Post Title: Project Jspec603: 56k non compliant
Posted by: jspec603 at 4:23 PM 3/15/2007

How's it going all! I've finally decided to start my project. I'm starting off with a 92 vert that I picked up for $2900. Funny lil thing about the guy who I bought it from, told me the thing was mint...no problems...him and his wife take it out ever Sunday for a drive and the reason they were selling it was to make room in the garage for her new seabring vert...eww. Well, 2 weeks later and only the second time driving it, it blew the head
gasket! So it then sat in my yard all summer and winter. It's now been about 8 months and time to revive it! It was super nice out the other day so it encouraged me to start my project. I have a ton of parts that I've collected over the last few years and I'm gonna put them to good use. I had a fully built piggy before which had some frame rot and would no longer pass inspection. So I have taken that car apart and will put the pieces to good use. Here are some pics of the vert in the first few stages. This will end up being a slow build, so stay posted! Sorry some of the pics are crappy, my garage is dark so I tried to lighten the pics with PS.

After a little work taking things apart...

Looks good. Hope the fixes go well. What kind of mods are you planning on?

And put up some interior shots sometime

Well....Since you asked! All kinds of mods! hahaha To start, I already own; Version Select III kit with front 20mm and rear 50mm fenders, Tein Super Drifts, Blitz FMIC, Blitz DP, Turbo Fab top mount mani, Greddy oil cooler and relocater, SR20DET (which is going to be getting fully built), RHD conversion parts, S13 dual halogans, amber/clear bumper lights, and a bunch of other stuff that I'll have to take pcs of as I install them into the car!

How hard has it been to pull out the firewall on the half cut?

Not very hard at all. I used a sawzall and cut the clip into a smaller section. Basically just the fire wall... Then I went to Robbins Auto parts and grabbed a spot weld cutter...basically a mini hole saw that has a spring loaded center point in the middle. Cut out all the spot welds and took it all apart. I'll be doing the same once I get the car ready. Once it's all out, just line in up perfectly and start tack welding! I cant wait! BTW, Props to Jarco...That's who I got the clip from...really nice guys over there. As I stated before, it's gonna be a slow build...thanks to mother nature I am back to waiting for warm weather again. Only in New England can it be 75* and then 10" of snow in the same week....

I dont know yet....I have decided to do the engine bay semi gloss grey...I like the look of it alot. I dont want to match it with the body, nor do I want to paint it black...don't like the look. As far as the body color, it is undecided. I was thinking maybe white, then I saw the netural colors on the new nissans. I was thinking maybe along the lines of the 'desert stone' from the frontier.

Yah I love Jarco! Very fast and relieable company.

Hmm..I have had a clip in my side yard for close to a year debating on whether or not to do it...Have you started on the firewall of the car? I think thats where the hard parts are gonna be.

No I have not started cutting at the car yet. Those pics at the top are most recent...about 2 weeks ago. We had a warm spell...75*. I got super motivated and started taking her apart...then it snowed 10" and got cold again 4 days later...As it warms back up I will be doing more to the car and taking many more pics. I cant imagine that taking the firewall out of the car will be much harder than taking it out of the clip. Putting it back in may prove to be a different story! We shall see though.

Ok...a small update on my project. I have not been able to work on this car much this summer due to my job! I've been putting in lots of hrs. Between that and the GF the car sometimes comes second. However, in the event that I just sold my coupe a week ago, I now am stuck driving my DD subie wagon. Not a very satisfying ride. So once again I have starting working more on this project. Plans have changed a little. The RHD may or may not happen...I need to look into the legality of it. Also, I've decided to go for a more OEM/JDM look. I've seen so many different looks on this forum in the last few months and cannot help seeing other things that catch my eyes. Anyways, I left off this on this thread at the point where I was ready to pull the motor. This has finally been done. Thanks to DJButton, I was able to get a folding hoist to bring to the house! 'High five, very nice!' On to a few new pics...

A new lawn ornament!

She needs a little TLC with some minor rust. Surface only, no worries!

My essssr that should push 400rwhp ish when it's done.

And the car I fell in love with that cause me to change my mind from Bling Bling wide-body/Huge lipped wheels to Mild OEM/JDM concept. 90DGRZ, hope you don't mind bro. Your car is the ish and I'd like to clone it into a vert! I'll be using my Hanabi's off of my coupe, along with the Tein SD suspension. I'm really hoping to get this things on the road for at least one group drive before winter!

Sweet!! RHD conversion should take awhile for ya but im sure you will get it done. Post more pics as soon as possible. I love looking at the pictures.

Posted by: kc240guy at 8:23 PM 8/13/2007

I was thinking about doing mine like that too, but I'll leave it black. If oyu do that you should consider swapping to the tan interior and get a tan top for it.

Post Title: Re: Project Jspec603: 56k non compliant (kc240guy)
Posted by: jspec603 at 2:03 AM 8/14/2007

That would deff be a different look. I've seen the tan tops before, but was unware that the vert came with that interior option...thought that they were all black????

Post Title: Re: Project Jspec603: 56k non compliant (jspec603)
Posted by: DeXteR at 6:18 AM 8/14/2007

as far as i know, the verts never had the tan/brown interior...

i know coupes did and i'd say 90% of the interiors will swap easily and 5% with some work and the last 5% might not. the door panels will swap if you do the pillar removal or just swap the doors; the carpet and rear seat will probably need modification; and the rear panels probably won't work - they'll need to be customized somehow. as far as i can think everything else would be a direct swap. i'm a fan of the tan/brown interior and considered doing this with the tan top... but i'm going in a different direction.

i'd love to see this done though. good luck getting tan/brown rhd stuff though... you could always use vinyl paint...

Post Title: Re: Project Jspec603: 56k non compliant (DeXteR)
Posted by: jspec603 at 3:55 PM 8/14/2007

yeah...I dunno about doing the tan/brown tho. I do like it in some cars...older euro cars. I just don't think it'd be the right look for this. we'll see tho.

Well, here's to pulling old threads out of the grave! I finally, yes FINALLY was able to get my vert out of my tiny garage and up to our shop. I've been workin my butt off here and there between work, life and the GF. But here are a few updated pics. Sorry for the camera phone shots, was all I had on me at the time.

Me and my room mate pushed it up on the trailer. Went smoothly all things considered.

Here we are fresh off the trailer and into the shop!

I sand blasted the engine bay with play sand from home depot. Primed and painted with Krylon. Four coats and it looks pretty mint!

I had our in-house powder coater guy do my valve cover and greddy mani. Looks really cool in person.

And today I installed my Tein Super Drifts and Hanabi's. Also, what you can't see from the pic is that I put on my 300zx calipers and re-drilled rotors.

For those of you who remember, I was going to do the RHD swap. I opted not to do this swap at this point in time. The weather is way to nice out to be without a fun car to drive. I still have all the parts, and our winters are long indeed here in NH. So needless to say, it is still a very real possibility.

Nice work! keep it up ^^ Did you have to do any cutting to get the super drift coil-overs into the rear end of the vert? I want to use the same set with the edfc in my car and wasnt sure how much extra cutting was involved. and hey if that JDM climate control panel doesn't find a home in your car, I could def use the face plate and any of the sensors you got with your clip. I dont want to be stuck with teh busted @$$ slider controlls, so I understand if you dont either but I will def snatch them up from you if they are ever for sale.

Well, I actually have 2 digi climate controllers. :-) One came off ebay, the other with the clip. TBH, dunno if I will use either at this point. I also don't even know if either work! LOL.

Thanks for all the kind words peeps!

Post Title: Re: Project Jspec603: 56k non compliant (BigMACKenzie)

Also, the coils were as easy to install on the vert as they are on a coupe. There was zero cutting involved. The install would be much easier with the top up however. As far as the EDFC... I really don't know how well the rears would work on the vert. With the top down, the liner sits very snugly over the top of the coil. Picture if you will a sort of dome/tent over the top of the adjustment screw. I'm sure we're all clever and resourceful enough to make them work tho. I plan on trying at some point!!!

Posted by: BigMACKenzie at 3:09 PM 5/27/2008

NICE! thanks for the good news, if you have the time, take some snaps of the coilovers and how the sit in regards to the top being up/down. I wonder if the extra inches would really hurt the vert top/impede with regular driving. thanks for the help.

Post Title: Re: Project Jspec603: 56k non compliant (jspec603)
Posted by: jspec603 at 6:54 PM 5/27/2008

Well, we all know that we love pictures so here's a few I took today. I'm only test fitting the fenders and bumper on the car to see just how much farther I can drop it! Don't worry, it will all be repainted to match the car.

I've still got about a 2 finger gap between the front tire and fender. Now I know that is highly inappropriate so it will be corrected asap! On another note, I ordered a catco high flow and greddy top feed fuel rail today. If anyone is looking for that fuel rail, call 240sxmotoring! They supposedly bought all of the ones released to the US this past shipment so they will have a few!

The kit is the version select III, basicly the origin aggressive copy. I have the full kit plus the front and rear wide fenders (20mm and 50mm) that I am not going to reuse on this project.

Ya, my old coupe was the pink. It's like a bubble gum pink with medium red metal flake. Looks pretty cool, but I'm almost 30 and its time to grow up! lol As far as the Hanabi's go? Ya I'm thinkin about sellin them. Not quite yet, cause when I do sell these I'd like to swap to 5 lug and get into an 18. I want to achieve hella fitment with the next set I buy.

Here's a pic of the old coupe, before I was learned in the ways of proper fitment! LOL

Don't mind my creepy *** in the back ground. LOL I was caught totally off guard in this pic. Def not the best pic hahah.

Ya, I'm using everything but the wide fenders. If I had more cash to throw away, I' go for something a bit more uncommon. This will do for now. I can always sell it all and get something new for the car later on!

Quick update:

I've got most of the wiring put back in the car, now I just have to do the vert specific things. My turbo is on its way back from being rebuilt. Should have it running somewhat soon I hope! Sorry no pics today!

Post Title: Re: (jspec603)
Posted by: jspec603 at 7:37 PM 6/4/2008

Howdy! So my fuel rail, catco cat and rebuilt turbo allllll arrived today. Took a little time after work to do a quick mockup of the exhaust mani, turbo and down pipe extension. Need to figure out where to put my egt and uego bungs. Once we do that I'm gonna have our powder coater hit the turbo mani, down pipe extension and open dump pipe in ceramic. Just have to pick up some injectors and a bunch of braided line and this thing should be finished! Here's another engine bay teaser...

I also have another delima. I honestly don't usually care what others think about how my car looks, but I need some opinions as to what some of you would choose to do. I have the brickyard headlights and oe corners. Problem is, the corners came in two different shades of amber! I had ordered some clear corners one night off ebay but never installed. I don't want the car to look ricey. What do you guys think?

i just don't know which I will go with...

Man, I like those clear corners on it!

Angry Squirell!

Post Title:

i personally think it all depends on the color of the car... anything but white or light silver go with the clears!!

Post Title:

whats up Jspec, nice build ! i think i am one of the other 4 'verts in the area (b0ston)...

in fact i have 2 ! !!! well, one is a parts car (lmk if u need anything, still have a bunch of stuff from it)

BTW, I got a digi climate 100% working in my USDM hatch if you need help, its pretty easy, and if you are swapping everything (cabin harness/etc) it should be simple.

again, nice vert, makes me jealous, lol

Post Title: Re: (bakgwailo)

Thanks for the kind words man! I'm not swapping the harness at this point. Maybe next winter when/if I go RHD. Hopefully we can get it to work, my boss and I have done wiring (alarms, remote starts etc for a while). If not, I'll be sure to hit you up! If your in the Boston area, you should bring one of your cars to or seacoast meet on the 28th! The link is in the sig!

I think the clear corners look funny with OEM headlights... That's just my opinion.

Engine bay teaser is looking good.

Post Title:
Posted by: twistedsymphony at 9:35 AM 6/5/2008

those clears look ricey IMO

the JDM OEM headlights have a nice "smoked" look to them which continues into the OEM corners... the clear ones look like cheap plastic by comparison.

you might consider using them if you could emulate the OEM smoked look but IMO you'd be better off rocking the OEM corners with different shades of amber... you'd only notice it if you were looking at the car straight on with perfectly even lighting, and even then it'd be hard to notice unless you were looking for it.

either that or buy another set that matches and hock the spares on ebay.

BTW... I better see this thing on the roat a the seacoast meet... get to it!

I definitely agree with everyone about them looking cheap. That's why I never put them on the other car. Just one of those things that goes through someones head even though you know its wrong lol. As far as this car being on the drive, that is the goal! And unless something goes terribly wrong from here on out there should be no reason it won't be there.

Post Title: Re: (jspec603)
Posted by: bakgwailo at 12:12 PM 6/5/2008

hahaha, ONE is taking over all the other forums! lol!

but, yup, I plan on going to the seacost drive on the 28th, looking forward to it! I will probably be in the hatch though, as I don't think my GF wants to take her very out until we get it painted nicely/new top/etc.

btw, i have the full vert interior if you need anything, its grey leather. Also a bunch of top part stuff/rear windows/top motor/wires/etc

as for swapping the harness... i wasn't really thinking (i have swapped coup/hatch/etc harness, really easy), but the convertible harness is a bit different that all the other, like it has the power door look thing behind the back seat, the rear window switches/motors/top motor/etc, might be a bit more difficult that I thought.

BUT it should be doable with a soldering gun, heat shrink, FSM, patience, and a lot of paper and a pencil

Aw, tell her to bring the vert too! Let it come out and play and get some fresh air! It will be motivation to get it finished. I still don't even know if mine will be road worthy yet! I'm trying to get as much done as possible.

Installed all of those things along with the Tial wastegate, AEM UEGO and Greddy EGT. Did a bunch of heat wrap to avoid any unwanted melting. Going to be ordering some injectors by the end of the week. Going with RCs, 750cc. I also received my order for my fuel, oil feed, and coolant by-pass AN fittings and -6 AN line. I forgot how quickly those little bits add up! lol And as always, some pics!

turbo is a t3/to4e .60 .63 if I remember right, I just looked at the damn thing yesterday! hahaha

And ya, I'm gonna stay with the OE corners.

Alrighty then. I worked on the vert a bit more today. I ran the fuel lines and mounted the regulator. Also had to make a adapter bracket for the fuel rail. Be advised, the Greddy top feed rail is NOT a direct bolt on for the short port intake manifold! I think it came out ok for a quickie. The injectors are just used ones for the mock up. Anyways, on to some new pics!

Fuel Lab reg with a Tovic carbon look pressure gauge. Also notice the nifty fuel filter courtesy of my buddy over at Fujii SPL.

A quickie of the rail in hover mode with the invisible injectors.

Finally, my quickie adapter bracket for the rail. Note: I'm waiting for my injectors to show up before I mod the spacers that came with the Greddy rail, just in case they are a bit taller/shorter.

That's all for now! I'm probably going to install the Blitz down pipe, Catco cat and Greddy Ti-C exhaust tomorrow.

Post Title: Re:
Posted by: jspec603 at 7:57 PM 6/20/2008

So as stated, the full exhaust has been installed. Blitz down pipe, Catco high flow and Greddy Ti cat back. Also had my buddy finish up the intake and hot pipe too. I've also been working on some guages mounted in the instrument cluster surround, running wires and wires and more wires. Anyways, on to the pixtars!

Ohhhh...Ahhhh.

Hot pipe!

Intake! Still going to make a bracket or somthing to stop vibration. Will also be replacing that silly filter too.

And another perdy engine bay shot!

Also, on Monday I'll be dropping off my fenders and kit to a local body shop. Should be starting it up soon too! YAY! That's all for now folks!

I know you already stated that you're gonna stick with the OEM corners, but I thought I might just offer up another option that I personally think would look nice as hell...

If you can pick up a can of Niteshades (or whatever the hell it's called) lens paint, you might try doing a smoked effect on the clear corners, just enough to match up with the OEM Halogen headlamps.

I just think it would look clean... and I have a slight OCD about symmetry so the differing shades of amber would piss me off everytime I saw em... and it would be in the back of my head whenever I was around the car.

Post Title: Re: (FeintMind)
Posted by: jspec603 at 10:48 PM 6/21/2008

I've actually thought about doing that. I've also thought about trying to paint or tint (with a film) the clear corners solid amber, along the lines of the Tomei covers. It may/may not look decent. I do agree about the different shaded OE corners. I personally think it looks like crap. Thanks for the suggestion!

So get this. I call the body guy today, figured it's mid week should be close to being done with my parts. Nope. He's had the parts for a week and a half and has not even touched them yet. On top of that, it's a short week because of the holiday. So looks like I won't get them back until next week sometime.

I know it's not all that bad. I'm just getting anxious to drive the car again. Besides, the guy reassured me that it would be ready by the end of the first week. lol, so much for that.

Here's some pics of what I chose to go with for a coolant overflow bottle. Didn't like the looks of the yellowed factory bottle. Those boxy aluminum ones look too over powering in the engine bay. So I found this little guy. Dimension are 3"x10" (w x l) it's bottom fed so you can't see too much of the hose. There is a second tube for run off that sticks up almost to the top inside the bottle. Anyways, pics of it and installed.

Opinions and comments?

Time for another small update! So far the coolant overflow seems to be working ok, I'll be putting it to the test on the dyno soon! I also got my fenders and kit back from the body guy, FINALLY!!! Came out pretty good, now I just need to put it all on and have my buddy buff the rest of the car.

This is kinda a crappy pic, poor lighting on that side of the shop. I'll definitely post some when its all on the car.

Actually just put the stripe on the front and rear bumpers and front fenders today. I do have a reason tho, the car had been painted and they masked around the original stripe on the doors and rear quarters. Had I removed that, who knows what woulda happened! The car will get and entire paint job hopefully next year sometime.

As for the wheels, i dont think the fronts can get anymore flush without sticking out, and I'm searching for a decent spacer for the backs. Once again, I have my heart set on new wheels anyways, so they are only temporary! I had gotten a bit carried away when i got my fender roller and did the car forgetting that I yet to acquire wheels to fit the flare! DOH! Here's a pic with the wheels in the front straight...they're fine. Can the car go a tad bit lower? Ya prolly.

Maybe when it gets a whole new paint job. I do however kinda like the look of the doors... gives it something different that the other 240's don't have.

The small things that still need some attention are parts of the interior, trunk and a good buff on the rest of the car.

Well, today was D-day! Dyno day that is! Went in this morning and swaped in my Z32 MAF and new plugs. On it went to the dyno and TA-DA! She's now fully tuned! She's got a base number of 283whp on the waste gate spring (12psi). On the high boost setting on my Profec B she's puttin down 403whp and 360ft lbs at about 5700 RPM at 22psi!

I'll post the plot as soon as it gets emailed to me!

As promised, the plot! This is showing the three boost settings, 12psi (on the waste gate with the controller off) 16psi (low setting on the Profec B) and 22psi (high setting on the Profec B). The green represent the HP number while the blue represent the TQ.

Thanks for all the great comments guys! I honestly could not have completed this project with out the Nico forum! Seeing others builds really motivated me on those days when I just didn't feel like doing anything!

I'm really hoping to get this things on the road for at least one group drive before winter!

lol... oh the irony

what ever happened the the mild oem/jdm concept, LOL

anyways, looking good man.

(p.s. it's ironic because Chuck aka 90 dgrz has that same exact aero you have on his car now, LOL http://img.photobucket.com/alb...0.jpg talk about irony huh)

Nah Mark, I can't go this year. I'm already taking too many days off for other things this month.

Adrian, funny thing is, Chucks was my original goal. I had this kit laying around and wanted the car on the road soooo bad. SuperMade should be in the near future!

I think it would look good if you ambered the clear corners or smoked them like the headlights (assuming you can get to the inside faily easy)

Anyways fellas, Project Jspec603 Phase 2 has begun! Just when you thought it was all over, I went and purchased something new!

I missed being the first vert on here with this kit by about a month or two, but as far as I know I'll still be the first vert with the S13 front! A few other things are in the planning stages as well. New exhaust, either buy or build one. New turbo setup, the old setup is now sold!!! You guys sure are gonna love my new plans.

You haven't ever been to Ohio then I'm interested to see how this progresses gl

So I finally have some news to share! Today, I removed the current turbo setup from the Vert. I'm sellin it to a friend tomorrow and will be starting progress on a different custom setup. Now, I'm not going to promise tons of pics right away. This is going to take some time, everything is being built from scratch. I'm still collecting parts (and money) but wanted to let everyone know that there is promise of pics in the semi near future! Also, I think it's safe to say that you all will like what we're going to be doing.

Also, this "kit" is going to be a proto-type of sorts. We (Fujii-SPL) are going to consider producing this kit and selling it if all turns out well. However, that is the last thing we are worried about at this point.

my buddies HKS hi-power is worse, mine is a lot better because i had to make my own cat-delete section becuase my manifold flange was farked up, used it to raise it up some, mines high enough to where i had to trim half the rubber out ot the inside of the hangers and use hose clamps around to hold it up, and the hangers on the muffler in the back are are flared out at like a 45 degree angle, the muffler tip clears my tow hook by about 2 millimeters

Sooooo.... It's been a while. Between moving to a new house and just money in general, I just haven't had time to work on the car or do any updates. Buuuuut, it's over due so here we go!

First off, the vert's goin 5 lug! Here's the new fronts installed. Pics of the rear will be along shortly.

Here's a side view of the new wheels. Fronts are 18x10 +15. May/May not tub the front fenders. Absolutely ZERO rubbing issues anywhere (with out tires that is). This pic is also without the suspension being compressed or adjusted, as well as no adjustment on the camber plates. I have adjusted the camber plates to the maximum negative camber aloud by the plates and the top of the wheel sits flush with the fender.

Pulled the rear sub frame. Have a freshly painted sub frame ready to go in along with a few other goodies. Upgrading to a VLSD, rear 5 lug, boxing in all the OE arms and repainting, also have a full Energy Suspension bushing kit being installed. Once I get a few extra dollars I'll upgrade to a SPL suspension arms.

While the rear sub frame is out, I wire brushed all the surface rust. Then I used a rust stopper made by SEM products. Finally, I undercoated the entire area above the sub frame, rear wheel wells and over the exhaust canister (we all know they rust right there). No pics of the final undercoated area as of yet.

I also installed one of those nifty little throttle rotors you see all over the place. Is supposed to help throttle response. If nothing more, at least it matches the rest of the stuff under the hood!

And here is where all the really good stuff will fill in! Still working on the setup, but it should be pretty intense once its done!

Also, if anyone needs a front mount kit let me know! I have the Blitz LM off my vert being sold so I can swap over to a liquid to air setup.

MOAR PICS SOON! Keep an eye out, we've got the car in the shop and a bunch more parts to go in! Also, I'll be swapping every exterior light to LED (minus the headlights which are already HID).

Post Title: Re: Project Jspec603: 56k non compliant (jspec603)
Posted by: jspec603 at 7:39 PM 11/1/2009

So I've got a minor update. Did some more one the vert this weekend. Finished blasting and painting all the rear suspension arms. Also finished installing all of the rear Energy Suspension bushings and did a loose assembly of the rear arms and knuckles. Just gotta pick up a pair of new ball joints and the rear can be completed. We also re-installed the subframe with some aluminum bushings, should take alot of play out of it. Soon the dif will be put back in along with the axles etc. You can also see how the undercoating came out in one of the pics.

Sorry for the crappy cell pics, I completely forgot to bring the camera with me. Still wanted to document this portion of the build tho!

Much more to come soon! More parts are on their way as we speak.

Post Title: Re: Project Jspec603: 56k non compliant (jspec603)
Posted by: jspec603 at 1:04 PM 11/3/2009

So I had another package of parts arrive today. This is most of the parts needed to switch over to a liquid to air setup. We're going to fab up our own water lines, and I already have a 12v water pump at the shop. This will allow for a much shorter path of travel from the turbos to the TB. It also has much less of a pressure drop by using these setups as well, along with better cooling! All in all it should benefit the car greatly! On to the pics!

The heat exchanger, aka radiator. It measures 27x7x2, and has a fair amount of mass to it. Should do the job of cooling just fine.

A pair of 7" fans to mount to the heat exchanger. A bit of extra cooling never hurts!

The intercooler its self. Core dimensions are 4.5x4.5x9". Coolant enters in on each end tank of the core. Has mounting provisions on the air inlet and outlet end tanks.

And the least fun of it all, some 3" piping. This will be cut, chopped, spliced etc to make for the proper fitment!

Soon I'll be posting install pics of the setup. Along with manifold parts and production.

Some one buy my Blitz intercooler kit!
