  303 british

I'm looking for a rifle.

I was looking at a Marlin 336w in 30-30 for $289 new. This seems like a decent price as buds lists it for $350.

But a relative has a Enfield 303 British. He wants $90 for it. I haven't seen the condition, but it's shootable, and shoots straight.

What do you guys think?

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms . . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes . . . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." Cesare Beccaria, 1767 (Later quoted by Thomas Jefferson)

find out which series it is.

I'm not an Enfield expert, but some are very nice rifles.

That's a nice looking rifle.

Picked it up last night. It is in ~90% condition.

This thing is sexy. My uncle said it kicks harder then his 30-06. But, it has absolutely no recoil pad.

I'll be shooting it today.

It has two peep sites on a flip up. One is zeroed at 400 yards, the other at 100 yards.

I'm trying to figure this thing out still. It has like a half cocked position safety that disengages the trigger completely(makes it floppy). It also has a bolt closed locking safety flip switch.

This thing is sexy, I'm excited because I was going to purchase a Marlin 336w in 30-30 for $280 new. Great price, but can't beat this thing

hope it's a good shooter.

the Marlin 336W however is a great little rifle.

I should've kept mine.

Only problem with 303 brit Enfields is that the bolts lock up in the rear. What that does to the brass is stretches the heck out of it so you might only get 1 to 3 reloads out of a single piece of brass. Most modern rifles are front locking lugs which keeps brass stretch to a min.

I would have bought that Enfield for 90 bux as well, great deal!

Alright, it is a Number 1 Mark 4*. It was made by Savage in 1941 for Britain.

It shoots true. We were popping soda cans at 100 yards.

It kicks like a 7mm Remington Magnum.

The stock has been cut, the barrel band removed, and the top wood piece taken off. None of these things affected accuracy so they're fine by me as I like the looks more.

The finish on the cut stock looks professional.

I'll get pictures when I get a chance.

Well, it's official. Florida, specifically hillsborough county, gun dealers like to rape people.

I go in and they wanted $36.99 for a box of remington 180g! I paid $22 in Southern wisconsin(Gander mountain, was priced at $29, but he dropped $7 without blinking when I asked), and $17(shelf price) in northern wisconsin, Cabela's in Indiana had 303 listed at $17.99, but was out of stock

I talked to a few guys and they just blew it off like this was no big deal.

Another reference point, Marlin 336c they wanted $599! Northern Wisconsin this same gun new was $280.

Their response when prompted on the prices, "the demand is really high". That's bulls***. 30-30s are always in stock, and it's not the guns that are in the biggest demand, it's the ammunition.

I will note that this dealer likes to sell used guns for about the price that Walmart would sell it new.

So, i'll only be buying from Walmart for 9mm and 22LR. I'll have to order in bulk online for 303.

Luckily I can get 250 rounds for $125. It probably wont be as consistant, but I can't justify the insane prices.

What are prices on oddball ammunition in your area?

Nope. Any gun.

Ok, ok, you got me. If I paid $90 for a Moist-Nugget, I'd feel like an idiot.

s***...90 bucks is a fair price for one in good shape now...they're starting to dry up.

if you've ever messed with a Turk Mauser, you'd know what I'm talking about.

Turkish Mauser + .308 Match Barrel for Large Ring Mauser + Couple Hours = Sub-MOA on a budget.

The only worthwhile thing on a Turkish Mauser is the action. The rest is junk.

The British .303 round is ancient tapered wall junk. I don't much care for it, but I'd love to snag a good condition war era Enfield.

I <3 Enfields...got a nice solid feel.

I wanna get a 1903 as well....it's hard to beat the cool factor of the old Military bolt guns.

you've almost given me a reason to spend 60 bucks on one...
