paintless dent removal, does dry ice work?

I have heard a lot of people using dry ice to get little dents out of the body? has anyone tried this? or is this

It actually works - depends on the area. It works best if it is a big flat area and the ding is relatively shallow. I have not done that personally, but I have seen it done before.

what exactly is involved in the process? Just hold dry ice on the car and it gets cold enough that the metal contrats and pops back into place?

And how small of dents are we talking about? Someone just backed into my car last Sunday and now I have a 3" diameter dent that is about 3/4" deep. That would probably be too big right?
