What kind of car do you have?

I am assuming you are asking about a Rogue.

There should be an access panel on the inside of the rear hatch that you remove to access a manual latch release.

Yep, all you have to do is read that section in the owners manual, it'll show you exactly where the latch is located. If it were me, I'd be taking it directly to the dealer and not worrying about the latch location, get them to fix that immediately.

When I first got my Rogue, I didn't realize you had to 'lift up' while depressing the release button. Otherwise the hatch would stay closed.

Also, silly question but were the doors fully unlocked? ie. double press of the unlock button on the remote?

problem resolved.there was a blanket in the trunk and was covering the latch when the truck was closed. When pressing the button to release the hatch you could hear the mechanism unlock but the truck wouldn't release because the material jambed in the latch mechanism preventing the secondary latch from releasing. After repeated well timed unlock and pull attempts it eventually opened.
