Assuming back-up bulbs are good, with gear in Reverse (Ignition ON), there should be 12VDC on the G/W (green with white stripe) wire going to the combination/back-up lamp assembly. This voltage is thru the Gear Position Switch located on the transmission side.

Aaaah, here we go, the nissan maxima from 95-98 was not released with the manual transmission to my knowledge (actually any year after 95 for that matter). Usually it is swapped in from a altima and everything mates up perfectly. Mine, a 95, had the same issue. The harness from the trans position switch/sensor, which tells the ecu and the lights to change accordingly, does not perfectly mate into the automatic plug. What you need to do is put the trans in reverse and power the main wire to the trans position switch/sensor and test for continuity out of the other prongs. That output is the one you wire to the said green/white wire going to the reverse lights. or you can do what i did and jump a wire on a switch to it and just remember to turn it off when you move... It's kinda illegal to have it on while you're moving forward. LOL Hopefully this helps, i'm gonna replace the switch also but i broke it draining the trans and just put a freeze plug in it. When i do it if you want i can send you more info.... may not be till 2010 though.

1995-1999........The GXE and SE came with a 5-speed manual transmission. An electronically controlled 4-speed automatic was optional on those models and standard on the GLE. Antilock brakes were optional on all except the 5-speed GXE.

2000-2003......mated to a five-speed manual in the base GXE and sporty SE models or a four-speed automatic in the upmarket GLE

2004-2008..... A six-speed manual is still standard on some models.

Yeah, I'd check the gearshift position sensor.

Wait.......what?

The Maxima most definitely came with a manual through all those years. From its introduction as a separate model all the way up through 2007, without interruption, the Maxima always offered a manual transmission option. It wasn't until 2007 when the CVT became the sole option that the manual disappeared.

No MOD...No. He's correct, the auto was standard after 95 and the optional transmission was a dynamic hydro drive for silent running. It was originally designed just for Spec Ops use, but it was leaked to the public

Uhhhh, no.

The Maxima has been available with a manual transmission EVERY year from 1995 to 2007.

Also, there's no need to ghetto-rig the reverse lights. 240sx owners have been retrofitting manuals into automatic cars for YEARS.

So what you're saying is that the 98 Maxima that I drove for 4 years was a figment of my imagination? The clutch I replaced was actually a torque converter? Hmm. S'pose I should go see a shrink then...
