  J30 Timing Belt- 1996

Greetings all;

Well, after resolving the tranny overflow issue, I found out that the PO didn't have the timing belt done at 60k miles. Just called a dealer and he said that "she neglected to have it done". THe manual says it's due at 105k, similar to that of the Nissan Quest. I knows its an interference engine, but has anyone done a timing belt themselves? TIA!!!!

I have .

Followed this how too.
Took my time over a weekend. Not hard , Just time consuming.

http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=198122

And Please if you do it yourself Use OEM parts and when done turn the engine over via the crankshaft pulley using a breaker bar to make sure its timed properly.
How many miles on your J now ?

The timing belt doesn't have to be done at 60,000 miles. Read your owners manual. First scheduled change is at 105,000 miles.

If you decide to replace the timing belt, the following should also be replaced:
Water pump
Auto-tensioner
Accessory belts
Water bypass hoses
Crank sprocket front plate
Intake sprocket VTC springs
Intake sprocket o-rings

Things you can replace ONLY IF YOU ARE VERY MECHNICALLY INCLINED:
5 front oil seals (2 intake, 2 exhaust, 1 crank)
It is VERY EASY to damage the camshafts/crank shafts when replacing the oils seals.

For those who haven't done the T-Belt replacement
We are mentioning all these other parts because you have to dig into the front of the engine to replace this stuff. Might as well do it all and not worry about them for 105K miles.

And I now have a backup water pump
It look's perfect but I swapped it any way.

This page shows the T-Belt kit for 94 and up.
As well as other goodies for our J's

Thanks all for the input!!!! My wife's a bit skeptical, after we paid for the insurance- man- for being 13 years old, still steep!. Anyway, called the last servicing dealer in Phoenix, he states that yes, the manual says to at 105k miles, but recommends it at 60k miles. Bear in mind he's around the corner from Sun City where wealthy retirees live. Whn I asked about the cost, without taking a breath, he says "$1100". I traded my wrenches for comouters 20 years ago and am not afraid to do it.

Anyway, nearest local dealer in Las Vegas has a $398 special for timing belts.

What's the groups feelings about this on a 61k mile car from Arizona? I know it's an interference engine and that fact alone scares me!

TIA,

Steve

At 61K you have ALOT of life left in that J !!!
Your belt is kevlar and indeed good for 105K.
But peace of mind is a good thing !!!
Mines at 180k and still runs like a top !
Just need to bite the bullet and do the suspension now.
That's a tad more than the Tbelt for sure.

If you have the tools and some time you can do the TBelt and all the other stuff.
Just take your time and follow that how too step by step.
Making sure the camshafts are in time is the big challenge. Gotta be dead on.
But they all have timing marks.

The 105k assumes a ceratin miles per year so 9-10 years is a good safe formula to add to 105k, which ever occurs earlier!

Happy Fourth to you all....went to the pic-a-part today and found a 300zx- broken timing belt. Sadd, really. SO I have an appointment with a dealer in Las Vegas the 28th- ($389 special- belt only, will add tstat and hoses if need be). Anyway, kudos to those whom have chaged their tbelt on their own. Unfortunately the missus and I went full-time and no longer have a garage.

WHile cruising through the junkyard, a thought crossed my mind- "Why are all the luxury cars using belts?" I saw Acuras, Benzs, Beemers, etc...

I know belts are quieter than chains, that's how I ended up trading my 02 Sonata in- belt was due and the NF (06-up) use chains....

Or is it a conspiracy to sepertae man and woman from their money if u buy a luxury car???

Signing off, and yes I'm sober!!!

Never had a garage.
All my work is done on a driveway in the Texas heat !!
I usually start doing engine work about 6 in the AM so i can get stuff done before it's unbearable.
Then finish up at dusk or the next morning.
103 here today.
Glad the J doesn't need any work !!

Well, wouldn't ya know it- the $389 special is for a Q4?. TB and labor- $650 and for an additional $250, they'll do the following:

Tstat, water pump, camshaft seals and warranty it all for 12 months/12k miles. Ok, the wife is pissed- "Another money pit, that's why only rich people buy these things!" "Shoulda bought a beater!"

So, looking for group input here, here's what my current budget will allow:

Tbelt, Tsat and cam seals. The thing has 62k miles and I believe I can do the water pump myself when it goes. Whatcha all thing about his plan of attack?

AFter I recoup from this, it's rotor time...lots of them on Ebay, but heard rumblings that these drilled/grooved are subject to warping. The fronts are now, but not bad...

Thanks again all!!!
Thanks again and I just introduced a co-worker to the group.

Your timing belt is the most important thing, if that thing should go, your engine is toast. Since your paying for the timing belt labor anyway, get the waterpump done too. Its all in the same area. To do the waterpump after your t-belt has been installed, you pretty much have to do a lot of labour like you where doing the t-belt again.

Stay away from ebay brake rotors. A lot of them are third world sourced crap. Get yourself a set of Nissan OEM rotors or high end aftermarket rotors. They won't warp. With the general heat of braking and the ambient heat of Arizona, your braking system is under a lot more presssure then my braking system up in Canada.

Sorry man, nope...near Las Vegas. I'm going to eat the $900 and let them do it all. I travel way too much and want this car to be trouble free for the missus. Like I said earlier, it's only got 62k miles on her, but it's been here in AZ for the last 3 and stuff dries out FAST out here...

Hello,

I have a 1993 J30 with 94,000 miles. Just bought it used. No way to tell if the previous owner ever changed the timing belt. The water pump is leaking, so I will replace the timing belt along with the water pump. I will do it myself with my mechanic-cousin's help.

My questions are:
Do I need to replace the hydraulic belt tensioner?
Do I need to replace the 3 pulleys (2 idler and 1 tensioner pulley)?

Thank You,
Edward
