Tanabe medalion concept G uber thread

i am thinking about getting this exhaust for my 240sx vert' but dont know if anyone has had any succes with it. I trust tanabe as a good parts maker but dont see how an 80mm pipe will fit up to my cat. will i have to get an aftermarket cat? or weld it on? btw 80mm is about 3.15" which is huge, but i plan on going turbo in the winter or spring.

just wondering if anyone has any thoughts, should i wait to get exhaust so i can do it when i do the turbo? does pipe diam. really mater? and are silencers a pain to deal with?

yea you should probably wait until you go turbo before you buy and install the exhaust. with N/A, if you have a 3.15" pipe, I think you'll have backpressure problems. And yes pipe size matters. like I said, you need to keep a good back pressure, so you dont want piping thats really big when you have N/A. with turbo, it has been said, "go as big as you can without going deaf" haha. Silencers aren't at all a pain to deal with, but you might as well shove a potato in your exhaust. all they do is restrict the exhaust flow, simulating a smaller pipe, which in turn makes the car a bit quieter. While doing this, you car will run like crap compared to without the silencer. I'm not a master at exhausts so correct me if I'm wrong. hope it helps though!

Dyno proven multiple times that NA KA does not lose anything with 3" piping.

And yes it will fit. I have the Tanabe Super Medallion Racing exhaust on my coupe. I would recommend a 3" high flow cat (Catco).

im not sure what exhaust I will go with but Titanium is teh ballz. For about $400 more than your basic GReddy setup you drop like 70-80lbs over stainless steel!

Uhm, a stainless entire turbo back application should not hardly weigh a total of 80lbs, much less to lose that much compared to Ti.

IIRC the Ti setup for the s-13's weighs in around 10lbs, not sure how much the stock weighs to be honest. those are just the numbers that popped into my head when I went to look on the shelf for them. I could be wrong, it has been known to happen...from time to time...

I would guess (complete guess) that my stainless 3" catback weighs about 40-50lbs (only a muffler and pipe, no resinator).

Edit: Quick search shows stock S13 exhaust and cat combined are 41lbs.

Ti is probably saving 30-35 lbs at most.

I r totally corrected still 35lbs is not bad in the weight reduction game. outside of Carbon fiber body parts and doors and replacing the windshield you would be hard pressed to drop that much weight in just one area/part of the car. Wait! forgot about back seats, but some of us would like to keep those, for non racing related issues

so your saying that a 3+ in. pipe will give me backpressure problems,
and a silencer is a simulation of a smaller pipe by restricting exhaust flow, which makes my car run like shift?

well then why dont i just get the 3.15" pipe then and have my car run fine?

and how will i get my 2in. stock to fit to my 3.15 in.?

no he is saying 3 inch or greater diameter exhausts have been proven to give no problems at all as far as back pressure is concerned. and you just need some adapters to go from 2 in to 3in exhaust pipe. you should be able to pick something basic up at any autozone/trash auto type place on the cheap. and the silencer is just something in the muffler area that reduces noise by reducing airflow. its so you can blast it on the weekends and be loud rowdy and fast and still stay off the po-po's radar during the week. I wish that I could have my cake and eat it too (silencer AND high flow exhaust) but thats happening around the 7th of never so I wouldn't sweat it. thats not to say there aren't high flow exhausts that sound great and come in under 95 Db, just not with the system you are thinking of using.

alot of people are using diferent setups for their KA-Ts, but i dont know of anyone that has the tanabe. I have heard the sounds of tanabes other exhausts and they sound good so i am willing to try them out.

Mine will be KA-t soon (hopefully, have parts but need a little more). But I do love the sound of the tanabe, although a little loud being NA.

well, the plan is not to stay NA for long, but we all know how that story goes. i dont think i will mind the silencer, or the noise, as long as it doesnt sound a folgers can on a straight pipe like most custom exhuasts sound like.

Sorry... what is a High flow Cat?? a cat with diarrhea? Just joking.. I'm running 3 inch straight back, but am using a Flowmaster 20 racing exhaust mounted after my downpipe and then straight back out. Now I am SR'd, but sound is good and only gets real loud after about 3500 rpm... my set up only cost me about $125.00 and is loads lighter than stock. I went this route to get everything going cheaply. There are a few sites out there that provide sound bytes to see. Good luck..

one reason i liked tanabe is cause i have seen they have pretty good ground clearance. I saw some pics of other 240sx exhaust, i think it was the N1, and that was way to low. does buddy club have good clearance? lmk? show images maybe?
