Post Title: S13 Front Strut / Firewall Brace
Posted by: rotorimp at 12:38 PM 8/7/2007

Finally ready!

These front strut / firewall braces were designed and engineered specifically for the purpose of increasing the rigidity of the cowl and front suspension areas on the S13.

Developed for the 240sx Convertible, they are equally effective at reducing front end flexion on the Coupe and Hatch, while allowing full access to the top of your engine. Valve cover removal can be done without removing the FSTB.

In addition, they are situated to transfer and distribute strut tower loads evenly across the firewall and bulkhead, increasing suspension flatness.

Manufactured from thick-walled mild steel tubing, with CNC-cut mounting plates and gusseted welds and joints, you won't find a beefier strut brace on the market. PERIOD.

Finish is a high-quality satin black powdercoat that's been professionally applied to resist chipping, scratching and flaking.

Note: Drilling of the firewall (two holes) is required. Installation is fairly simple and should take less than an hour with normal hand tools.

SAY NO TO CRAPPY EBAY STRUT BRACES!!!!

Is it necessary to reinforce the firewall at the mounting points?

Post Title:
Posted by: AZhitman at 1:07 PM 8/7/2007

No. The steel is fairly thick there, and the forces are distributed with the direction of the firewall metal.

Freaking SCORE! That looks awesome Jason. This just went to the top of my list for stuff for my 'vert. I'll put one on my hatch too as soon as I get the wiring sorted out.

You have to drill two holes in the firewall to install this right? I'll have to find a means of doing that before I even think about ordering...

so uh what engine is going in that 240

i see some heavy mount pod modification on the crossmember

Well Jason, you truly are a master fabricator, finally a strut brace that is better then the others and will fit around my RB before I get a front facing IM! Great Work!

Would you have to remove the dash to drill your holes and not hit stuff? I like it btw and will have to get after I finish the brake upgrade.

Hey man, I want one. How much shipped to Toronto Canada?

And I am also concerned about drilling the firewall. Do the brake and clutch line need to be relocated? And does it come with the hardware to mount the bar to the firewall?

Very nice, I will be ordering one of these soon. I've got an RB and it looks like it should clear.

It's unny though. I was just talking to the guys in our abrication shop, like a week ago, about making one very similar to this. Guess there is no need to use up my favors when I can just buy one. Thanks.

Just out of curiousity, how thick is "thick walled mild steel tubing" ?

Post Title:

in a few weeks, i shall be ordering one myself. thanks jason!

Hello all,

Drilling the two holes in the fire wall is very easy--you do have to remove the plastic just above it to get to the back side. They can be installed in about 20 min. just because you have to put it on-mark the holes and drill them. Nothing else has to be removed or changed. We did notice with some aftermarket suspension. that you have to lower one of the struts to get it on--just because they are made to very tight tolerances and I didn't want to mess up any threads on the struts. these bars also come very close to the hood. If your all stock you will be fine but some of the carbon fiber hoods come down closer and you might have to put some washers on the hinge. The wall thickness on the tubes is .095" and currently it is up to the buyer for the hardware to attach it to the firewall. Any other questions please post them.

Nice work Jason. I saw it when you posted up on welding web. On there you mention that there is no interfearance with top mount turbos, is that still the case?

Post Title: Re: (Jonnie Fraz)
Posted by: rotorimp at 7:28 AM 8/11/2007

YES Sir--That was the main reason for builbing them. Seems like there are endless strut bars that go across the motor but none that are able to clear the big turbo's, LS1's ect...

How much do they weigh compared to the competition?

Post Title:
Posted by: AZhitman at 12:20 AM 8/14/2007

They're significantly heavier than those sissy ebay bars, I'm guessing 5-6 lbs..

FWIW, I can flex a Cusco bar with my hands, and I'm not a real strong guy.

This thing is beefy.

Post Title:

will it clear s13 sr20det with 3 nismo mounts?

my cusco barely clears

this is definitely a fine piece of work. i gotta get me one.

Post Title: Re: (jdm_master_X)
Posted by: rotorimp at 7:15 AM 8/14/2007

We made them VERY strong--they actually weigh 10lbs. You can NOT twist them by hand. If you look at the pictures they run very close to the fire wall as not to get in the way of any engine combo.

Post Title: Re: (rotorimp)
Posted by: homeslicej2 at 7:21 AM 8/14/2007

Do you plan on making more of these (and possibly one for the rear?). I want one, but I have other things to do first.

Post Title:

Why doesn't it use all 3 bolts on the strut tower?

Post Title: Re: (rotorimp)
Posted by: datsun2401972 at 9:32 PM 8/14/2007

Hopefully you'll have 1 left after the 15(payday).

And please do make a matching rear STB

Looks like the holes would be difficult to drill with the engine in?

Because it's rigid, making it near impossible to install without dropping your struts... Don't want people to damage the threads on the strut studs!

that makes sense, I was wondering the same thing

Post Title: Re: (Loveless)

There was no real advantage to the third bolt. The two bolts properly torqued down are sufficient--plus it gives our bar a unique look.

And Yes as long as there is a demand we will produce them. In fact Dan has me convinced to do a s14 run.

Datsun2401972--Your bar is in the mail.

We might be able to do a one off--would you want it weld in or bolt in?

Post Title: Re: (rotorimp)
Posted by: datsun2401972 at 9:59 PM 8/16/2007

hmm, bolt on for the strut mounts.

If there was gonna be some kind of crossbrace to the strut tower sidewall or the bottom of the trunk you could simply put a flange with no holes and I could weld it or drill it if I wanted.

But really, I don't wanna trouble you too much for the "one off" thing....you just need to mass produce a rear bar too lol!

Damn... i just bought dc sports front and rear strut bars They are actually IN THE MAIL... lol.

How do these compare to dc sports strut bars front and rear? Having two more points i guess would be better but hey.. ah well sigh... Apparently the dc sports ones are 7lbs each if anyone cares to know...

Recieved my bar today!!!

Looks awesome, thanks for a great buy!

Let me know about the heat sheild and MC brace(will it work for those with the z32 brake master cylinder?).

Keep me informed about a rear bar too please!!!

lol, I spent $250 on a welding machine so I could do this for myself..but at this price for the quality I might as well buy it already done.

@RotorPimp / Jason,

Will this fit an S13 Coupe + R33 Xmember + NISMO mounts + RB25?

Yeah, Odd question :-\ I'm currently using the stock IM so clearances are tight I plan on getting a different IM "soon" but that is still a ways off :-\ I am already planning on shimming my hood for clearance, so that should not be an issue. Currently using the stock hood sans skeleton.

I *think* the Cusco STB will fit -- a friend has it and I can test, if that helps. I have been looking for a better solution for a while. Thanks!

*edit*
Also, how much for a MC heat shield?

Post Title:
Posted by: unwed_transient at 10:13 PM 8/21/2007

since you don't need to go behind the firewall/in front of the dash, i'm assuming you use screws to secure it to the firewall? or can you place nuts there with access from the vents?

also, is there adequate clearance should i need to fiddle with/replace the bmc or cmc? i can't tell very well from the pics.

i will defintely put an order in if i like the answers i get.

thanks.

Post Title: Re: (unwed_transient)
Posted by: rotorimp at 7:15 AM 8/22/2007

We designed this to be very user friendly and is no way permanent.

L0nestar--I have a rb25 (I made my own mounts) and i can put the motor in with the bar still installed!!! the bar runs as close to the firewall with out getting into the brake lines as possible. you should have no problem with the R33 cross-member

unwed_transient--I use grade 8 nuts and bolts combo very easily accessed after you take up the plastic shield. If I was going to remove the master cylinder/brake booster from the car I would take off the bar first. You can get to all of the fluids with the bar attached.

Got my bar in today. Love the beefiness of this thing.

I'm running into a problem where the bar is hitting the top of my ABS actuator thing, specifically the frontward bleeder screw. I'm thinking i'm going to have to modify the actuator bracket to drop it about 1.5 or so. Jason if you have any tips i'm all ears.
If i work out something with my bracket i'll give you guys directions on what i did.

Jason... hope you don't mind if i just post the pictures up here.

From the front.

It's just hitting the top of the bleeder valve here.

here you can see how close it is to the top of the actuator

and here's a slightly wider shot of the same area

I don't really want to ditch the ABS but i might.

I was looking at it some more last night.. the way the actuator bracket is i think i should be able to mod it like this.

apologies for the crappy MS paint picture.

So jason give me a couple days and i'll get back to you.

omg so lucky... I wana cut my sunroof and weld in 22 gauge sheel metal haha (22 gauge is what the car's metalwork is i think anyways).

I have no ABS, no AC, no cruise control (cause i removed it) and no hicas (cause i removed it), i want to remove heater system, sunroof, antenna, and i dont know what else is there haha... i have pw windows :-/

Post Title: Re: (a_ahmed)
Posted by: homeslicej2 at 8:41 AM 8/24/2007

Yeah, I kinda lucked out with the lack of options. I like the bare bones cars. Last two vehicles I owned how the window regulators go out and windows didn't work. I have no hicas or cruise either. I do have rust through in the spare tire well though bc previous owner left the jack to slide around in there and the lights were leaking idiot. It's right by one of the gas tank mounting holes too!

krazydriver: GL with trying to drop the ABS actuator. Don't mess it up though. If you can do it take lots of pics to show everyone how it went

Post Title: Re: (homeslicej2)
Posted by: krazydriver at 7:51 PM 8/24/2007

alright i had about an hour to work on this today so here's what i've gotten so far.

Unbolt the wiper motor and remove the nuts holding the abs actuator to the bracket. Obviously unbolt the bracket/relay bracket/wire connections. Holding the wiper motor out of the way you can fairly easily pull the abs actuator up and get this.

Next part was a little harder take some time and work the abs bracket around. You have to unbolt the lower bracket holding the fuel lines and the bracket holding the fuel filter. That way you can get the lower end of the bracket up and over the fuel lines. Once that was done i was trying to get it to slide down between the strut/bucket area and the engine but it just wouldn't fit. So i took the dremel and a cut-off wheel and took off the top tabs on the right side of the bracket as seen here.

^^ i have nasty hairy arms!!

Then i just pushed the abs actuator back down and saw where everything laid out and now it fits like this.

for some reason my weekends are usually busier then the week. So if i manage to get measurements it will probably be monday night before i'll have time to reweld the abs bracket so it holds the actuator properly.

Post Title: Re: (Loveless)
Posted by: krazydriver at 7:04 PM 8/26/2007

^^ loveless are abs S13's really that rare??

bracket has been cut and rewelded and everything bolted in.
Tomorrow i gotta slot the brackets a little to allow some adjustment so they bolt in and out easier.

I gotta sleep now but i should have the rest of the pics on how i modded the bracket up by tomorrow night.

Post Title: Re: (krazydriver)
Posted by: Fenvy at 12:29 AM 8/27/2007

Post Title: Re: (Loveless)
Posted by: rotorimp at 7:21 AM 8/27/2007

krazydriver--Did your car come with a VLSD? The only ABS car I have ever seen also had LImited slip (It was a AZ car).

Post Title: Re: (rotorimp)
Posted by: krazydriver at 8:37 AM 8/27/2007

No it doesn't. I jacked the back end up spun the tire and they went opposite directions. that and my burnouts are one wheel wonders

alright here's the end of the relocations.

i know my welds look like absolute crap, but they're strong. Plus the abs actuator isn't really going to be exerting that much force to move around.
So to sum it up my chopped bracket moves the ABS actuator down about 2 inches and about 1.5 inches towards the drive side. Strut bar mounts fine and while it's close to the abs... there's no chance of it hitting.

No love for New England.. I'm stuck at Hanscom AFB just outside Boston. This is the worst place in the world to be. (this opinion coming from a FL boy)

Any other questions please post them.

you can also use jacknuts if you don't feel like removing the plastic cover.

Posted by: hai1206vn at 3:57 PM 10/13/2007

Nice, I want one. I personally like the bar to have 3 mounting holes at each end instead of 2 cuz I just feel the load over the struts will be more even.

The strut bar's color right now is totally fine. I don't really like any bling under the hood anyway.

Would you consider making rear strut bar, c-pillar bar, trunk bar, etc. in the future? A lot of bars in the market are not solid welded like yours.

Keep up the good work.

I want one!!! If they are still in the making... is there any chance you can powder coat it PINK?

Would I need to put down a deposit or anything?

Post Title: Re: (vertbish)
Posted by: rotorimp at 2:51 PM 10/17/2007

Yes I can do a pink red purple any color you want!!!!!!! We will be welding up another run this weekend! We are not sure if the brake stoppers will be incorporated into the bars just because allot of people want them separately. Once we get them welded up there will be a week or two turn around to get them powder coated. For the ones that want custom colors we will want a deposit/paid in full--just because it would be harder to resell a custom color. I'll post up the link to the place that we get things powder coated and you can pick the color. I think we will also sell them un powder coated (cheaper) if people are interested.

definately want one, and the brake mc stopper too, if it's for the LHD cars! I don't care what color, I saw it fits over the RB and I've got a large top mount on it. Looks awesome, let me know how I can get one!!!

We shoud have some un powdercoated ones ready by Monday the 22 of Oct. We are going to make a couple rear bars--put them up on the site and build a few of the most popular. The powdercoated bars should be ready by 1 Nov (both custom color and standard wrinkle black).

P.S. they will fit LHD and RHD--the only fit issue has been with ABS (pump is in the way)

Post Title: Re: (rotorimp)

i have a feeling that this front bar will also clear the intake plenum for a VQ35 swap, especially the HR where 2 intake pipes run to the sides instead of 1 pipe going behind as with the DE

We got 20 bars bent this weekend (now to weld them up)

We also prototyped a heat shield that incorporates a brake booster stop (prevents master cylinder from moving around)

We also prototyped the rear bar which is a triangulated design. We are going to have a battery tray that attaches to it for people wanting to relocate the battery.

Is your paypal the same?

Thanks

Post Title: Re: (pdqwrx)
Posted by: rotorimp at 5:22 PM 10/23/2007

Yes my PayPal is the same. If you want a un powdercoated/plain bar I will do 139.00$ shipped the powdercoated bars are 149.00$ shipped. We still need to get a few more welded up before I take the lot to the powdercoater. the heat shield and rear bar are in the final stages of prototyping and I'll post up a picture for some feedback before we do a big run.

So--plain bars are availiable now
for 139.00$ shipped and the powdercoated bars should be done in a week--no longer than two weeks.

CUSTOM COLORS--We are doing custom colors but they must be paid in full. Before we take the bar in
check out the link for the colors. They will still be 149.00$ shipped

Did you mean 9 NOV?

I was interested in these, too, until I read about the ABS issue. I'm not even an apprentice fabricator, nor do I have any welding equipment. Unfortunately for me, unless somone can master fabricate a new relocation bracket, I guess I be sol.

STB looks great, though!

Out of curiosity, did you consider constructing a trapezoidal bar arrangement that also mounts to the firewall?

Post Title: Re: S13 Front Strut / Firewall Brace (axis)

Yep Nov. 9

We did think about making some that go across the engine bay --but there are soo many out there we wanted to make something unique. The ABS is a problem unless you have a welder. If I could get ahold of a couple brackets I could modify them for the ABS guys.

I've been looking at the vq35de swap in s13 http://forums.nicoclub.com/zer...ge=13and notice that there's no strut bar option for that setup since the intake is really close to the firewall. Would you think of fabricating something that might work, like going in front of the vq and maybe mounting to extra spots on the frame front for instance?

Jason,

Could you do a rear one for an S13 Hatch? I have a stereo system in the car, but don't have my sub and enclosure installed bc I have nothing sturdy to mount it to (nor do I feel like dropping the rear subframe to bolt it to the floorpan. I've thought of using a rear shock tower bar for awhile, but they've all been alum and won't cut it. Let me know if you could do one for the back. jhenry7@gmail.com I'll give you more details of what I'm shooting for via e-mail. Thanks man.

17 Nov--I have 5 bars left in this run. Looks like I'll get to mock one up on a S14 chassis soon so I can make these for later cars.

I will buy one for my S14 ASAP

Should have the prototype by Jan--I'll do a run of ten or so. I would like to get the heat shield and the rearbar out first.

Is there any new development on the rear strut! I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Since you make the big bars outof mild steel, just wondering if you would do one out of chromoly steel?

You got some great fab. skills so i am also wondering if you can fab. up an intake plenum for our car N/A and turbo?

You still have any in stock? I will buy on the 21st of December. Merry Christmas to me!
I want to get the rear bar also. If you have any ready I will pick one of them up also.

I have 4 of Front tie bars bars left. We are working on the rear bars and the heat shield ( Jan )

Post Title:
Posted by: smapdee2k at 6:16 PM 12/19/2007

I picked up one of rotorimp's braces and brake-shields for my S13. I'm running an Rb20 with the stock intake mani so there aren't many options out there for braces. I haven't bolted it up to the firewall yet but installation onto the strut towers took all of 10 minutes and the end result looks great! The heat shield was super easy too. Here are a few pics so you RB guys can see what's up.

Bump for any updates on the rear bar, and also of those 4 that you have left are any not powder coated, id like to get it coated by my guy here to match the rest of my stuff!

I'll do a run of 10--(still trying to get caught up) I can have them plain/powdercoated and with without battery box. What is the interest out there?

+1 for Powdercoated black like the front w/ battery tray (maybe that will give me the drive to finally move the battery)

Post Title:

Im very interested as well, but would like to see where the place ment would be of the battery box, even just a picture of a S13 trunk with a red X where it will be located will help tremendously

Post Title: Re: (Sky80)
Posted by: jt15833 at 11:58 PM 12/30/2007

I don't have an rb but would this be a better option than different bars? looks very sturdy plus firewall mounts.

Also, is it available for s14?

Post Title: Re: (jt15833)
Posted by: rotorimp at 6:26 AM 1/5/2008

The idea of this stut bar is for the swaps that you would otherwise not be able to run a tie bar with--like a rb25 that uses the stock plenum or a sr/Kat that uses a top mount turbo.

***the last two bars of this run went out today*****

We will be doing another run after the rear bar and heat shield run

Post Title: Re: (rotorimp)
Posted by: iitywygms at 10:15 PM 1/11/2008

Received the front bar. Nice work!
Be sure to post pics of your rear bar. Even a drawing showing what you have planned would be cool. I will probably pick one of these up also.
Will the tray be for a standard battery size?

Yes we have 15 more bars bent up that will go for S13 and S14 bars---we need to make some more feet and finish the prototype S14 bar. Look for them to be available in Feb

Yes, I'm still interested in a rear bar.

And beyond that I'm now jealous because the 1st run of fstb's didn't have the welded on supports close to the feet

Hi Rotorimp,

I purchased this bar and I love it. I have a request though. Next, can you reproduce the Do-Lucky front ladder bar shown below:

http://www.intensepower.com/frontladderbar.html

I tried to get the JGY customs copy but aparantly they don't produce it anymore and the authentic Do-Lucky is also discontinued. I know AZHitman has a front and rear set so maybe you could copy his one?

Post Title: Re: (Silvia_Drift)

thats what i was saying... we need more braces over the chassis especially underneath it'd be awesome, i was saying subarus and evos have lots of these options... why not s13 :P and im pretty sure scooby and evo chassis are more stiff than an s chassis haha

Post Title:

When ever the next run of s13 bars come outs, count me in. If you decide to do a rear bar with battery tray for the coupe, count me in on that as well. Subscribed!

Post Title: Re: (wishihadas14)

OMG, this is EXACTLY what i have been looking for. I wanted a front strut bar for a little added rigidity on my VQ swapped S13 but I had to cut and cowl the hood just to get the engine to fit......no way a bar was fitting over that. and now here you are!!!!!
do you have any made, can i order one and most importantly how much are they, cuz im running low on cash again after the VQ swap.

If you posted them up on silviav8.com you could probably sell between 10-15 easy, and on zilvia.net probably another 15-20.

How much difference is there between the S13 and S14 bars? Never looked at them up close. Just curious if it's a few minor changes or a completely different platform to build off.

I'm gonna go over to Jason's this weekend and do donuts in his front yard until he welds up some more FSTBs.

If his wife desn't kill him, the dust will.

I broke down and bought a dc sports CS-2 strut bar months ago. Version 2 build thread has pics. No firewall brace, but it's definitely a solid brace!

....I want one...

AZ should pay this guy a visit...OR AZ, being the fabricator he is, should fab it for us!

Post Title:
Posted by: FUJIBAYASHI at 9:02 PM 8/28/2009

is this part still being produced?

Post Title: Re: (FUJIBAYASHI)
Posted by: rotorimp at 4:52 PM 8/31/2009

So I have enough material for about 5 bars. Problem is time to make them. I have 3 heavy fab jobs cooking right now. When things slow down I will make some more. I'm also making a few refinments to the next batch.

Unless AZ will take me off the grindstone for a bit
