It's difficult to help you pinpoint it without being there.

Can you have someone else drive and sit in back and check it out?

You might have some small stone or item rattling around in a storage bin? You could have a messed up gasket somewhere that the dealer needs to fix for you..

I had a similar problem in a previous car...sometimes the hardware holding the spare tire loosens up and rattles...check that stuff out to make sure it's tight.

Yeah, I think I hear the same thing. When the rear wheels go over a bump, it sounds like the hatch is loose or something. I'm going to go check the spare to make sure everything is secure in there, maybe that's the problem. Otherwise, maybe the latch on the hatch is loose/faulty?

I'm having the same problem. I believe it is the jack rattling around back there. Anyone else have this problem or a solution to it? The jack does not fit tightly in it's compartment so every time you hit a bump it rattles. I tried stuffing a towel in there and that helped a little but I'm looking for a better fix.

Could it be the license plate frame?

I hear the same sound when I go over bumps. My license plate is secure, though. I bet it's the jack or spare tire...will have to mess with it.

I just tore my trunk apart looking for a rattle. It occurred after bumps in the road and shutting the back doors. Drove me crazy! Turned out to be the Left Tail light. It was loose. I tightened the bolt under the hatch light in the access cavity and now NO NOISE. Sweet! Hope this helps.

That is great information, thanks for posting, I'll check that out. My jack was rattling around and I secured it by wrapping it in some foam wrap so it fits tighter, but I still hear quite a bit of noise. The rock hard rear suspension really jolts the crap out of everythign back there, and the last noisy item that I encountered was the rear hatch (see rear hatch noise thread). The hatch actually seems to come loose sometimes in this cold weather, but a good shot of white lithium grease seems to solve the problem, be sure not to use runny spray like WD-40 because it won't be a long term solution, and it stinks, and it will run everywhere. I'll check the taillights later and hopefully I can get this vehicle to be quiet!

Loose tow hook? There have been a couple times where my back hatch hasn't closed tightly, but the door ajar indicator stays on.

Have someone ride back there and home in on it.

That rear hatch is driving me nuts. It's -30C here and that stupid thing just will not close, I sprayed a ton of white lithium grease in there and it hasn't really solved the problem.

My concern is that you really have to slam the hell out of it to get it to close, and I don't want to damage it. Someone here mentioned that they had their service dept. make an "adjustment" and now it works fine. Is this something I should mention to my service dept. to see if they can fix it, or is everyone in cold climates experiencing this?

Is there anyone out there in cold temperatures NOT having trouble with the rear hatch latch? Is so, then I'm going to assume that my probelm is not normal. Or, if everyone is having this problem then I guess I'll just live with it until it warms up.

Re: hatch closing difficulty

This could be caused by hardening of the weatherstripping in cold weather. Since it is not very flexible, it may take much more force to compress when closing the hatch. The dealer must have simply adjusted the strike/catch on the rear hatch outwards to reduce the effort needed to compress the weatherstripping.

I'm hearing a rattle in the back which sounds like one of those wires with tape/plastic on it hitting plastic. Drove around with my wife in the back and she is pointing to the area behind the Luggage side lower finisher LH--see image below. She says it is right behind the grill.

Anyone find their rattle around this area--how difficult is it to remove this and solve rattle? I figure it might be easier than having to make appointment and get the dealer to do it.

Anyone interested in reviving this thread? I am, now that I'm driving continuously on very bumpy winter roads the rear suspension or hatch noise is concerning me.

So there was three potential issues described under the scope of rear noise: 1) items such as the jack not secured properly, causing noise when hitting bumps 2) general noisiness of the hatch area due to the fact that this is a hatch vehicle, and the lack of sound deadening material 3) The hatch itself not latching securing in cold weather. I'd like to add a 4th potential source of noise: the rear suspension itself.

I'm becoming concerned about my rear suspension as it's very loud when hitting a serious of medium to large bumps on a continuous stretch of rutted icy road.

On normal roads when I hit individual bumps there is no nosie at all, regardless of the size of bump, the suspension sounds fine and no noise.

But when I hit a series of medium sized bumps as described above, I hear a very distinct, loud "knocking" noise. The question I keep asking myself is if this is normal for this particular suspension, or is there a problem? The noisy suspension combined with the "echoey" hatch area really gets hard on the ears after a while, and causes me to turn up the stereo. We've had a TON of snow here again this winter and the roads are brutal.

Any thoughts are appreciated, how does everyone find their rear suspension on the Rogue, particularly on rough and bumpy winter roads? Thanks guys!

Have you checked the suspension? It's quite common for snow and ice to 'build up' in the coil springs, suspension arms, etc. which can reduce suspension travel and cause all sorts noises.

The other source of popping noises could be due to stiff bushings in cold weather. If it goes away when warm, it could very well be the cause.

I do get occasional knocks esp. in cold weather. But it's nothing that has ever concerned me.

What about a bad strut??? I had a similar issue last year and it also sounded like the hatch was not closed properly. Dealer thought may be the swaybar bushings, mechanic discovered bad strut. Was replaced and no more noise.

Hi Paul, good to hear from you again!

Thanks for the idea, yes I was considering this as a possibility, I'll have to get them to look at it the next time I take it in. The knocking noise does sound like the hatch is not closed properly and is banging around, but like I said it only gets noisy when I hit those continuous stretches of up icy potholes and bumps, individual bumps (large or small) don't seem to produce any abnormal noise.

Oh yeah, Phil thanks for the idea, you could be right too, the weather has since warmed to above freezing so any ice and snow would've melted away, but it'll be the first thing I check if and when winter returns.

Hey PeteK,

One other thing to do to really quiet things down back there is to put some type of noise barrier around the spare tire well. I put some rubber insulation around the spare and surrounding areas and it is sooo much quieter. It's a shame Nissan doesn't do this. This noise is typical with this design. I really notice the difference when the roads are wet.

Cheers!
