  89 Hardbody Auto Trans. Fluid?

Anyone know what fluid is used in these trucks? Its auto with overdrive. The resto is moving right along and I want to change the fluid before driving it much.

Should I use only Nissan fluid or will aftermarket fluid suffice? Some cars are finicky and only like the manufactures product where others don't make a difference at all.

I'm replacing the filter and going to have the T-Tech total fluid replacement done. The T-Tech uses the transmissions pump to push the old fluid out while filling with new fluid.

All opinions welcome, Thanks

All I know is that it's a Jatco, which is a Nissan spinoff company. Fortunately, and I thank God for this, most D21's were manual shift, (it's likely the deciding factor in my ownership). But maybe your model of transmission, which is an RL4R01A, is in other vehicles as well, and you can learn more about what you've got by asking those people, too, or
If I had one of these, I would try to learn all I could. Maybe I could even find (or make) a shift kit...

Thanks man, the only info I've found on the auto trans fluid is on newer trucks and they are dextron 2. The truck will be my sons in about a year and a half and he desperately wants a 5 speed. We will do a 5 speed swap after I'm confident with his driving skills.

My 2002 Xterra uses Dexron III. Only the 2004+ Titan and 2005+ compacts require the OEM fluids. You should be fine running Dexron III in your auto.
