In general you want to find out the condition of the car itself. Rust? paint condition (dings, dents and all) ? Accidents? Mileage? Service records? Known problems? Title in hand? Interior condition? Tire condition?, etc.If you are eMailing or calling on the phone, always ask for photos (good ones showing front, both sides, rear, interior, motor, etc) if you are not close enough for a visit.
When inspecting a used car that is does not come with a warranty, check the oil, radiator fluid, tranny fluid, headlights, tail lights, blinkers, etc. Look underneath for oil leaks, torn CV boots, and pull up the trunk padding to look for rust there. I know some people who suggest taking a magnet to validate no bondo and a mirror to look in the fenders and other areas where cars are known to rust.
