Hello,I have a VG30I block out of an 1986.5 Pickup and i was wondering if there are an fitment issues with bolting up an Z31 or Z32 5speed transmission? I know the starter is mounted differently on the Z31 compared to the Z32. But how does that compare to the truck block? I have read on here that the Z32 transmission is the stronger of the two, so would that be a better one to get? Oh, and will i need the driveshaft flange from car or will the (shortened) truck drive shaft bolt up?

What should be happening with the block is that it is going into a regular cab '93 nissan pickup 2 wheel drive (hopefully with some power). I hope the shifter will be in a decent location for shifting (i know it will not be in the truck location). If anyone happens to have the dimension from the center of the engine mounts to the center of the shifter that would be great (my local salvage yards don't allow "walk arounds").

Thanks for any help. I hope i did not post a question that has already been answered (i couldn't find the answer by searching). I've owned nissans for years but this is my first time modifying one. If you have any advice, it would be much appreciated.

John

The easiest swap would be using the transmissions that came with the truck, which are the early style FS5R30A. I believe all of the early style had the starter mounted near the engine block whereas the start is next to the transmission on the Z32 setup. From there you could then bolt up the same flywheel and clutch setup the truck uses.

To use the Z32 transmission there's a chance you'd have to take a hammer to the transmission tunnel to make room for the starter but getting it on is relatively easy. Pick up an NA transmission, an 89-91 Maxima flywheel, either a Maxima or 84-86 300ZX clutch kit, and a 90-96 300ZX throw out bearing and it will work out pretty well.

Driveshaft wise, if you go with the early style you could just use the a driveshaft from a 5-speed truck but if you go with the Z32 transmission you'll probably just have to go full custom on the driveshaft. As far as driveshafts lenghts go... I'm not too sure on the truck as I've not seen the measurements nor have had a chance to measure one. Its pretty easy though. If you decide to go with a custom shaft you can measure from the transmission outlet to the differential flange and a driveshaft shop could throw one together for you. They can also give you the exact point to measure from each spot.

Wow! Thanks for all the info. A list of parts needed with years and makes is more than i could have ever hoped for!

One thing that is unclear to me, is the parts list for a NA Z31 or a NA Z32 transmission?

I have the original truck transmission, but the previous owner messed it up and it is going to need a complete rebuild to be usable.

Thanks again!

The parts list in the second paragraph is for the Z32 transmission.

The later Z31 turbo transmission is the same as the truck transmission as far as I know. For other Z31 transmissions you can use the associated Z31 parts for that transmission (flywheel, clutch, etc.) The early turbo and non-turbo transmissions both used a 240 mm clutch/flywheel setup while the later turbo transmission used a 250 mm setup, which is what the trucks use from what I've seen.
