i can hear the chain hit the top plate near the cams, untill it warms up, would it hurt if i took the valve cover off and took that plate off for this winter?

I plan on putting a new timing chain and stuff in this winter but I need to get the next few events out of the way first. would it be safe? I've heard of people doing it before just want to double check.
