Windows DEP is closing Media Player any time I try to play a DVD. It's starting to really, really infuriate me. I've made an exception for media player in the DEP controls. The MOST infuriating thing is that the problem KEEPS COMING BACK. If I manage to make DVDs play, it won't last forever. Next time I restart my computer they might stop working again. The DEP exception is still in place...it just isn't working.

I'm sick of having to work AROUND this crap. Is anyone aware of a PERMANENT solution?

I'm pretty damn irritated that there's no "just turn this stupid s*** OFF" button for DEP. Only on, more on, or exceptions for certain programs. Even more ridiculous, Windows simply won't let you apply exceptions to certain programs. Utterly unbelievable.

I never had problems with viruses before Vista. I sure as hell don't need DEP "protecting" me from DVDs now.

In the meantime, I'm using VLC media player. I friggin' HATE VLC media player, though, and I really really do not want to make it my permanent solution.

Try this:

If dep keeps closing video files in windows media player then you can disable it by the following method : right click on my computer > Properties > System Properties > Advanced tab > Performance > Settings > Performance Options > Data Execution Prevention > there are two check radio button select one > Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only is selected.Reply With Quote

Yeah, I tried that already. Makes no difference.

I found an old PowerDVD disc in my stack-O-CDs and installed that. VLC and WMP are both unnecessary now, and PowerDVD appears to work fine.

I'd still like to fix the problem, but at least it's not really an issue now. I'm hoping when I install Windows 7 sometime this week it'll fix the problem.

Try reinstalling Windows media player and check all the codecs. But Windows 7 "SHOULD" fix it if its a clean install, Upgrade I think would be the same as reinstalling windows media player.

I'm not planning to do a clean install for windows 7 at first. In a month or so I'm going to buy a 32gb solid state drive JUST for windows and I'll do a clean install on that drive. Vista is annoyingly installed on a partition right now (I have one 1TB hard drive partitioned into two 500mb chunks) and I'm not sure how I want to deal with the partition once I've got Winblows on a 2nd drive.

I don't know why I didn't think of reinstalling windows media player already. I'll have to give that a try. PowerDVD is STILL not quite the solution I'd like as it refuses to remember which monitor it was last used on. I like watching DVDs on my 2nd monitor while playing games or working, and PowerDVD is determined to return to the main monitor every time it's run. Media Player stays where I put it, which is much more convenient.
