You may want to figure out why the car decided to start running so rich. Bad oxygen sensor? Bad MAF sensor? Bad ECU? Does the car act like it has a low rpm rev limiter? Alot of the time this indicates MAF sensor. Is there any other problems? Maybe cooling fans not working due to a coolant temp. sensor reading way low which could in turn cause the ECM the think the vehicle still needs to warm up thus it dumps gas.

it doesnt seem to run any different than it normally does. just pops, crackles, and backfires a lot.

would it be easier/cheaper to get an safc or bring the whole car somewhere? i dont need performance gains off this or anything cuz the motors comin out this winter, i just want it runnin right.

If it's not running right, safc will be a bandaid (and I'd highly recommend against, anyway).

Check for ecu codes, since it's a free check. A lot of problems with running rich stem from bad coolant temp sensors or oxygen sensors.

hmm i believe i'm running rich too because it backfires when i slow down...plus i'm getting like 20 mpg. seemed to have started happening when i installed my 3" exhaust...any problem it could be that or i just didn't hear the backfire w/ the stock exhaust but it was still there?

prob. get a new o2 sensor this summer.

Check out the FSM online and it will tell you how to check codes AND diagnose any problem with your engine. I read through the FSM when I'm bored lol...it's a great way to learn about your car.
