Here's the POS '71 510 that I owned for awhile....never got it running, had spectacular rust problems.

I'd like to score a nice Fairlady roadster at some point though.

That's one bada$$ Z.

Heres my 72 510, all original 28k miles (in need of buff). I bought it from an old lady that bought it brand new from a dealer 10 miles from my house (no longer exists, lewiston datsun).

pulled behind an rv for most of those miles, I have since removed the tow bar (bumper 100% intact). Absolutely no rust, the rear tires are original and the brake drums still have all of their original paint. Had to pop that rear hub cap off because the brakes were locked up.

I dont have any interior pictures but its straight out of the show room pretty much (new old car smell).

Still debating whether or not to keep it 100% original show queen style, or fix it up

Those really aren't 'black pearl' style wheels. They were the optional factory alloy wheel for the 74-78 U.S. 260Z-280Z.

the bp used that style wheel with the recessed aread colored black or whire I can't remember which, but thats the style that all the black pearls came with

Actually the BPE came with stock steel wheels and hupcaps with this wheel as an option.

Nice looking datsuns!

On that 510 of mine, I was thinking of retrofitting nissan oem eccs efi system onto the original l16, but the l18 efi manifold is one rare bugger.

PS. If anyone knows where a l18 efi intake manifold is for sale, let me know!

just re-joined the 510 ranks. i sold my last one 10 years ago. here's the new ride. vg30 big cams, headers exhaust, 300tt brakes, coil overs, adjustable rear susp. i bought it with the idea that i'd swap out the v6 but NO-WAY! this thing runs incredible. besides i'm an NA guy and i think you'd need a turbo to get this kind of power. a fringe benefit is the amazing ferrari v-12-esque wail at full throttle. sorry picture was too big, i'll post it later.

Awesome pics guys. Seeing those is the inspiration I need in order to not give up. I am doing a KA24DE swap on my '71 Estate. I can only hope that it will someday look as clean as KApwr'd510's Estate. I should be done with the swap this week but it has not been easy since I bet a friend I could do it for less than $300. Here is the link to my old pics (before the swap began) http://huntbrothers.kicks-***....state/ and here is a crappy pic of the swap now.

Test your knowledge: aside from the motor swap, what doesn't look right in this pic?

Suicide Wipers

Bingo!

Guess it wasn't too hard with that pic and the engine taking up 90% of it, lol.

The previous owner of the Estate made them that way as a cheap solution to the passenger wiper motor and mount rusting through. So he got the Australian driver's side wiper (U.S. passenger side) and welded the bezel to the stock one. He did a great job, you can't even tell where he welded it.

Anywho, I realy like your car and I promise never to compare mine to yours, lol. Only that I hope it can be half as nice.

the "suicide wipers" ( we call them "Mc Donalds wipers" over here ), came factory on all 1968 models of the 510.
in 1969, they changed to the conventional style wipers.

But you can tell your wipers were modified like that from original convential style ones.

Yeah a buddy of mine mentioned that the '68 models came like that only after I posted it. My bad. In hindsight I would rather have the traditional style wipers as they can't get stuck on each other. I just hate keeping them far enough apart because they look a bit off.

They get stuck on each other on the way back down if they are not seperated enough. When they ARE seperated enough they look ugly sitting on the windshield 3" apart and the driver side wiper is at an angle.

sweet...those wagons always bring back a lot of memories. My dad had two of them and ran the heck out of them. He took me to school for many years in the beige one he had.... Nice project Man......

Thanks. Although I must say that even though it's a stock 240SX engine and tranny in a car that weighs 600lbs less AND it's not running P/S P/B A/C EGR or the clutch fan, it doesn't run as fast because the rear end is a 3.70 instead of the stock 240SX 4.08531 AND my O2 sensor is in the old EGR tube port. But it definitely runs a lot faster than the L20b that was in it.

Today must be bearings day because I had to replace the LF wheel bearings and seal along with the throwout bearing.

Picky, picky...... just kidding...

I learned how to drive stick on my Dad's by taking the wagon on a trip around the neighborhood while he was taking a nap. By the time I "barely" made it back, the clutch was gone. Pops was upset that day,.... I thought I share that with you...I will be keeping tabs with your project, looks good.

A 2000GTX is not a straight six version of the 610 pictured above. The closest thing we got in the US to a straight six version of the 610 would be the 810. And I see 610's (the red, white and blue car pictured above) all the time. One came in second in the 'other Datsun' catagory at the recent Japanese Classic Car Show in Long Beach. You're just not looking in the right places, I guess. But I might suggest visiting some of the more vintage Datsun sites for info, rather than posting bad info about them here.

Post Title:
Posted by: KAestate at 10:39 AM 10/24/2006

I agree with MIG.

Also the 280Z pictured above is technically a 280ZG. I know I'm being anal but aren't we all.

Post Title:
Posted by: Mr1der at 4:47 PM 10/24/2006

with anality also comes info.

difference between a Z and ZG?

when I said I've not seen a 610, I meant in person

if the 2000GT and GTX aren't part of the 610 lineage.....then what are they?

from what I've gathered, they're an L20 powered 610 Bluebird, either with a 2 barrel carb in GT trim or twin SU carb's for a 10 hp increase.

the L20 carried over to the 810.

trying to catch up with 40 years of history is giving me a hell of a headache, any aspirin and advice?

Post Title: Re: (Mr1der)
Posted by: Mig at 7:42 PM 10/24/2006

The 2000GTX has it's own lineage. Skyline. Starting in 1957-1963 with the first generation known as the ALSI 1 which was actually built by Prince Motors. Gen 2, 1963-1966 was known as the S50 and was the frist one they raced. There was no 1967 as the company was in transition. Gen 3, 1968-1972, the C10, was designed still by Prince but funded by Nissan who bought out Prince in 1968. This is the one known as a "Hakouska". Gen 4, 1973-1977, the C110, was exclusively Nissan. The is the one known as the Kenmeri or Ken & Mary. That's the one you pictured. Gen 5, 1977-1981, the C210. Gen 6, 1981-1985 is the R30. Gen 7, 1985-1989, the R31. Gen 8, 1989-1994, the R33. Gen 10, 1999-2002, the R34. No Bluebird anywhere in that lineage. I could go through the Bluebird lineage-310, 410, 411, 510, 610, 810 etc. but you asked about the 2000GTX and it's part of the Skylne lineage posted above. From 2003 up it's based on the Infiniti G35.

Post Title:
Posted by: Mr1der at 7:53 PM 10/24/2006

I've still found that the 2000GTX title was on the Bluebird as was the 2000GT. The main difference between the two models was the carb option on the L20.

I'm assuming Nissan used this designation on both models.

this would be the 610 take on the 2000GTX.

same goes for the 2000GT. true or am I just getting bad info?

I DID find the difference between a Z and ZG though

these are ugly, but I still love them

Mig, you're clearly a person with a long history of Datsuns...what've you had?

Post Title: Re: (Mr1der)
Posted by: Mig at 5:05 AM 10/25/2006

The 610 series is part of the Bluebird family. I think they actually refered to it as the 180B overseas. Besides the ones in my signature, I've owned a 70 and a 72 240Z, several 510s, other pickups including three 70 PL521s, a 68 520, and a 73 620, a 410 sedan (66 or 67, I cant recall), a 1970 SPL311 1600 roadster, a 1980 200SX, a 1979 HLA10 (510), a 1980 HLA10 (510), a 1974 B210 hatchback, etc. The 280ZX you've pictured is not a ZG but rather a 280ZXR which was a rather limited production car made in the early 80s on the S130 platform. The ZG was based on the S30 series Z. It was introduced in Japan in late 71 to homologate the the 240Z for Group 4 racing. The main differences between it and the export model 240Z are the long nose, the riveted on overfenders, the headlight covers, the rear spoiler, and the fender mounted mirrors.

that's a hell of a list there...I'm aware it's a ZX-R, it was maid for the sole purpose of making that whale tail legal for racing. I'm wanting to say only 300 got made to meet the required amount of production models, it might have been 500 though....

I'd love to have one or a Red and Black 10th anniv car at some point. I've actually seen a black and gold in a junkyard

Datsun/Nissan is just so rich in history....

kudos on owning one of the ugliest Silvia's made

I got lucky and scored a free turbo S12 200sx.

within a few years, I'd like to have a 240Z or a Fairlady Roadster (I'm actually surprised that someone 6'4" would be able to drive one in an almost normal position.)

It makes a little more power than stock as well.

That dyno run was done before I redid the exhaust with a larger one. I have driven the car for 40,000 miles and it has never let me down. Yes that is at the wheels. It makes more than that with the new exhaust, but I haven't had it back on the dyno yet.

Very cool. Wonder how is that 1200 of yours doing today.

An A series engine in performance tune is so much fun to drive. The way I see it, it is about having fun and feeling the better performance the engine ( any engine )can achieve.
I do not really care if there are faster cars around. If that was the case, I would not dive untill I can buy a Bughatti 600HP factory!
Your 1200 rocks!

That is an awesome car. Here in the US we got the B210 with the A series engine. The Datsun140Z and Datsun160Z are L series engined "Datsun Sunny Excellent " ( as known in Japan). These cars were made in the sport spirit Datsun was delivering at the time. That is why it was designated by factory as the Datsun 140"Z" and datsun 160"Z" ( L14 and L16 respectively.)

What are your plans for that car?? I have seen very nice 140 and 160Z s and those were used extensively in road and rallye competition overseas, South Africa and Africa. In Europe the "Z"s can be found in Portugal were these Datsuns participate up untill today at races like the famous "Estoril" portuguese races. Australia saw some of those "Z" or "Excellent" Datsuns, although imported , not sold in Australia.
One famous 160"Z" had the factory L series competition engine with the also factory competition cross flow cylinder head. It can be seen in the first picture.

I had a barely street legal modified engine in the Z but it dropped a valve. Instead of redoing hte motor I thought I'd drop a SR20DET motor and gearbox in and modify that instead.

The only problem is getting a motor with a wiring loom and ECU in South Africa is a bit of a problem.

Hi.

Those "Z"s are awesome. When ever you have some more pixes, would love to see them.

About the ECU and wiring loom, I will ask my bud Brad. He knows about SR20s, I will ask him about the wiring and ECU.
If you want, you can also have an SR20 with twin DCOE carburetors, and it would run and perform very well. Think about that.
You must know, "Kemono" the beast, the blue South African 160Z. Nice car.
back to the SR20, an SR20 with screaming twin DCOEs.....that should sound like music.....

Cool. Too bad you do not have it anymore. Your 160USSS was the one we did not get here in the US. The 160USSS had rear independent suspension like Datsuns 610 and 510s do in here. My 710 has leaf springs. I love it though, it works fine.
Also, the dash/gauges in the 160USSS are awesome, with a big tachometer and speedometer, followed by round smaller gauges for temperature, gas tank , oil pressure and I believe battery condition.
If I could get my hands on a gauge cluster like that! that would be awesome!
There is a nice Datsun crowd in SA.

I've just bought these within the past 2 1/2 months, here's what I'm starting with. The red '79 is an automatic, the silver '82 has a 5 speed. The body's kind of rough on the red one, mainly on the drivers sde front fender, then a few small dings on the pass side but nothing major. The silver one had a silver fender on it that was trashed, so I swapped the fender from the 2+2. Also changed the wheels on the red one since that pic was taken and now have the wheels of the 2+2 on it. Same as the wheels on the silver one. The red ones the one I'm giving to my son. The rear springs were sagging bad, and the rear shocks were blown, so we swapped the rear spring and shock assemblies from the 2+2 into the red one too, that made a major ride and handling improvement.

I know everybody else loves to mod and race 510's and Z series, but I have fun with my 1975 Datsun 710. It sure has a lot of stock parts, because improving the engine would not be worth it. I took this (then blue) ugly piece of crap and turned it into something worth looking at. Here are a few pics of my first and only ride:

I like the look of a black hood on a red car. Sure the mods you did to it made it a better car. Keep it up, it is a nice car and there is plenty of stuff you can do to it performance wise, lots of parts and paraphenalia available for Z Datsuns.

Post Title: Re: (datsun710)
Posted by: jaimesix at 12:56 PM 6/2/2007

There is plenty you can do to the engine to make it worth of performance modifications. Everything that works on a Datsun 510 works on a 710 , except rear suspension wise which are different in the US ( overseas saw Datsun 510s with rigid rear axles, but in the US 510 wagons are also leaf sprung).
The front suspension on a 710, 610 and 510 are the same.Rear suspension on a 710 , 610 and 610 Station Wagons are also the same.
It is not a matter of parts available or the vehicle being worth of it , but a personal choice. If you do not like the car, you simply do not like it.
No car is a piece of crap , it becomes one under careless owners and/or cars being victims of oversight. Seems like the previous owner of your wagon did not take good care of it.
I have a friend that has a wagon he is fixing up/modifying, and he is looking for tail lights. If you ever want to sell those, let me know. Those are not easy to find.
Here are a couple pictures of Datsun 710 Station Wagons. Those make fine cars, and can be made to perform and outperform many vehicles, specially front wheel driven ones.( part of my love for Datsuns, these early Datsuns are rear wheel driven, contrary to today's front wheel driven crappy cars.)

Yeah the black hood came about when I decided to start working on prepping it for paint. The hood looked like it was in really bad shape until I striped it down to the bare metal. What looked like 7 or 8 big dents turned out to be simply 6 or 8 coats of paint that had chipped off all the way down to the metal. Once I stripped it there wasn't really much to do to it other than primer. The rest of the red was painted over the gold by a previous owner, without even stripping the wax or attempting to do any other prep work (like sanding it), so all the red is peeling off in large areas now. Going to take the entire body down at least to the factory gold, further if need be ot sharpen the original body lines again.Performance wise we are thinking about rebuilding the spare R200 diff we have sitting here, and swapping that with the R180 in the red Z to make use of the lower 3.900 ratio, and might mook for a limited slip unit to put in it when we do it. Also been looking at the 3.1 bigbore stroker kits, since I have a spare engine that neeeds a crank anyways. Son wants to build it up for canyons and 1/4 mile, so acceleration is more important than top speed anyways. Sometime this week I'll probably do a valve adjustment on it too, since the rockers are beginning to get a little loud.

Post Title: Re: (Spraguepsycho1)
Posted by: jaimesix at 12:52 PM 6/4/2007

Mr1der.....yes, nice 710. Datsun 710s were known overseas as:
1) Datsun Violet ( Japan )
2) Datsun 140J ( a 710 with a factory L14 engine )
3) Datsun 160J ( Datsun 710 with a L16 engine )
4) Datsun 160JSSS ( Datsun 710 with twin carburetion and independent rear suspension like Datsuns 510, 610 and Zs in the US
5) Datsun 160USSS ( Same as Datsun 160JSSS, sold in South Africa)

The front area is different to the US 710 version due to the fact that american 710s were sold with the american law required bigger bumpers. For that matter, our valances/aprons and fenders ( front ) are shorter, due to the fact that the bigger bumpers were covering all the area of the apron and lower end of fenders. The overseas valance hangs lower and the fenders also drop lower to meet the valance at a lower point closer to the ground.
The grille is different too. I scored an overseas grille for my ride. I am in the process of getting fenders and an apron/valance here from overseas. Add to that a bumper ( overseas edition ) and the end result will be a Datsun 710 that will look like the Station wagon in the picture seen.
Nice!

SpraquePsyco1....too bad some people are messy and primitive in their car care habits. That lazy paint job the previous owner applied must be falling off like you said. The good thing is that probaly you can get rid of it by polishing with an orbital polisher. The gold paint underneath might be good enough and might respond positively to polishing once the red paint is gone.

Sounds like the engine kit and the differential you are planning to use will work. For canyon driving, you are right, no need for top end speeds, but fast acceleration and swiftness. You will need your brakes in good order, steel braded lines and vented brakes.
I have seen in racing cars ventilation tubes installed , which have an opening on the front under the valance, and the tube ( any plastic or tin tube ) held in place with tie downs, ending in front of the rotors, sending cooling air to them.
Sway bars will be great too. I am installing sway bars ( By Addco ) in my Datsun 710 and 610. They have sway bars for most cars, including Z Datsuns.
Aside from paint inperfections you mentioned, your Datsun looks solid and great. Datsuns are great cars, and never become obsolete, with some performance upgrades, challenge any vehicles.

Cool!!!

{ just edited the word"bumper" , written in error instead of the word "fender" }

Yeah all of the Z's here already have the factory swaybars on them and seem to corner pretty flat, just need lower profile tires to reduce the sidewall rolling action. Can't afford new wheels yet, so looking at putting 215/60/14's on the rears and 205/60/14's on the fronts. Then eventually a swap to a 17 inch combo with 45 or 50 series tires. The gold paint looks pretty good but there's a few old repair spots that make a repaint necessary. Talked to a painter today that quoted me around $200 to spray it if I do all the prep work and supply him with the paint. Want to go with a metalic red/burgundy pearl over black on the red one, and black with a metallic purple pearl on the silver one. Just looking for those glowing body lines.

It's amazing how much our favorite cars can become so much of a part of our lives, sort of a symbol of who we are. I get long winded when it comes to talking about classic Mustangs, and can talk about them forever. In time I may become the same way when it comes to these Z's, they're already startng to grow on me.

Yes, a very nice Nissan truck indeed. Looks to be a 4X4 ( four wheel drive ). I really like that model truck, specially the 4X4. I remember those 4X4s, look tough, the best looking 4X4 Nissan truck off all times in my view.

BTW, I checked that lionk you have in there 160Z.....someone has to tell that site's master it is no B210, but a 160Z .
B210s with A series motors are technically HLB210 cars ( KHLB210 for coupes, no "K" for sedans ). 140Z, 160Z and the Sunny Excellent 1400 are PB210 cars.

I will take pictures of his this week when I go to his place.
NSRZ32 , this one looks nice. Some body work needed but solid and strong overall. The engine must be in good shape, the wheel and gauges show some nice touch.

Great purchase.

yeah 3 2's are nice if you don't mind tuning and syncing etc repetedly, but if I was going to dump the FI I'd just set it up with a single holley 4 barrel and call it good. I actually prefer to keep the fuel injection due to the better fuel atomization, and flatter torque curve that comes with it. Not to mention the auto car seems to be getting around 32mpg, with the manual comming in right around 36mpg (gotta love OD) right now. You know as the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", of course there's the other school of thought that I follow sometime of "If it ain't broke ,modify it until it does break, fix it then modify some more".

Yep, it is 4x4. It only has ~42k original miles on it too, but isn't running right now due to a carb problem (which I posted in another thread...)
It's a 1982 Datsun 720 Kingcab. One of the last few vehicles w/ the Datsun name, which they discontinued in '83.

I'll try to add some more pictures later when I'm home. That was the only one I happened to have online.

Post Title: Re: (180sxfaktory)

Hello! I'm new to the Datsun community, and I am in the process of buying this car seen here. I just asked the owner how he preferred to receive the funds for it. We agreed on $350 for the car and spare parts in the rear. It's a '72 Estate 510. My intent is not to try to restore it with all of the original parts and go mild 1 off and keep things spartan and clean with a minimalist approach to styling.

So, I must start getting smart and study this car via this forum and all of the tech data available on the internet. Any help/wisdom you guys and girls can impart, much appreciated in advance!

Post Title: Re: (160Z)
Posted by: jaimesix at 2:42 AM 6/21/2007

Datsun made a lot of 510 estates, or station wagons as we know them here in US
Those are great cars. I hope that one gets a nice paint job to protect the metal. Keeping it stock or modified is your choice, but a good paint job in a necesity more than a cosmetic thing, because good paint keeps rust away!

Post Title: Re: (jaimesix)
Posted by: 180sxfaktory at 11:59 AM 6/21/2007

Paint is one of the last things body-wise that I am gonna do. I can tell already that the whole car needs to be hot tanked. Whatever metal that is left will be the starting point for fresh metal to be grafted and shaped, and I am sure there are weak points in the chassis that need to be built up, and once that's done, I'll get a good primer base followed by good paint.

Would like to learn more about it. The FJ20 is an awesome engine, I like it more than the SR20. The only problem in the US is availability of parts/engines. The FJ20 was designed for race cars, it is bullet proof.

Nice Datto.

Thanks for the comments guys.

The cooler setup is from a RS Subaru Liberty (unsure if you get this model). It's a water to air setup, so the heat exchanger sits behind the grill in front of the radiator, and the water pump is mounted behind the front valance.

No cutting required, that's why I went with it. Truth be told I'm going to have to change it tho, as I think I've reached it's power capacity / efficiency. So front mount air to air, or a better W2A core is needed.

Only "modification" I've done to it so far, is to paint the greyish part of the taillamp surrounds black.

210s FTW! I wish I had the front end your model versus mine. You have to love the awesome 0-60 times on these beast
She unfortunately has 239xxx miles I think the engine was rebuilt about 10k miles ago. Currently my daily driver.

Haha, yep, the performance is just BLISTERING. I need me a new set of wheels, I HATE the standard ones with the hubcaps.

I wish there was a lot of ready available performance parts for the car, such as suspension, extractors, etc. I think I shall be putting a cherrybomb sidepipe on it though in spring.

Also, I really want some tinted windows, as you can't get away with ANYTHING in this car. Be glad you live in Texas, you don't have to deal with this wonderful thing we call snow, and it's body-eating partner "road salt."

Ya there isn't much performance for the 210 in the US, I know tomei makes performance parts for the A series engines but I doubt you will find them in the states.

An A series with a cherrybomb oh god, it would go from like 1.5" exhaust to 3"

Ya my 210 has some dark tint compared to what I'm use to. I'm glad that I never have to deal with snow/ice, not like matters a few years ago when we got ice on the roads the TDPS ran out of salt in one day. After that the roads were officially closed for like the next 3 days.

Cherrybombs sound quite good on A-series motors actually!

Apparently, the Datto A-series engine, is a dead copy of the BMC A-engine. Which is capable of some good power numbers.

It's in shockingly good condition considering how old it is. THere was some rust here and there. but i am working on it. the interior was what needed the most work. And I have been doin this all myself. So don't expect super pro work. I have more photos but i wanted to see if i can even post them properly first! haha. PS someone tell me how to put photos up properly, please! D:

I just picked this up last month. I am planning rear disc conversion, install the 3.70 Subaru LSD, replacing the Eagle wheels and tires with something nicer (any suggestions?), and then have the body work done and paint it. I was thinking of doing an orange and black BRE style paint.

Sorry, having a problem posting the direct image links. There's also a before and after tuning dyno results sheets.
