I have been changing every thing on the q for new and i changed the transmission fluid to amsoil and now i have hard shifts and the rpms freak out. Has any one else had this happen with amsoil or is there something else it could be that im over looking?

i'd be careful about using an aftermarket brand transmission fluid, i had my transmission flushed but i went to a nissan dealership and got the 12 quarts of the nissan matic D fluid. did some reasearch and had my mechanic do a little digging too, from what ive found out nissan trannys, well atleast the one in the R50 is very touchy, all the seals and components are made specifically to run with and work with what ever chemicals and additives are in nissan's "matic D" fluid. other brands will dry out the seals i guess and require every seal and gasket in the transmission to be replaced. i wasnt taking chances, i spent the rediculous amount of money at the dealership, id rather spend dealership prices rather than the price of a transmission rebuild or replacement. how ever T-case and both diffs simply require standard gear oil, diffs are a 75-90 weight i believe, and t-case may be the same, not 100% sure so double check, but the transmission does need that nissan Matic D fluid.

anyone have any experience with running royal purple in the R50's? i use mobile1 full synthetic now and was thinking of switching to royal purple, its supposed to be "that" much better, just wanted to know if anyone has any experience with it.

I've done a simple drain and refill on my trans every 20K miles for as long as I've had it. 4qts 14oz on the dot each time. Always used "Nissan Matic D." Never had the slightest issue.

According to the service manual, the transfer case came from the factory with that same "Nissan Matic D" fluid. I don't think that gear oil will hurt it though. Someone here brought up the issue that if a seal goes bad in the transfer case, if you're using gear oil, it could contaminate the ATF in the trans. If you use the trans fluid, you'll have less chance of damage if a seal failure should occur. I used the "Nissan Matic D" fluid in my transfer case last time I changed it and everythings all good.

The differentials, front and rear, use gear oil. I use Mobil 1 75W-90.

8 years old and my truck runs as good as it did when it was new.

I have no idea if Amsoil is an appropriate substitute for Matic D.

I would attempt to contact Amsoil to make sure that they recommend it.

Holy trans oil Batman. Isn't this a bit of overkill?I really can't see the need or benefit of replacing trans oil every 20K.I do believe in regular maintenance, but this seems a little bit of a waste of money. Oh well.Having said that, I have to agree that it's best to stick with Nissan oil on this one.$.02

Check out this thread: Fluids and Filters A lot of members don't use the genuine matic D fluid. And please add to the thread if you haven't already.

Any updates ssmokeyy? Everything I have ever read about Amsoil has been positive but I have Never used it personally. I replaced transfer (as well as front/rear diffs) with Mobil 1 synthetic and havent had any adverse issues. Was considering doing the transmission with Mobil 1 as well but not sure now. So many people claim synthetic for everything, I am on the fence now. Re: Royal Purple, only hear positive comments about it also. Running it in my Ex, it is harder to find and pretty pricey. Dealer wants $190 to flush and fill the transmission...... Ouch

There are a few reasons I do it every 20K miles.

1) I only do a drain and refill, so I'm really only changing about 1/3 of the fluid per service. Evan after 60K miles and three servicings, there is still some of the original fluid in there.

2) I do it myself and it only costs me about $30 and 1/2 hour of my time.

3) I drive my truck about 10K miles a year, so really, I only service my truck's trans fluid every 2 years.

4) If I see a marked change in the condition of my fluid, I could possibly get it in for repairs before the trans is completely shot.

5) I intend on keeping my truck a long time and I want to make sure it lasts.

Thanks for the clarification. Seeing as how you drive it so little, I can understand why you do it.I was assuming you were changing the fluid every couple of months, not years.By the way, how many miles are on it? must be pretty low.
