Brake Light Problems

1997 Nissan SE 4x4 5-speed

With my headlights turned off I have no brake lights.

If I turn headlights on, my brake lights are stuck on.

Checked fuse, its good, also changed brake light switch. Still having same issues

I'm going to try and trace the wires tomorrow for a short.

Turn Signals, reverse lights, hazards all work fine.

Any other suggestions?

First of all - Welcome to NICO!

Check your brake light bulbs and sockets. Sometimes the lead tips on the bulb bases will overheat and melt together. That would explain your brake lights coming on when you turn the park lights on (backfeeding through the bulbs).

I would check your fuses again once you cure the backfeeding issue. Also check any wiring harneses for a trailer light harness. There could be a short there too.

I replaced all the bulbs and looked over the sockets they look perfect. All fuses are good.

No wires have been spliced into for a trailer hook up or anything. No shorts that I could see.

May be the switch shorting out and jumping lights, I had that on a mazda once. Time to pull the column cover off and check the thing out with a meter. Junk yard is best bet for cheap replacement if it is bad.

I got a new switch, I'm gonna call around and see who can take a look at it for me. I don't got meter to test it

thats most probably a case of short circuit in wiring. this happens when the connectivity is in mess and better get it check with the help of charge detector else you may have to go for bulb replacements on short
