'd be very lame.

yeah man, lemmie know whats up when you get into charleston.

HOPEFULLY, within the next few weeks i should be rebuilding my motor (again) and swapping it into a new body, swapping over all my aftermarket suspension, all of my interior, etc.

cant wait til your cars all nice and rb'd, and mines all nice and kat'd and noice. we can go roll up 240-steez and be all super cool and stuff.

Remember The non existant rocker ??

I even had to shape the inside of it that wasnt there, and how the outside flowed with the body..

This is the color that went on the car that I didnt care for.. it looks better in the pics than what it does in person.

NOW FOR SOME GOODIES

This is my next project:1978 Trans Am 400 auto. If any of you all saw my introduction thread then you saw the other my dad has (this one is mine)

You can see door damage(I have a new door) and rust.. mostly on the surface

The motor is in need of a lot of love.. it will BARELY move on its own power.

So instead this is the motor thats going in it (the motor out of dads car). Dont worry it isnt the original motor in his car either.. that original one is sitting in the garage and is getting rebuilt to keep that car numbers matching.. which is something Im not too concerned with that. The motor Im getting (currently in dads car) is out of a 69 Gto with 6x heads that had the bottom end rebuilt and an Edlebrock Torquer intake. Before I put it in Im going to cam it and do a few little things to it to give it some more pep.

And here is the SSEI running on 12lbs of boost about 260 whp that my mom wrecked. It still runs awesome.. just ... as you can see it bent the control arms destroyed the doors, and buckled the piller between the front and rear doors on this side. could be fixed but instead Im selling it.
Any Buyers? $500

So there you go .. theres some pics for you to chew on for now until I get can some white paint and fix the compressor. Enjoy!

my dad had a 78 trans am with a 400 in it, his was in like mint condition, I have a 1968 GTO right now with a 400, 2 4 barrel carbs, ram air 3, bored out, racing cam, etc. my dad did a whole lot of stuff to the engine throughout the 90s

Nissan and Pontiac FTW

Oh yeah man. But if its a Ram Air 3 and you replaced the cam... its no longer a Ram Air 3 ... right? I thought that was just the cam. If im wrong please tell me.. i know trans am's like the back of my hand, not Gto's though. All I know Is the ram air 3 and 4 are pretty powerful motors out of the box

Post Title: Re: Captain's Build Thread (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: soulflyfn69 at 9:39 PM 6/5/2008

The engine is a 6.6L 400cid frankensteiner out of his old grand am it has the ram air 3 hood and headers. The engine is bored .30 over. He bought the car wrecked with no engine or tranny for 150 bucks, his friend tied it with a chain to the back of his 69 camaro and towed it while my dad steered. Lol He bought it when he was 18 he's 46 now. About two years ago he gave it to me. He dropped a whole lot of money into it though. The trans am they sold, it was a shame that car was sweet.

here's some pics of the GTO

it needs a cleaning it's been sitting around for awhile

yeah I have the same motor. Not ram air 3 but the 6.6 400 in both cars. The one Im putting in is just going to get a decent sized cam and maybe a few other things. My buddy can get all the surfaces decked and planed for like 100 bucks. so i may do that.

you planning on spraying it in the garage or taking to a shop?

Post Title: Re: (Uberck)

haha yeah i figure. I know for a fact one fender is going to be a ***** to get lined up.. it was bent when i bought it and I didnt feel like sending it back since i got it real cheap anyways.

Im going to spray it either here under a make shift booth, or at my buddies house who has an incredible garage.

good deal, always nice to have a nice closed space to paint instead of guess spraying outside
regarding the fender, trick is to have plenty of water and do it out of the sun or else you will loose your sanity trying to bend that ****er and get it into place and want to run it off a cliff, good luck

So I feel like i just kinda left this whole thing. I was going to sell my car...well I still am but Im going to keep on going with it until it sells. And yeah the price will go up accordingly. But I am finishing the body work/ primer. There were some spots I didnt care for really, So I am revisiting them. After this is done (which should only be a few days) Im going to talk to my neighbor about spraying it for me (my compressor wont handle it). Its going to be silver for now cuz I have the paint just hanging out. I will get pics here soon ; )

so we should be painting it this week ! Ill snap some pictures Of the body work Im doing and when i get it primed. Then some pics of it painted hopefully !

Also, I will be fixing the rust on the frame after paint.

Then its interior time.

Stay close

Post Title: UPDATE
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 1:13 PM 8/12/2008

So the past 2 days Ive been gettin some things rolling on this again.
I finished up the body work for paint, cleaned it up, and got the bumpers remounted.

Im not going to be rocking aero (WC) but I do enjoy how the front bumper almost looks body kit-ish

Side boob

Butt even the rear bumper kinda has that aero-ish look to it without the side effects.

I woulda put that other piece on that goes under the tail lights... but i lost the bolts apperantly, along with the bolts for the lights up front..

But here she sits ready to be masked off and painted soon !

Keep in touch !

Ok so I keep debating on what is best to do: sell this or keep it. I do need the money right now, but i do want the car. Heres my train of thought: If I sell the car its no big deal, because when I can get another one Ill get me a real clean shell for around a grand and swap in a motor of my choice. And right now I am just not seeing this thing getting done on my dime..

So $700 as it sits.

useful thread

thank you.

and yes this thread is going to keep going. I still have the car. I am going to be fixing frame rust holes here soon.
The plans were to have it painted in which it would have been, but i decided to hold off because of a few things:
I am going to pull the motor clean it all up paint the engine bay and get it ready for the RB swap.
Im going to sand blast the car instead of just primering over the paint thats already there and this means the shaved body line is going to come back (which doesnt bother me) I have grown to not like it as much as I had originally so although it was a complete waste of time to get it all done, Im glad I didnt and found that I didnt like it than not have done it and wished I had.

My uncle has a sandblaster so as soon as I can get the abrasive and get the blaster over here I will be starting on that.

So even though this hasnt seen much action lately Im getting my stuff together dont you worry !

EDIT: I may go out and strip the interior and clean it all up to get it ready to make over the interior (paint) headliner seats reupholstered, ect.

Post Title: UPDATE

I posted this all in another thread, but I want to keep my stuff compiled so its going in here as well.

Decided to do some sleepy eyes after finishing up some more body work.

and here are some other pics of me doing a check on body work with a contrasting color.

^^those arent waves they are crappy spraypaint lines+dust

I will be doing a few things here and there to add while I wait to save some money to get some big things done and out of the way !

I Will be making the nose "grills" functional as well so stay tuned for that.

Hopefully you don't keep this car for long. Your fiberglass patches are going to exacerbate the rust issue and make for some even more interesting rust holes in the future once moisture comes back.

Some hyper-genius did similar work to my 1964 Catalina before I bought it. It was an area a bit larger than your spoiler rust holes. It did so much damage that you could fit your fist into the rust hole the patch helped to create.

In the future, POR15 will be your friend, especially with those Ponchos.

I only understood half of that. But this is temporary anyways. So Im not too worried about it.

Post Title: INTERIOR UPDATE
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 4:20 PM 9/20/2008

So today I made a thread about reupholstering. I then decided I was going to do it myself as I hate for other people to do work for me. Not in a selfish way I just love to learn things.

So I bought some fabric at Joann Fabrics. My goal is to keep a "stock" look but with some updated fabrics and touches to bring the car into a post y2k era. Ive only done the glove box so far but stay tuned for more ! please...

P.s. I DIDNT remove the old fabric first as I didnt want to replace the foam and I wanted to keep the stock contour that it makes. So I used the fabric and the foam underneith as my "new" backing.

Here is how it started out

This is the fabric I bought. Its polyester.

And here is the done deal.

What I used:
- LOCTITE brand spray adhesive.
-fabric (4 yards) I only needed like half a yard for the glove box
-staples

Cost:
$25

Get your hands dirty !

Post Title: INTERIOR UPDATE 2
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 8:54 PM 9/20/2008

So I got home and decided to do a door panel before i went to bed. Its not "done" but its close. I need to find piping to go around the egde or come up with something to clean it up a little (it is clean just not clean enough for me) The white you see on the speaker grill is that powder stuff you put on carpets when vacuuming haha.... I just havent dusted it off yet. Oh and there is some glue smears that you can see which I will be taking care of. Other than that Im pretty happy with this one (for my first time) the second one will obviously be better. Anyways here are some pics!

This is the tool I used: a screen door roller.

Door panel II will be posted tomorrow ! Good night.

a little tip put the fabric down first ( no glue) and run the roller around it then use those creases as a mark to cut. cut it a little outside it and then spray glue down while MAKING SURE its smooth. I have a few creases in the fabric which make me mad, but oh well.

Ok so I finished door panel number 2. I also found some "piping" used for bracelets at my local craft store to put around the edge to clean it up. The door panels werent in the best shape to begin with: rips, scratches, ect. So this is just to make them better than before. When I get my other 240 Ill be extra careful in my projects . Ok here are the pics !

This is
The piping I got from a craft store.

This is The spray adhesive used.

Door panel 2
under going surgery.

Door panel 2 where it was ripped and torn all the way down the door. This is after I had glued it back down.

Door panel 1

Close up of the piping.

Total cost $10

Material used:
-piping $5
-Super glue $5

Hope you enjoyed. Now I have to find a few more projects I can get into.

Stay tuned !!

Ok, so here is what you do:

1. Google search POR15. Hot rod guys use it, it saps moisture out of metal, means "Paint Over Rust."
2. Poncho is another word for Pontiac which is what you have a few of.

I used a type of rust eliminator brother. And I have never heard pontiac called poncho. Maybe to like a Catalina which is often a "low rider" candidate. The I could see it called Poncho due to the Hispanics and their presense in the low riding community. But the pontiacs I own are referred to as Flaming Chickens, Bandits, Birds, TA's ect..

I like the go fast kind not the drag my bumper kind.

Poncho is NOT a Hispanic term for Pontiacs, I take offense. Do you think "Tin Indian" is a Native American term for Pontiacs too? I'm not trying to "one up" you at all, just trying to make a comment. I apologize for not kissing your *** like everyone else does here. Tossing ideas back and forth makes for good tech and proper tech. You take the constructive criticism along with the compliments but you learn from both. See what I'm getting at?

I guess I'm just old-school or something, jaded from the many years I spent wrenching on old iron and writing about them along the way.

P.S. I do like the door panel welting stuff. Good quality idea for those of us with separating door panels. The tool tip was trick too, never would have thought that would have worked.

Pontiac in the beginning did have the slang term "indian"

and

They are known as Poncho's; I have no idea why, but hey... it was a good theory lol

Good job on the build dude, keep it up!

I wasnt being a jerk and I dont demand people to kiss my ***, really. I dont expect it or anything. I can take criticism well, and use it when I learn something I hadnt known before.

I WAS NOT making an offensive remark and I made sure I worded it to where everybody would know I was not meaning it offensively.

I have heard the "Indian" term thrown around due to their once symbol being an indian. Which is where today they have the arrow head. But Like i said in my recolection I HAD NEVER HEARD THEM BEING CALLED PONCHOS, thats not to say they arent I was just stating that if I had heard that its not common enough for me to remember such a thing.

I did not mean for it to sound like I was being an ***, ha. I try to keep things light hearted, but thats pretty hard to do in type. Sorry if you took offense ( as I am man enough to apologize in those JUST IN CASE moments )

But I do not expect people to kiss my *** like I said, but every body giving respect should get respect thats all I feel. (not saying anyone is disrespecting me)

Maybe I read the whole thing wrong, but if it was constructive criticism, thank you for that. I do enjoy having ideas bounced around, and fully expect it.

Back to the car now, there will be updates today!

Post Title: Update again
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 6:33 PM 9/22/2008

Today I didnt do a whole lot. I took out my head liner and visors and sprayed them black. It matches better than the pics show, but that flash really makes this stuff look way different. Enough chatter heres the pics !

This is what I was working with

Im going to do something with the dome light, not sure what though.

Here it is outside the car. Waiting for its big moment.

Visors. I may end up swapping some from another vehicle if I can find some I just cant live without...

The weapons.

These arent that glossy, the flash again being an over achiever.

and again

Headliner back in with visors.

Annnnd a wider shot.

Material used:
-Vinyl and Fabric Paint
-Plastic Paint

Cost:
$ 10 approx.

Welp. Thats all for this update. Im off to find my next project !

sweet pete, hope you change your mind on selling it. I've regretted it every time I got rid of my 240(I have had four).

NIGGA I TOLD YOU IT WAS BRACELET STUFF.

good call on checking the craft store though.

im considering finding a way to remove the dome light in my coupe, since ive got the map lights in the front where my sunroof controls are. but then id have to recover it with the same fabric, and make it look nice.

i dont see the point in two separate interior lights on the ceiling.

nice work though, im still wanting help with the paint and stuff on the roof of my car.

I tried out that krylon fusion its not that glossy in person but I wasnt a fan of it either doesn't really match the oem black trim perfectly and I'm anal about that lol gonna try out SEM trim paint. Funny you posted this I was working on my headliner tonight too

Yeah I see that. I would like to get something more oem "black" which is more like a charcoal then black. Tell me how that trim paint stuff works out.

Its not going anywhere. No worries, I get in my moods (not frustrated with the car) but I quickly retreat the idea.

Ha yeah. Good call on that. It didnt look like the right size, but turns out it was near perfect.
In your case I would do away with the dome light, maybe. I plan on getting a different looking kind maybe? or figure out a way to update it somehow.
I could help you recover your headliner if you buy the fabric. We can just tack in something over the hole before we cover it.

No worries Friday I will be down there, and Im staying in crosslanes till saturday night or sunday morning so like you can give me your number and I can swing by or we could just do it another time. Let me know.

Haha 2 people now working on the same thing at the same time. Weird. What color did you go with ? Mine isnt all that dark in the pics, but in person it looks nice. Its a good shade.

SEM Paints (SEM15243) Color Coat - Satin Black
Part#: SEM15243
Manufacturer Part#: annv-pb
(Qty: 2 x $11.13)
Discounted Item. You Paid: $10.02

Twice the price of normal spray paint but everything I've read people rave about it so I'll see how good it actually is. I tried the krylon fusion in my spec v its a decent match but still has a little sheen to it so I'll see how this works and take a side by side comparison pic.

Today I was in the mood to just do some cleaning up. The interior was nice in my car, but it had been getting all scuzy. Which lead me to bringing it back to life.

This how it started.
As you can see the passenger side is already clean.

Another shot of the mess.

After removing the seat I scrubbed away.

And here it is after some reassembly.

I used to work at a car lot where I was the salesmen, and detailed. Im pretty good at it. I didnt bother cleaning real well as I know its just going to get dirty again here soon.

Post Title: Important Update !
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 5:29 PM 9/25/2008

I changed my mind today. I had planned this whole time to get an RB20 and make about 400 horse. I still want to go RB in my next project but since this car is going to see a few tracks and some abuse I figured I should do something with more ready available parts. So here are the pics to do the rest of the talking !

2001 Ls1 less than 30k on the clock.

Corvette oil pan.

Box of goodies: Valve covers, pistons, oil return, ect.

So thats the plan now. This is going to be an Ls1 car. And tackling it on a budget, impossible? Not if you got the motor for what I got it for

Plans now find out how to put this thing in, do they make a conversion kit for the Ls into an s13?

The motor is going to get a nice cam and thata probably it. 6-speed and a tune should net me close to 400. and still get good gas mileage (in the way of a v8)

any advice on the matter is welcome !

V8? good gas mileage?
hahahahahahahaha
lol jk man. i love the LS1 though for real, good choice-thas what my dad wants me to get but im stickin with the quick spoolin SR for drift

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: gregfarz78 at 6:35 PM 9/25/2008

Nice choice if you got it at a good price, LS engines are getting cheap I'm tempted to ditch the VQ idea and go LS who knows at this point though. I think there is a kit out there for LSx swaps but its not cheap might be better off making your own if you can weld. Also I could be wrong but I think you want the GTO oil pan. Did you get heads with that too?

Yes the LS1 gets pretty good gas mileage for a V8 you can get up to 30mpg highway probably 20mpg around town.

Oh I got the SEM satin black today, wow I'm impressed its a very very close match to OEM trim it was well worth the $10/can

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (DriftBoy07)
Posted by: tramp_drift240 at 6:37 PM 9/25/2008

quick spooling has nothing to do with the motor, just the turbo.

and the ls1 would probably be better, since its got way more torque on tap.

but neat plan, man, whatre you gonna do for mounting the tranny and motor? dont bite off more than you can chew, or you wont be done with your puny ls1 swap til im already finished with my ridiculous ka-t.

Yeah itll get over 25 miles to the gallon. Better than a bulid SR making the same power.

Yeah, I got it for $100 bucks and Ive heard you want the gto oil pan, but when they swap into like S10s they need the corvette? I dont know whats the difference I know the corvette one is thinner.
And yes I dont want a kit I just need like mounts. It didnt come with heads I had heads a while back with intake for this motor, but I sold them I can get both of those for under $250 though. I also need coil packs and ecu headers and all the front stuff. All in all Ill be around the same price to do the rb swap but making over 100 horses more than the stock rb.
Oh almost forgot the transmission. I need to do some research as to what T5 will bolt up to it, so I can save a few pennies over the T56 tranny.

And Tramp- I probably did bite off more than I can chew. I like challenges and well this is one for sure. The hardest part is getting the thing in there. If its more than I feel like putting in it, Ill sell it.

I am also going to see a man about a horse.... Not really, but Im going to see if someone can reflash the ecu to bypass all the unnecessary sensors and stuff.

well me silly-i meant the turbo spoolin, and i wanted to try something new with a turbo since i have a pontiac V6 and my dad had the LS1 in his camaro
thas the car i learned how to drive stick on, and the first car i learned how to get sideways
have fun with it dude, im definately gonna be keepin an eye on your thread to see how ya do it because i think its a really good combo
good luck man

Damn thats cheap I'm jealous I'd ditch the VQ in a second if I came across one that cheap so I don't blame you for ditching the RB. These guys sell a mount kit

http://www.daftinnovations.com/s13ls1/index.html

Hinson does too but its very expensive. I'd save up a few more pennies and get the T56 its a lot stronger than the T5.

Sick dude. Thanks for that. I may still go RB I dont know.. haha Im scatter brained. I may still go RB and accumulate parts for this. I keep forgetting that I need to have the car running and on the road by spring or so.

To be completely honest I have never been a fan of the LS swap, because I like nissans motors. Dont get me wrong this is an excelent motor, but for my daily car.. I dont know. I may do the RB and get another car (swap the RB into it when Im good and ready) and then drop the LS in my current car for a toy.

all that could change by tomorrow though, depending on how I feel.

amazing price for all that, did you get a trans with it as well? as far as mounting the trans, my brother got a custom crossmember from a guy that makes them. i'll get you his info, but im not sure what all applications he makes the conversion crossmember for. check out the build thread for my bros camaro for some info on american muscle and whatnot you def are making the right choice going ls though, especially for that price.

driftboy- tramp already pointed it out, but the turbo determines spool time and any NA engine is better for drifting, auto x and cornering in general since there's no lag. and the ls can get impressive gas mileage especially with the t56 and its 2 overdrive gears

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (tramp_drift240)

T56 is a manual transmission.
I think WC was talking about it's 5th and 6th gears, which are considered as overdrive gears.

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (tramp_drift240)
Posted by: Razi at 10:49 PM 9/25/2008

Overdrive gears are gears that allow you to cruise at low rpms and help improve your gas mileage.

So 5th/6th gear = overdrive

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (tramp_drift240)
Posted by: White Comet at 10:49 PM 9/25/2008

the same way that 5th on a 5 speed is considered an overdrive gear

lol thanks for the education guys
im still goin SR20 though
captn you should still go LS1, the american muscle meets import is a cool combo and not a TON of people do it!
but either way, im watchin for updates

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (DriftBoy07)

Thanks dudes for all the support. I did not get the trans with it, but it will be t56 when I do get one. Itll need a good 2k still to get this in the car and driveable. But probably a bit more reliable than the Rb. So when I figure my stuff out I will definately let you all in on the info.

WC-thanks man Ill be waiting to hear back.

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 8:36 PM 9/27/2008

As I have been discussing with tramp. I think I may just keep the LS for my fun/beat around 240 when I get it, and RB my current one. Dont know. Things could change depending on deals I guess..

Oh and Post 900!

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 3:51 PM 10/5/2008

Change in plans. Like I said would happen.

The 240 will not be getting the Ls it will instead be going RB like originally planned. I AM however getting a miata and you can pretty much guess the rest.

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (urcaptnspeaking)

score, monster miata

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (White Comet)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 5:09 PM 10/5/2008

oh you know it. The kit is pricey but comes with everything and takes away a lot of headaches is $3500 for the new K member, frame supports, manifolds, differential, drive shaft and Im not sure what else.

I was also going to go with the T5 tranny, but I keep reading it wont hold up to the torque of an ls1, and mine will be getting a cam. So t56 it is. I also didnt think Id be needing that extra gear, cuz in like a T/a you cruis at around 2k doing 80.

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (tramp_drift240)
Posted by: White Comet at 8:46 AM 10/6/2008

yeah the t5 is weak. its not worth it unless you already have a t5 and plan on using it to drive gently until you get a t56

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (White Comet)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 4:41 PM 10/6/2008

Well I mean. Its like 1200 or so for a t56 might as well just go for it and not waste time and money.

Tramp: yeah the spray stuff is fine.

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: White Comet at 5:55 PM 10/6/2008

true, but before you get into it, it'll be like 1200 for the trans maybe but theres also the cost of clutch and flywheel, appropriate bellhousing (if it doesnt come with it) starter, and some kind of crossmember for mounting.

in my brother's setup he paid like $750 for a zoom clutch and clutmasters flywheel and like $100ish on a custom made crossmember to bolt the t56 up to the camaro

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (White Comet)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 6:53 PM 10/6/2008

The kit comes with the cross member, and I will get a tranny out of a Trans am or Camaro with the bellhousing so that wont be an issue. The kit makes it to where literally its just a matter of squeezing it in there and bolting it in. Very thorough. Race concepts is who makes the kit.

Check it out:

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: White Comet at 4:16 AM 10/7/2008

wow, that is thorough. i didnt see the clutch and flywheel mentioned but from the description it sounds like it would be included. thats pricey though, my brother def spent less on his but then again he has more room to work with and he went chevy to chevy not into a mazda. this'll be 1 hell of a beast, but from what ive heard you can forget cornering with an ls up front

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (White Comet)
Posted by: urcaptnspeaking at 9:26 AM 10/7/2008

I havent thought about clutch and flywheel much as I wont be putting much more than stock power down. Just cammed. The clutch should hold that, But I will look into them. Also Ive read on 3 different cars that It maintains its 50/50 weight distribution. THe motor assembled is less than a KA which probly is around the same as the Miatas motor. Ive read one site that said it was 53/47. either way they all said it was virtually unnoticeable.

"The chassis and drivetrain pair together as if it were meant to be from the factory. The Miata throttle cable falls into place in the LS1 throttle body and the T56 shifter pops in the center of the factory shifter location. The converted car makes for a balanced (able to obtain 50/50 with suspension tweaking), lightweight (neighborhood of 2400lbs.), and extremely sporty car (300rwhp,300rwtq). Plus, no one expects it!" -Racing Concepts

I think I read somewhere on there with no suspension mods is when it was 53/47

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (urcaptnspeaking)
Posted by: White Comet at 11:10 AM 10/7/2008

thats not bad if thats true but i find it hard to believe without proof that a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder, 1.6 liter 4 cylinder and 5.7 liter 8 cylinder are all the about the same weight. the ls is obviously a light motor for what it is, but nowhere near as light as the other 2 engines mentioned

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (White Comet)
Posted by: tramp_drift240 at 4:41 PM 10/7/2008

for realz.

and the miata's motor has got to weigh less than a ka. im not positive, but im fairly sure they arent primarily composed of heavy ass iron.

should i get the spray that sprays on clear, and turns into black primer? or just the rust tough stuff that supposedly stops it.

Post Title: Re: Important Update ! (tramp_drift240)

after doing some research a fully dressed LS1 with t56 weighs around 575lbs. The motor itself is around 450 lbs

So even you,yes you, can do it too <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://images.nicoclub.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif" BORDER="0">

<IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://images.nicoclub.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif" BORDER="0">

Stay tuned.

*shudders at the hackjob* wow effective but damn ....I would have cut square holes around not those big ovals as for the bonda and foberglass fill patchjob its gonna hold moisture and the edges of the metal around the patch are gonna rust....how quickly depends on your climate just a lil heads up ...but good job anyways

way i was taught by my autobody teacher was make the hole square use a airtool(i dun remember the name of it) to make a small bend on the edge of the hole make a patch out of sheet metal 16 guage to 20 guage will work thn weld using a alternating bead pattern till the patch is fully welded grind down then primer and paint..........for those of you who are say welders are expensive i bought a mig for 90 bucks from a swapmeet and i have a tig that i bought for 150

<IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://images.nicoclub.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif" BORDER="0">

Stay tuned.

one word man OUCH lol not the way i would have done it but least u got the job done

eh sorry lol kinda new to this forum dun know how to quote only one thing here but yeah most of the bodywork he did i would have done a more permanant fix of using sheeetmetal and a tig welder which i have on hand (bought tig welder for 90 bucks at a swap meet its worth every penny

it only cost me at the time like 20 bucks . So by all means I would have bought it if you would have sold it to me shipped for that.

And The car has been sold for almost a year now... I was certain I put that in this thread. Getting married and so on leaves little room for toys that need so much work. I haven't even been on this site for.. a few months. I will be back though : ) and with a new project now that things are getting settled down.

IF you read the thread you will understand that I by no means claim this to be the best method. Hell to be honest I just did it to see if I could do it and make it look right, make it function, and to see if i was up to that kind of extensive work. Oh and btw the hatch is still holding up..per new owners words
