I think almost everyone knows that your supposed to remove that upper guide if you have any 240 pre 97. That guide has been know for a fact to break and fall inside and cause damage. See how yours cracked..
If your chain is hitting the valve cover time to remove the front cover and inspect some more.

He means the 240sx's made before 1997.
And yes, the upper timing chain guide is useless, take it off.

Scotty,

I had a similar problem with my 96 Sentra. The rattling sound was the upper chain hitting the valve cover (the guide had already been removed).

I would check the oil pressure with an oil pressure guage. The chain tensioners work off of oil pressure, so if there is not enough oil pressure the chains will be loose.

Good luck,
Ryan

Check the lower timing chain guide.
And also the tensioner.

Yes you have to remove it or it will break off after some use...but!!!!......if you look at the head where that mounts to you will notice how thin any support is there....so what i did..is cut the guide part off..keeping the bottom plate (after some reshaping) for support of that area...i put it back in the head...with (locktite) as to never loosen again:)..no problems with the guide and plenty of support where it was designed to be...good luck.
