I gotta say this board is pretty quiet. I know it's new and that minivan owners are not usually that enthusuiatic about being such but I was hoping the Quest would be a little different. I've posted a few polls to see if we can't get some people posting a little more on here.

I think its amazing there is a Quest Forum. It could be stereotypical thoughts, but maybe someone here should throw some 20's on their Quest and an intake and exhaust, maybe some headers. I've seen ONE Modified Quest my whole life. It was pretty nice. Mexican lady driving it. Had 2 kids with her. The Van was Black with Nice 18" chrome wheels, what seemed like a cat-back exhaust, probably custom. It had a nice growl to it (it is after all a Nissan VQ motor) and a chrome grille and accents to the step rails. Two big TV's on the headliner and 2 subwoofers in the rear cargo area. I should have taken a picture....interesting to see.

I saw a Nissan Quest with a bad*ss body kit! LOL. I was in hawaii with my family and in one of the parking garages there was a Quest with a full body kit (front sides and rear) and with a HUGE (like 2 ft. above the roof) dolphin spoiler. It was freakin sweeeet. LOL

^^ I know that's pretty random but just wanted to make a comment about how cool people can make their minivans!

Well guys you there are tons of things to talk about beyond mods, I'm in the Rogue forum and have made like 1000 posts in the past year and a bit and none were related to mods, other than my hitch and wiring I guess.

Maybe the fact that nobody is posting here is an indication of the good quality of this vehicle, most people post or read existing threads when they're having problems or need more info about their vehicle, silence probably means everybody is having a good experience and there are no mysteries to solve....

...Or they haven't stumbled or bothered to get online about their Quest van.

My family owns a preowned 2001 Quest with the VG33 170 hp engine (can you tell I'm a car enthusiast yet?). We've had it since about 2006 when my dad got it from a repo sale for $5000 (bluebook value was about $7000). with about 130000 miles or so. Came with a built in LCD tv/VCR with video input. We mostly got it because we needed something cheap to haul around inventory for our small business. It was in good exterior shape, and the interior was mostly clean and good condition.

Now onto the fun stuff...at least what I can remember...

When we got it, it had an exhaust leak (and just today I found out through another forum, it seems like the Nissan VG33 3.3 liter V6 engine is prone to this leak around the exhaust manifold). $300 fix.

Another few thousand miles later the transmission is acting up (can't remember now) and also the hoses were leaking coolant. Got the hoses taken care of for about $70

New tires, timing belt, other belts (?) $800

A/C stopped working. Needed freon/alternative gas. Seemed like a leak.

Transmission issue was with some gear not shifting I think 3rd would hesitate..temporary fix for $120.

Took van back a few months later and spent $1200 and got the transmission taken care of so it runs smooth now. That was about 2 years ago.

Battery wire is corroded, incorrect size, have to jiggle the cable in order to start the van.

O2 sensor error, misfire/ knock error codes. CEL is on for a while, still is I think.

Dash instruments lose power randomly while driving, scaring the driver into thinking power is lost, then the lights/instruments come back on right away...loose battery wire apparently. Got that taken care of last year.

Driver's side power window regulator went bad (famous Nissan issue).. got that taken care of for free later during oil change visit at dealership (somehow I convinced the Nissan service adviser that it was the tech's fault for rolling it down despite the little piece of tape covering the button)...I pulled the "We own 3 different Nissans!" and he didn't look happy but did it anyway.

Belts (whichever ones seemed to have been missed) replaced. $120.

Of course, the passenger side front window regulator now took a crap and the window will not roll up so it's not used...till today we haven't bothered to spend the $70-100 to fix it.

Sure enough, the freon leaked away and we lost A/C. Drove this past entire summer with NO A/C... my poor dad (good thing we only used it in the morning and at night...oh and only rolling the driver side window down.)

Engine started with its misfire/rough idle whatever -- I replaced 5 of the 6 spark plugs over about 2 years ago. Seemed to help. Dad got all 6 spark plugs replaced again just past month and that seems to fix it somewhat. Still behaves odd at low revs sometimes.

I can hear another sound which seems like a leak... yet again, but this time I only notice it most when outside with someone driving it away.

Got A/C fixed last month for a few hundred bucks ($200-300?) because we HAD to, with guests from out of town visiting and the Quest being the"drive them around car."

Mileage right now 170000 I think.

Total cost in repairs is well over $3000 by now + the $5000 we bought it for. Went from a good deal at first to a PITA almost. But it's otherwise in good shape...except the lcd TV got knocked out a few times with random furniture we were carrying...

You like?

Interesting experience, like you said the 3000 bucks isn't so bad considering you bought it for cheap and it likely has all the bugs worked out for some time to come, but it's the PITA time commitment and lack of convenience that sucks.

For a relatively new van I'm surprised at the problems with the transmission, could you elaborate on exactly what the temporary fix involved, and how long do you think it'll last before major work needs to be done? At least it's not a CVT, I shudder to think about transmission problems in my CVT Rogue since the part isn't serviceable at the moment and it costs qutie a bit more than a conventional to replace.....

If you read, the transmission was fixed "properly" at a later time.

I think the temp fix was putting some kinda fluid in with the transmission fluid. I believe one of the bearings was messed up which was causing metal shavings to clog parts of the internal workings, causing bad shifting from 2nd to 3rd something of that sort. It sort of worked most of the time, but that is why we had to dish out the $1200 something to get the parts replaced and done right later.

And no, $3k in repairs for a $5k car that was at the BEGINNING worth $7k is a cost of $8 over 3 years, so no not worth the pain and money. Haha. That's my opinion on it though. As for getting the problems fixed and lasting a while, well the rough engine idle issue is still there, not sure what that is about, and also the slight engine exhaust leak I think I'm hearing is also another pain.

Kerrton.....Nissan just extended the warranty on all Nissan CVTs to 10 years or 120,000 miles. No kidding. Follow this link:

Since we all love updates on 4 year old posts, here goes....haha.

Sold the '01 van a year or so ago, I believe my folks said it had 200,000 miles by that time but had been mostly unused for the last year since our toy store closed. It's crazy to think that since I posted the laundry list above, I met and married my wife, and have an 8 mo baby. ;) Though I didn't own the Quest van, and having not been much in the know since it was never driven by me for the last 2-3 years, I believe the van was still running but continued to have some sort of trouble with the engine/mounts, but my dad had the CEL issue (o2 sensor again or exhaust leak, not sure what it was) fixed.

What I forgot to include in my initial long write-up above is we had to have the engine mounts replaced during all that stuff around '07-08, because the van had started to 'jolt' when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. Yet last I recall driving the van after the fact, it had started to jolt during 2nd gear shifts AGAIN as it did before the new mounts, and I believe it stayed that way from then on.

My parents had trouble selling the van for any kind of substantial money with 200,000 miles on the clock (obviously), but I believe they got a couple of grand out of it eventually.

Thought this needed a 2014 continuation. Love the thread title. Being my 38th car and first minivan, having no kids, wives or dogs, I have only one good thing to say about owning a minivan...I can hold six friends, and all their beach gear, four surf boards and the body boards all at once. Or I can have relations with women in any or all of the three rows of seating! (Not that it's easy to woo them with a van) Do that in your fancy 4x4 300z! Ok.
Ps. Can we bring back the little moon and star shaped windows, it worked so well in the seventies. Jk.

I don't know about the "relations" part but it sure is easy to flatten out the floors in comparison to Odysseys and Siennas. I know the ultimate floor space is smaller than the competitors but the ease of use is what is important to me.

If I can just figure out how to enable the GPS input capability while driving it would be a great car. (they disable certain controls while driving so that lawyers can sleep at night - of course, the passager usage was never considered for the lawyers)

I would like to swap my 2012 SV model's front end with the Elgrand model they have in Japan, where our vans are sourced from. And I saw that they have Nismo suspension kits for our minivans. Not sure where in North America carries these upgrades. I checked in Courtesy Nissan's website but they don't carry them.

I see the dead list and raise you an Audi!

quinnmueller you can have relations with yourself all you want, but why bring that here to the list!!!
Besides, my wife's Audi A8L has more room than the Quest, AWD and a back seat made for relations!
How do you think we ended up with two kids!
And it wont get stuck in the sand.
Plus with the 320HP 4.2L V8 and trailer we can carry way more than a Quest!

brittcrowell, your post is hilarious, but you gotta post this in the AUDI forums located down the street from here.
(btw, I like your dog, what a cutie!) :rotfl

I bought my Quest so I can have a place to sleep when my job at the airport closes due to bad weather,
because I still have to show up so I can get paid for the day, but since we are closed, nothing is happening(no work!).

So after I report for duty, I go right back to the parking lot, fold down Greenie's back seats, get my quilt and pillow, and go to sleep. (dual a/c on summer, dual heat in winter) :dblthumb:

If I want to watch a video, I pop one in my DVD system and kill time like that too. or listen to my satellite radio if I feel like it. I'm happy with my van, and it's a pleasure to interact with all you "Questies".

I hope the morgue begins to warm up a little.

with best regards, Green T (and her handler :- )
