Did it help to stiffen the front end of your 'vert mestizo?

| Are the pieces just painted or are they powdercoated? S14 piece in the future? -Dan |
At the moment they are just painted, but I believe that powder coating may be offered later. That just depends on getting a good powder coating place and deal on the price. As for an S14 brace, Jon has made some prototypes but the people he has sent them to for test fitment have yet to install them. So until they install the braces we will not know for sure.

I don't have a vert, mine is a coupe. But to answer your question it stiffened the front end of my car considerably. I had to relearn my car after I put it on. Funny thing is the whole car feels more stable and even got quieter while driving or going over bumps/railroad tracks.

Oh hell, I guess it would help if I looked a little closer to your pic. With the darkness and my blindness it looked like a 'vert with the top up. I may have to order two when the ol' checking account gets reloaded.

Yes as soon as we get word that fitment is good then I am sure Jon will start selling them. Thanks for the compliment on my NSX, not many people understand what look I was going for, basically I wanted it to look like a JGTC NSX rolling on the streets.

LOL no problem, and when you get some spare cash just give Jon an email he will be more than happy to get back to you. Great thing is Jon is like most of us are, and that is hard working people who want to pay decent prices on good quality parts. Hence why these bars are priced the way they are. Not to mention they are awesome quality.

When someone takes the time to do a good job on something that's never going to be seen, and is gonna spend its life UNDER the front of a car, it tells me they've done their homework.
I think this is gonna be a nice alternative to the (overpriced) NISMO power brace.

Between Jason and Jonnie, you can really stiffen up the front of an S13!!!

That thing is STOUT, and it looks kickass.... Once you get it in there, you can see how floppy and flexible the front braces are without this piece.
Add a set of Suspension Techniques tension rod bushings (or some SPL tension rods) and you're SET!

Have you had a chance to drive on it yet Greg? I know the first time I backed out of my driveway i could feel a difference. Turn in is way better and there is a lot less chassis flex/wieght transfer now.

it's these kind of unreliable claims that makes me wary
like I said, it is better than stock and cheaper than a nismo powerbrace but you can't make these irresponsible claims

| Well I think he's just excited about the quality of it, I wouldn't be that concerned if I were you. If he has driven cars with both and this one feels firmer, then his claims are neither false nor irresponsible. |
Thank you DJ, that is what I was trying to convey.
Irresponsible ehh? LOL! You can believe or think what you want about Jon's brace, I have personal experince with it. As well as several others who also can vouch for the quality and the fact that it does exactly what it was designed for. In my "opinion" it is stiffer than a Nismo and as a matter of "fact" it is cheaper. So I am sorry but in my world stiffer and cheaper is the winner.
Post Title: Re: (Loveless)
Posted by: datsun2401972 at 9:52 PM 8/14/2007
You could do the same for the crossbar mounting plate on the inner sides of the tension rod mount. Hell you could take the bolts out after that....
Still cheaper than the nismo brace.
My only concern is the weight difference between the nismo brace and stock mounts with this brace kit installed. And is that difference worth the extra 60 to 80 bucks if the nismo brace is lighter?

| If your that concerned about "bolt on" being less rigid than the welded nismo brace, just grind off the coating along the edge of the blocks and pay a muffler shop to put a couple of 1 inch welds down either side of those blocks at the block/Tension rod mount interface. |
Exactly! Just weld it and your good. As for the weight of the bolt on version I can get some specs for you on Jon's brace as well as the Nismo since Jon has a Nismo brace.
| Quote, originally posted by Loveless » |
| Your opinions of it being stiffer has no solid evident behind it. If you at least measure the diameter between the two than you can probably begin to say something. Right now. You're conveying a biased opinion which is why I said it was an irresponsible claim. I can go on this all day but it's not fair to Johnny Fratz so I'll stop here. I won't be reading your response because I will be lured to respond. |
Ok Im not trying to argue, but you seemed to start things off on a bad note with me.
If you want to go tit for tat we can. Your claims of Jon's brace not being more solid or "stiffer" are also "irresponsible" as you put it. That is if we go by your "biased" opinion. Considering you have no factual evidence of the Nismo bar being sitffer or more rigid than Jon's.
I am glad you can go all day like this... however I cannot. I was stating my opinion, which to me is a fact. Jon does great work and his brace's are top quality. I am here to vouch for him and not argue about which one is better as it is a moot point. Whatever is best for you is what you should buy.

Even if it DID matter, which it doesn't, your paint weighs more than either one of them.
Lots of people CLAIM to care about weight reduction, but they're the same people with heavy wheels, audio components, extra wiring, electric windows (or windows at all), sunroof, full interior.
Regardless, even if it is 10 lbs heavier (which it isn't, it's actually within a pound), it's still below the centerline of the axles, which means it's fairly irrelevant.
Guys, remember to look at this for what it is: An inexpensive fix for a terribly weak part of your suspension.

Dan,
I would love to...The problem is that the S14 brace is a PITA to install. The right way to do it would be to take off the existing brackets and drill one hole in each for the bolt on.
Here is a pic of the prototype bolted into my jig.
The thing is crazy stiff, but even a little more work to install than the Nismo.

| Ok boys and girls...I have been working on this for a while, and I have had some great success with this bolt in kit. Basicly I designed this as an alternative to the Nismo Power Brace. Nismo makes a great product, but I thought there was room for improvement. With my kit it is not nessasary to to take out all front end to install the brace. It bolts in using existing holes in the brackets, this allows for quick install, and not having the need to realign your car...although it is probilly a good Idea. The kit includes a cross brace, anti crush spacers, sandwich plates, all grade 8 hardware, and a vial of red loctite to keep it all together. Here is a pic of the parts and the tools required to install. ![]() I sell the whole kit for $90.00 plus shipping Being that I am one guy fabbing these please contact me for availbility. I take Paypal for payment. Installed pics

Thanks Jonnie for a great product.
Installation note: when the front wheels are off the ground, the front sway bar moves forward and might interfere with the tension arm brace (like 1-2mm of clearance). Jacking the wheels up a bit might help. Best way is to drive the car up a pit, or use those autozone plastic ramps, so all suspension components stay where they should.

Jon wants that S14 brace to be as easy to install as the S13 brace. So that is one of the reasons it has not been made into a production peice. However in my opinion it is ready for the public now. But that's how Jon is with his parts if they don't meet all of his personal criteria I.E. function, form, quality, price and ease of install then he isn't satisified. I think that with some convincing from me and others on here we can get them into production. |
I can respect that. Maybe we could convince him to do a pre production run of the S14 parts, that way a few of us wrench monkeys can install it and do a private review, maybe an extra set of eyes and fingers will help make the final product better. Kind of like a Beta version for computer software. These are just my thoughts, in the end it is up to Jon. Im just trying to be crafty so I can get my hands on one before anyone else.

I love that brace! I have no Idea how they do it for under $400.00 though.
I do have a rear strut tower bar that has just been released.

These will sell for $70.00-$75.00 I am thinking.
Let me know what you guys think.

Seems like fair price. Is it painted or powdercoated? You might look into either purchasing, or working out something locally for powdercoating. Personally I would be more apt to pay more for a powdercoated piece.

| I've been following this thread since the beginning and I am very excited about the S-14 brace. Do you have to remove subframe to install? I love my 240 but its a bit of a flexy flyer. Oh, and the price will be right I'm sure. Keep me informed @ johnnyblack5@yahoo.com |
On the S14 brace you do not have to remove the subframe to install. I do recomend that you remove the tension arm brackets to do it. It is possable to do it with them in the car, but an incredible PITA to do it.
Price on the S14 unit will be around $100.00 plus shipping. I am contacting some of the members who were key in pushing me to get these done. Ian check your e-mail.
The rear strut bar is for an S13. I am in early production process for these.
Thanks for the interest

The only stupid question is the one not asked. The answer is no it will not interfere, because if I am right I see the bolts to one of my braces in the pics.

If someday you decide to weld a rear strut bar for s14, I know a lot of people looking for one that is sturdy. There are a lot of ebay style rear bars that go over the rear speaker deck, but they seem really wimpy and don't add any rigidity.

Ive spent a lot of time around caged race cars and the like. I can easily say, that as far as chassis bracing goes, besides a full roll cage, this is one of the best bang for the buck pieces I have ever installed. The level of finite control is increased without drastically effecting road noise or ride quality.
Im mean this in a totally heterosexual way, Jonnie, where have you been all my life?
I took over one hundred pictures and Ive gotten started on a my install write up. Its going to be very technical, I plan on hitting as many details as possible. You guys can watch for it in a few days, I will post up a link in here.
Oh wth, here are a few more teaser pix.
The blue paint serves two purposes, it looks bitchin, and it also helps it stand out, making the pictures more helpful for instructional purposes.

Ide like to hear a big Nico hoo-rah for Jonnie, without him, none of this would have come to fruition.

plus
tools,
I just put the car up. I was gonna remove the two piece, but too many bolts to remove and plus I have to take off the sway bar. So I decided to work under the car since there is some room. Measured where to drill and cross fingers.
Tighten bolts
Finished installed

| I love this thing, i've been in business since 4/29 and love it. At first I was unsure what I thought about it, I adjusted tire pressures and made a few driving adjustments and I love it. I stronly believe that one should compliment this brace with some aftermarket sway bars to fully benefit from this brace but it's awesome. Steering input is more direct, more precise, but my realization is amplified from the SPL Parts steering rack bushings I installed at the same time, however you can still feel a difference not had by the bushings themselves. It wants to push (understeer) more after initial turn in/ mid corner on tighter/fast corners but I attribute that to my stock sways. All in all this brace is great the benefits are great, especially when you figure price vs. performance. I highly reccomend this prouduct! Two thumbs up and a big thanks to Johnnie for making these!!! |
Danno,
Wow! Thanks a bunch for the complements. Also thanks for pushing me to build these.
I am so glad that they help so much. I tottaly agree that aftermarket sways will be an added plus. Also you installed new TC rods yes? Aftermarket TC rods or at least new bushings when you do this will a major plus.
Thanks
Jonnie

ahh okay. Too bad because I have heard a lot of people doing something similar to this with the power brace. Unfortunately my stock braces are garage now as the previous owner decided to drill some extra holes in the brace and moving the mount point for the tension arms? Anyway I need to just get a whole new brace...so i got a good deal on a used power brace.
If you decide to make one for the power brace in the future let me know :D
looks like a solid product! gl

I'm looking forward to seeing how much of a difference this will make on top of the other braces. I'll let you know when I've had a chance to install and test. Dano and lumberjack- What kind of paint did you guys use on your braces? |
I just used krylon. Paint isn't all that important, most rattle can paints are generally the same, its the prep work that makes all the difference. I thought about clear coating mine, but I decided not to. The paint has held up remarkably well, the only spots missing paint are where Ive scuffed over rocks and stumps while getting a little to friendly with the ditch.

Did you ever install yours? was your aftermarket sway bar a problem? I know you said it shouldn't be a problem, but I've learned not to assume anything.
Post Title: Re: S13 bolt in tension arm brace (Jonnie Fraz)
Posted by: xxmexx at 5:50 PM 7/9/2009
My install took all the material mentioned plus a rubber malet and a C clamp to get it done. time from lifting the car to backing it out was about 45 minutes. The brace is a tight fit and when the the front of the car was in the air i had zero room next to the sway bar. once the car was back on the ground i have about a 3 inch space between the brace and the sway bar. I don't think an aftermarket sway bar will be an issue sor the S13 brace.
I installed it on my daily s13 which is stock except for drop springs. I didnt have a chace to drive it much today because it was raining pretty bad. I am not sure if I noticed better handling or if i was just willing to drive more spirited because it was there. I will give a good go at it tomorrow (weather permiting) and give an update on that aspect.
If I had to do it again I would. The price was right for my budget and to me it is a nice alternative to the Nismo Brace or any other aftermarket tension rod brace for that matter.
