sr20 starter problem

this may have been covered before but i can't find any topics with the same problem just lurking around so i made an account finally.

so heres the problem, my starter went out on me after about 1 year after i finished my sr20det swap. so i ordered a new one and installed it and it worked fine for about 4 days and today at work the car wouldn't start. after the second time i tried to start the car the starter just started spinning freely without even turning the key. so i disconnected the battery so i could check all the wiring and everything looked fine so i connected the battery again and it just started spinning as soon as i connected the battery. so i tried hitting it with a rubber mallet thinking maybe it was stuck or something and nothing happened still just spins freely.

does anyone know what could be wrong, did i mess up the wiring, does the starter have another ground besides the little black connector on the starter?

oh and if it helps i did a rear mounted battery in the hatch and just ran a new power wire along with the hold power wire on the starter

does it engage the flywheel or just spin without engaging? if it spins without sticking out then that is a polarity issue.

no it doesn't engage just sits there and spins as soon as the battery cable is connected

you have two bolts on the solenoid which one is your positive wire hooked two? the shinny bolt should be your power wire if you hook power to the other bolt the starter just spins

both of the bolts were a brass color, one of the bolts has a wire coming from the solenoid and the other bolt had nothing so i hooked to that one

is that the starter taht you run a mishimoto?

if the hot wire hits the second solenoid wire that usually will cause it to spin freely -- you need to run through all the ignition and test wires with a Volta meter.

just thought I would bump this thread and share my experience. There is a fella that makes SR starters in Europe and goes by the ebay signature of electrostart2006. He makes and refurbishes starters for europe luxo cars like Aston martin. He also does Nissan factory starters for sr and its replacement. They run like 200 - 230 bucks but they are about the best starter I have seen for our cars plus they sound really cool when they turn over. Kinda airy and fast unlike the factory Hitachi motors which sound scratchy and slow. They use a Mitsubishi motor instead of an Hitachi motor and come with a 12 month warranty. Better than the made in China stuff that Isis and Mishimoto come up with and only 20-60 bucks more. Just thought I would share and give them some props -- it is a really cool starter smaller, faster and more powerful than the Hitachi unit -- Nice overall unit and better than ISIS/ MIshi
