Sorry, incorrect- there are "pre-cats" at the exhaust headers to help with cold start emissions, and then the "real" catalytic converters that clean the air during normal vehicle operation......I am quite sure the EPA would disagree with your comment" your OK caug"......even after they fine you the $$10,000 plus for violating a frederal law.....pretty stupid to come on a internet forum and announce you broke federal law when a simple 2 minute search revealed his name, place of employment{ an oriental carpet dealer} and town and phone number- all it takes is one EPA employee to see post and open an investigation, or some environmentalist here to turn you in......
Actually, you're incorrect a bit too. the precats are there for catalyst monitoring. The actually do less than you claim as far as reducing bad ju-ju coming from the tailpipe. Oxygen sensors(narrow bands) generate a Sin wave of voltage, with a 1v amplitutde that usually center between .45 and .55v. The catalyst is supposed to reduce the frequency of this wave by 3, I.E. 3peaks per engine monitoring 02 for every 1 cat monitoring 02. Some cars monitor the main catalyst, some cars monitor precats. Generally cheaper cars monitor main catalysts because of the cost of manufacturing precats.
Now I'm all for cars polluting less. but you have to understand how far technology has come. Catalysts were designed for vehicles without EGR, without fuel injection and sans all modern emissions BS, nowadays all these cars have all of those things. Emissions has gotten so crazy that most CAN cars now have a pump to pump air into the gas tank, and a sensor mounted elsewhere on the gastank to check for Evaporative leaks of the tank and vent lines. Remove a catalyst from these modern cars and its still 50x cleaner than an '81 LTD 302 with a cat. I think you should shake your fist at jimmy joe bob down the street with the restored '68 Camaro without cats, You can straight pipe 20+ Y34's and they'd still pollute less than that camaro. Good luck with that though, since he's probably got suspenders, and can sit on you while drinking naty light.
Personally, I have 5 cars i regularly drive, two of them have emissions systems intact, one has no egr due to being a japanese powerplant(cars over there can pollute, its OK there!), one has no cat but has megasquirt and is tuned pretty well that it'll pass a sniffer test without it, and the other is just a lost cause, with no cat, but i drive it about 2000 miles a year.
Go to any car forum, tons of people have no cats, no exhaust, carbed cars that were EFI. Truth be told your efforts to make this world cleaner have not been in vain, you've allowed at least 20 of us to remove the cats from our cars without any significant change Lighten up a bit, its not like he peed on your front door.
