My husbands QX4 is broke! P0731

I like your site, I have gone through like 14 pages and read a whole lot of threads before I decided I should just join up and ask my question because you would know!!
So my husband brings his car home and tells me it is broken! I went out the next day to look at it, when you start it, it is fine for a minute then you hear a faint grinding sound. You can shift the selector into all the gears and it is fine but none of the gears engage. If you press on the gas a bit it sometimes engages but not always. I got out the handy dandy code reader and pulled the codes off, one is an 02 sensor, no biggie but the other is P0731 it says gear 1 incorrect ratio. Anybody know what this means? Anybody had this happen? What is the fix?
This is a 1997 QX4 automatic w/4X4
Any help would be great.
Thanks

He might have a loose connection in the tranny. That's just my guess though, seeing as I've never had this problem.

check out Nissan TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) 19970416 it applies to 1996 Altimas and 1998 Frontiers. its not for the same car but it might give some insight to what the code actually means. To access it you need a friendly guy on this board who has access to Nissan TSBs or ALLDATA access

I have never ever seen this code before and would guess it would have something to do with either an input or output shaft speed sensor for the transmission, possibly the magnetic revolution sensor on top of the tranny maybe? Any guess I have would be quite circumstancial as I have never seen this code before and I have never dealt with anything like it
