'97 Pathfinder XE 5spd, 100k, ridiculous belt screeching noise sound, doesn't go away regardless of hot/cold exposure...minutes to hours does not matter. Tried belt dressing and nothing! If I hold running water on the belts it is new car quiet, which leads me to believe that they are slipping on the pulleys, bad tensioners/pulleys? Clutch fan is shot, doesn't lock up, can hold it with my hand while idling, would this cause the noise? About to take a 12 gauge to it, a little help here please...

if there is a glaze on you belts that means there due to be replaced, when was the last time they were replaced? paying 50-60 dollars for new belts is better than paying 200 dollars that you didn't have to.

True, true, but I haven't bought anything for it yet. The belts appear to be in good shape, my brother (who is a GM mechanic, which may be part of the problem) and I were messing with it yesterday. Interestingly enough, this morning, I fired her up and now I'm getting a faint whistle noise like a defective super charger.lol I'm almost certain that there is slippage, can come up with anything else. Thanks for the input bro.

I had loud belt squealing I conditioned them and they stopped but I also have that defective super charger wine but I think its a squeaky pulley. Just try using some sort of lub spray on the pulleys it should go away, I did it while the truck was running and the sound disappeared as I sprayed.

Good luck

I know how annoying this noise can be

Thank you. I'ts at tolerable levels now, I almost thought waterpump, but they generally hum, not squeel, but who knows the condition of the bearings and what variety of pitches they can make, however, she ain't leaking, nor is there any play. I'm defintely going to have to agree with you on the pulleys as being suspect. Thanks again!

Same noises here. Replaced easiest belt and pulley. Adjusted/Readjusted other belts. Noise somewhat better but still sounds like what you described. Have the other pulley ready to go and other 2 belts. Running out of time though, may have to break down and bring it to dealer or independent shop. Finding a decent independent shop isnt the easiest thing anymore.
