I have a 2005 pathfinder 4.0 liter, 50,000 miles on the automatic transmission. I change the once in spring (april) and once in the fall (October) because most of the driving is less than 5 miles from a cold start which in Michigan can be 10F. My oil is Mobil 1, 5 - 30w.

Anyway, I was attempting to change the transmission fluid but quickly discovered that the spout was covered. I called the dealer and they mentioned that these are sealed units and that only the dealer can swap the fluid. The cost is $250.

I'm thinking what the heck.

Can someone provide me with the truth?

Thanks,

Ken

Well the Service Manual for the '05 Pathfinder doesn't list any special steps to change the ATF, it simply says to pull out the drain plug to drain and then fill it. When you say the spout is covered, what do you mean? Can you take a picture? This sounds more like a dealership trying to take advantage of you.

Also, I recommend obtaining a copy of the factory service manual for your vehicle. You can see all of the service manuals for your '05 at the following address. To change the ATF, you want to reference the document 'MA.pdf' and start on page MA-24.

Well, upon closer look, it is a cap without a loop to stick your finger thru, also, there is a screw that locks the cap into place. Once you remove the screw and remove the cap, the dipstick is attached. I never experienced this before....

Sorry for the false alarm...

So Wizeguy, are you going with Nissan J-Matic or will you use Mobil 1?

This is my intended process for ATF change:

Drain.Transfer drained ATF to empty oil containers so I can measure what came out.Refill with same amount, measure dipstick level, add whatever I need to.I think I'll need 7 Quarts.I don't think I'll remove the fluid in the cooler.I'm leaning towards J-Matic... However, everything else I use is Mobil 1.

What are your thoughts?

I also clamped my exhaust heat shields and realized that all of the rattling and squeaking disappeared for about $10 in hose clamps. The stock clamps rusted off.

I e-mailed my friend who owns a trans shop in Roseville and this is what he said......

Quote »Hey Sal,Your transmission is a RE5R05A Nissan/Mazda transmission, and according to my books the only engine available was a 4.0L. I assume its 4x4. It does have a removable pan on the bottom and a replaceable filter. My book shows 7 different filters and does not break it down from year or model vehicle. Searching the fluid type, it comes up with 2 different types of fluid. I may need to look it up by VIN, or just check your service manual for fluid specifications. As far as fluid goes, espically for new vehicles, I would suggest amsoil synthetic, as long as it meets the specifications required. Labor, to remove the pan, clean and re seal it, and replace the filter runs 85.00, fluid runs 10.60 for amsoil per quart (guessing yours will take approx 6) and filter & pan gasket would run73300f fibre gasket= 11.32guessing on the filter73010b filter= 24.15for a total of 131.07 plus mich sales tax [/quote]
