My car (an 06 M35x) has this insanely annoying rattle/ping/metallic vibration that occurs around 2700 to 3000 RPM, when I'm accelerating, especially when I "punch it". I also noticed that it doesn't do it if the engine/exhaust is still cold, and that it is the worst when I'm driving hard. (Needless to say it is extremely embarrassing when driving with friends)After reading this thread. zerothread?id=220421I have concluding that it must be my Y-pipe.

So what should I replace the Y-pipe with? The one that's on the car is factory. Are there any good after market options? I did find this thread. zerothread?id=411933Does anyone know if those pipes are any good?

As long as you are M35 and not M35X then any hi-flo cat option/y-pipe for a G35/350Z will bolt up to your car.

Just noticed you are an M35X - it's a roll of the dice if they'd work....gey up under your car and snap a few pics and post em up - see if they match the ones in that thread.

Those pipes are selling for ~50 bucks...seems like a hoax. If you go to their ebay store, they sell stainless headers for $60. That is just too good to be true. I would want someone else to be the guinea pig with them first. For all you know, they used 1/1000" (exaggerating, sure, but you get the point ) steel piping. Thin piping wouldn't last and be excessively loud and hot.

True - ebay has some "el - cheapo" versions. There are other higher quality alternatives.

iPencil is your car not under warranty?

Ive delt with this problem since I first got the car. Ive mentioned it to my dealer twice, but they were never able to replicate it. Im taking the car in imminently, and the rattle has gotten considerably worse, and more easily repeatable, so its going to be a showdown between me and the service manager.

No, it's got 79000 miles on. Actually it had 64000 on when I got it a year ago, so it would have been out of warranty then already.

If your going to snap pictures of the pipe from under the car you might as well confirm that the problem is the pipe itself. If all 4 wheels are off the ground have someone go into the car and put it in drive with his left foot on the brakes and right foot giving it some gas. This will put a load on the engine and see if you can duplicate the problem. When under the car be careful as there are many moving parts and the exhaust components can be very hot. Just a little advise so you dont waste your money on something that didnt fix the problem.

so, can anyone confirm which y-pipe fits the m35x, without modding? ive done tons of research, all i can find is some speculation that the y for the 03-08 350z or g35 with the HR "Might" fit. What about the y on the FX35/45 AWD? the y on my M is completely shot, i have the fuji just sitting in the garage till i can figure out which y to get. looking forward to hearing from you guys

thanks

UPDATE: CONFIRMED. none of the Megan racing Y-Pipes will fit on an M35x. straight from the source.

"Greetings CJ,

We do not have a Y-pipe that is fits your AWD application. Please check your local laws and regulations regarding emissions legalities. It is definitely illegal in the state of California to remove a functioning catalytic converter.

Thank You,

The only Y-pipe that I know will fit for the x is the FX35/45 AWD Y-pipe. All regular 350z and G35 Y-pipes will NOT fit your car. I am not certain about HR Y-Pipe. I can look next time I do an oil change on my g37. The RWD Y pipe will not fit your X since the "V" section will get in the way of your drive train. Y pipes made for the FX35/45 AWD have longer "V" section to go around the drive train for AWD.

If you need after market, I have Kakumei on my FX35. Mine is the RWD version but they also make the AWD version. It has held up for 6 years now so I think the quality is definitely there

Looks like the design is correct for AWD fitment.

Have an exhaust shop make it fit. You can get all sorts of custom work done, even 100% made to your specs. Often for the same price or cheaper than the name brand bolt on.

Not necessary true - parts/pipes are cheap but labor is expensive. So pick wisely. Oh cheap labor = not so good product.

ok for 380+ shipping i think themegan piece is a wiser/cheaper solution. even if it doesn't fit, you can have midas fitted for you and still come out on top. just my 2cents

I agree cruz! Id rather go with the megan, but im planning on doing this work in the driveway on ramps. What would i do if the megan doesnt fit, bring both y pipes to an exhaust shop an tell them to do the necessary mods?

I believe that you are using an FX35 y-pipe on your M, however the Y-pipe on the M35 Sport/Base is completely different than the M35x. that is where I'm deterred from purchasing an fx35 y. i plan on swapping the Y, Mids, and mufflers in my driveway on ramps, hoping to get it all done in one day. im worried that once i have everything off and start to put in my new exhaust to find that my brand new y (kakumei, megan, etc..) just plain doesn't fit, bringing both Y's to an exhaust shop and having them do modifications without being near the car to check if it will even fit before i bring it home also worries me. still looking forward to hearing from you guys.

so you can and of course the importance thing is fitment. there's a user here jdmlove who bought the wrong y pipe but then have an exhaust shop cut the neck of the old pipe and weld it on to the new one. the only difference is that neck, see above pic for reference.

so here's my 2cents again. check with the exhaust shop around you, midas or whatever/whoever you trust. get a quote for the job. before you place the order, ask to see actual picture of the megan fx35 pipe.then you can decide whether to press forward or not.

also, before you can take the pipe off you must undo a U bracket that's holding the pipe to the frame; depending here you are, those nuts are a b**** to take off due to snow and salt as i'm experiencing up here in north east.

good luck and report back.
