This is straight out of the service manual...
You need to release the fuel pressure prior to removing the filter!
You have to pull the fuel pump fuse (Fuse #17 behind the change holder on the far left side of the lower dash) and then start the engine. The engine will stall out.
Crank it two or three more times to eliminate the pressure in the fuel system.
Turn the ignition off and put the fuel pump fuse back in.
Remove the fuel filter (located above the rear differential) and replace with a new one. I used a genuine Nissan fuel filter (about $12).
Check to make sure the fuel lines are not damaged and are properly tightened before you attempt to start the engine.
Start the engine. You will have to crank the engine longer than normal in order to build up pressure and get the fuel pulled through the lines and back up to the engine so make sure you have a good battery. When I did mine I almost had an oh sh*t moment when the engine didn't start up as quickly as I thought. After the engine turns over a few times, it'll start.
I had no problems following these procedures and felt it was fairly easy. Good luck!
