  240sx Speed Sensor tutorial

I'm not really sure which sensors are interchangeable.

Okay, here's the summary on speed sensors.
KA24E: Same speed sensor just like KA24DE, but has 2 different pinion gears. Sport Pacakage has same pinion gear as KA24DE. KA24DE pinion gear has 20 teeth(not sure if you can go by this or size of it), so be careful if you are dealing with manual tranny from KA24E and it didn't come with speed sensor. Both tranny and speed sensor gears will get messed up if you get a wrong speed sensor and plug it in.

KA24DE: s13 and s14 speed sensors are interchangeable. s13 has aluminum casing with long wire and plug attached and s14 speed sensor has plastic housing with no wires. SR20DET tranny speed sensors also have same part numbers as KA24DE s13 & s14, so you can use them for sure.

I compared s13(Chuki) and s14 speed sensors(from 96) carefully and they are basically the same. Gears look exactly the same and both have 20 teeth. I'll post a side by side picture tonight. I think clusters act differently based on where they getting the inputs from. Anyway, you better match the chassis and speed sensor like Hijacker said

From the 1991 factory service manual:

So yeah I hope this helps some else as much as it has helped me. I still need to get underneath and check out how to get the thing off but I heard that its just a bolt or screw that is relatively easy to get off. twist as you take off.

i just copy and pasted that.

rock auto and courtesy have the same part numbers for the 1990/1989 and 1991-94. both have different parts numbers for the 1995-98 vs 1989-94.

if you search through the forums though , a lot of people complain of the sensor reading double the speed so it is a bit muddy. the auto and manual always have different parts numbers.

One more question: Is it possible to re-use the speedometer pinion and retainer clip from my existing A/T? They have slightly different part numbers. It is not the end of the world, but I see no need to purchase new parts if I am able to use what I have currently. I have heard that the only difference between the A/T VSS and M/T VSS is the diameter of the sensor shaft, but I am not sure about the pinion and retainer clip.

Thanks,
Kevin
