Every alternator needs external voltage to run the internal electromagnet until the rpms exceed the threshold and to power the regulator circuitry. Modulating the small field current to stablize output voltage.

When an alternator draws more than 80 milliamperes with engine off, the alternator is defective and should be rebuilt or replaced. When running a 110 ampere alternator may draw ~~ 3 amperes in field current.

The Nissan alternator is just like every other alternator built and in use for the past 50 years................nothing exotic here except some improvements in efficiency.

Hope I'm being clear in that not understanding a Nissan alternator is NOT UNDERSTANDING ANY ALTERNATORS.

Important that one understands how a 3 ampere field current gets multiplied by the driving rpm [4 HP drag] to create 110 ampers of AC current which get rectified by 3 diodes to add up to 110 amperes of DC current.

I would recommend a few course in automotive electronic technology as all elctric cars are right around the corner as are really big electic motors and alternators driven from $10,000 battery packs.

A VOM, an oscilloscope, plus 400+ volt rubber gloves will become everyday tools of the trade!
