Have you looked under the hood in the area of the fan, the accessory belts and the things that they drive? And how about cleaning the battery terminals and the cable connections, though I wouldn't keep cranking the engine until I had a better idea of why things are making noises. When was the timing belt last replaced?
You might want to disconnect the battery, remove all six spark plugs and rotate the engine manually by turning the crank bolt, listening for noises. It should turn pretty freely and don't force things if you encounter a lot of resistance.
Maybe mark and pull the camshaft position sensor and watch the end that drives it to see if the camshafts are turning.
