I've been doing a lot of research on oil filters lately and found that some oil filters should be avoided. A good quality oil filter will have metal end caps and a desent anti-drain back valve. The ones with cardboard end caps is pretty much a no no. If the cardboard is soaked in oil for a while it will pretty much collaspe and the filter would be useless.

Fram is one of those companies whos end caps are made up of cardboard and then glued in placed. Others out there such as STP and Pennzoil oil filters is pretty much the same as Fram. One thing that surprised me was the Nissan OEM filters that the dealer puts on when you go in for a oil change has cardboard end caps also. I would stay away from filters with cardboard end caps.

The best oil filter out I think is the Amsoil oil filter. Its probably the most expensive oil filter on the market right now. No one will ever buy one because its just too expensive when theres other high quality filters out there such as Mobil 1 and K&N.

For my personal use I stick with Mobil 1 or K&N filters, they are pretty much made the same. Yes its pricey and all but at least it gives me a peace of mind that they won't fail.

I recently read good reviews about Purolator PureOne filters being one of the best also so I decided to put one on during a oil change. The next morning when I started the car I noticed the engine being a little noisey probably from the valvetrain. Very loud ticking sounds, louder than the fuel injectors. When I do cold starts I like to have the hood open and listen for any ususal noise. That's just me. Before the purolator filter I had on a Bosch filter and it didn't make any valvetrain noise during coldstart. So yeah, sometimes if you hear noise from the valvetrain during start ups its probably the oil filter you are using.

So what kind of oil filters do you guys use?

7500 miles?????????

jeez man, you must really hate your car!

to the OP, i use 6 quarts of Mobil 1 full synthetic and Mobil 1 oil filter (part number M1-110) every 2800 miles.

i know it's overkill but i love my car and i make sure she gets the best always and as much as possible!

He doesn't hate his car...he's just spending wisely.

Mobil 1 every 2800 IMHO is way overkill unless you are flogging the crap out of your car daily. (In which case you wouldn't really love your car)

I had a BMW 5 series and the oil change interval on it is 15,000 with Castrol Syntec.

My 2005 Acura TL's oil change light warning comes on after about 7500 and Acura just recommends regular dino oil. According to the manual the computer counts engine revolutions and bases the service interval on that.

I'll probably get flack for this, but i think the whole 3000 mile thing was invented by quicklube places simply to double their business.

Theres a guy on here who sends his oil off to be tested at each change. I actually got a kit from the company but have not sent in any oil yet. Anyway he is changing regular dino oil every 15,000 in his car....gets the oil tested and its good as new after 15K.

i change my oil when it starts to turn a dark dark brown.

i agree on the whole "have to change oil every 3000k mile" hype.

i just change it when i feel the engine start to lag or if i floor it too often. nothing worng with flooring now and then; that's one of the reasons i bought this car to being with.

Hey we agree on somthin! I knew there was common ground between us - lol

I'm switching to the EAO13 filter and the 5-30HDD Amsoil and prepping for extended drain intervals. the oil is rated for 25,000mi with regular duty and I think 15,000 severe duty and the same for the filter.

I'm setting up because I put too many miles on my car and find myself changing the oil with expensive oil way too frequently. $6.99per qt I might as well spend a few more $$ and get the best Amsoil out there.

Only reason I was waiting is because I wanted to check on the oil consumption of the engine - which there is none, and also verify how clean the internal engine was. Using frequent oil changes to try and flush the engine before switching over to th "good" stuff.

I was this "_" close to getting a dual remote bypass setup but it'd be too expensive for what I use the vehicle for.

Ken check your "Intake air temps - data log picture" thread. You might be surprised. I change every 7500 miles because the Infiniti drive train warranty calls for 7500 OCI. Once I pass 70,000 miles I will go to 15,000 mile OCI

Ha...forgot about that thread, just replied to it....

Have you done extended OCI's on any other cars? Just curious on how it's gone for you. My buddy is a dealer and has all that stuff on his duramax....I've even seen him go more than 25k mi because his OA looked great - gotta love the dual remote bypass. His oil would look brand new even well after the 20k mi mark where the oil in my dodge looked like poo in just a few thou

I have used the regular FRAM oil filters on several new cars that I bought and had no problems. One car I changed the oil & filter every 3k and put 240k miles on it before I sold to a friend who is still driving it with no problems. The second vehicle I bought new and followed the same schedule and I sold that one with 211k. Neither car burned any oil - you put in 5qts and 3K miles later you got 5qts out.

I hope our M can make it 200K. It seems to be burning oil at 35K(24oz per 3K), I hope this is normal. I have never owned a car that consumed any significant amount of oil(More than 5oz). Are these M35 engines that loose?
