The dealer offered us $2,500 to extend the factory warranty to 7 years or 100K miles.

No we did not. It would have been easy to roll it up into the 0% interest deal, but the "finance guy's" explanation of the cancellation policy was not good. He said if you get the extended warranty, it replaces your factory warranty (4yr/60K). The cancellation is then pro-rated from day one.His example... If you purchase the warranty (7yr/100K) with your vehicle sale at day one for $2,500, and then cancel at the halfway point (3.5yr), you would be refunded $1,250. Therefore the pro-rating method starts at day one and not when your factory warranty ends (4yr/60K) and the extended warranty begins. You can purchase an Infiniti extended warranty at any time in the vehicle's life and at any mileage. The "finance guy" had a whole book of warranty tables with deductibles on some. It basically works like this... the older the car or the more miles, the more the warranty will cost. Do a search on extended warranties under some of the older Infiniti models to learn more.

I got from the dealer at the time of purchasing my car the 100,000 mile/7 year extended warranty with $0 deductible for $1926.I also took out the 4 in 1 package that covers 24hr roadside assistance, windshield repair, tire and wheel (rim) protection and dent and ding protection for 5 years for $599. Basically they'll repair small chips and cracks in the windshield; dents/dings under 2" in diameter in the bodywork; and repair or replace tires and rims that have been damaged by road hazards (I've had a blowout before in another car from a pothole that also damaged the rim...not fun). The extended warranty was a must for me - I put about 30-35k miles a year on cars, and my last one, an '04 Murano, ended up costing just under $10,000 in various repairs after the warranty ran out, and before I traded it in with 122k miles on it.

I have my car insured with Geico..if your car is new you can get an extended warranty with them. I pay about $10 per month..

Infiniti Elite is the way to go I was reading about it recently and they cover just about everything you factory warranty covers. I don't know much about the cost or cancellation policy, but I am almost positive it doesn't trump your factory warranty. I don't trust most sales man.

We initially bought 7yrs/100k extended warranty for $1999 with the car (and merged it into financing at 0%) but then I've read carefully the agreement and didn't like it at all. It was 1 paragraph about what they cover and 3 pages of what they don't cover. It was not Infinity Elite, it was some 3rd party company in Oregon... Basically the idea is you repair the car and then file for reimbursement, they then think if they will reimburse... So I've asked dealer to swap that with Infinity Elite and they did, same price but with $100 deductable.
It doesn't replace the factory warranty, so factory one runs while it lasts, then Elite kicks in... It is basically the same as factory warranty wrt what is covered and how. Dealer said lot of people prefer it to 3rd party (no wonder).
It's a good idea to look what actual policy they sell to you... It seems 3rd party is not tied to Infinity shops, but can be more restrictive in what's covered - so read the small text! And, if you get warranty with the new car, it's 30 days 100% refundable no questions asked...

The thing that really bothers me about these extended warranties is that you pay up front for something that won't take affect for 4 years (if you don't exceed the mileage). If you don't drive that many miles per year and then trade your car in or sell it before the original warranty period is over you basically lost that money. Why not invest the $2000 for 4 years then you would have the cash for repairs...if you need it.

I agree with your logic Racy, but I would purchase the warranty at the 4-year period if you decide to keep the car. If anything breaks on the EX it's going to cost $$$.

This is true however it's cost effective to buy it at the time of purchase as the cost rises with the more miles that are on the vehicle. I don't sell them or have any dealing with the selling of them I just know what I have read in the literature. The coverage is the same no matter when you buy it, it seems easier to buy it with the new car financing and have it all rolled into one payment. Rayc325 is right ion saying that if you plan to get rid of the car before the warranty it may not be something you need to buy, its definitely something they make money off though so I am sure they will pitch it to you.

Generally speaking, the advantage of buying into the "warranty" early has to do with the fact that prices will increase as time goes by. Also it is cheaper to get coverage before your original warranty expires. Another issue is that if you fall behind on your service schedule, you may not be eligible for a "New Car" plan later on down the line. That being said, there is no difference in price that is based on mileage for vehicles still under 36,000 miles. (At least with us, dealers may vary on this.) The value in buying in early is that you don't have to worry about being eligible at a later date, and you can be sure that the cost will go up not down in the future. (I don't sell Infiniti warranties, just Nissan. This is just my perspective on the topic)

there are a couple of good threads in the M45/35 forums -- check them out. $1995 for 7yr/100K sounds pretty decent. ONLY get the Infiniti Elite factory extended waranty. Anything 3rd party is a BIG can of worms and a pain in the Arse to collect on.
