  Intelligent Key

Is anyone else concerned about what they would do if they lost their intelligent key? I used to keep a key hidden on my vehicle but it is no longer possible to do that with the intelligent key.

Greetings and welcome to NICOclub! We hope you enjoy the Murano forum, I am glad to have you here.

That is a good point. That would be a bad thing to misplace and not be able to find! The "I-Key" is also rather expensive especially when compared to the price of a regular key. Hopefully since you don't have to take your keys out of your pocket or purse, there is less of a chance you would misplace them.

Yeah, it's something I-key owners need to work around.

I guess you could keep another hidden in the vehicle if you take the battery out. Just stash it in a small case along with the battery in case you need it.

Anyone know if we take the battery out of the key and put it in the backup power slot if it is still able to start the vehicle? It should be able to but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I ask because I would be concerned storing that battery long term in areas where it gets really hot and I imagine the same can be said for those areas that get really cold as well.

That's a good question. I know very little of how the I-key functions. It may have an RF activated chip (like the chip they put in the keys of other vehicles). If that were the case then you wouldn't need to store a battery along with the fob.

If I get the time this weekend I'll try this out.

I tried this out this morning by removing the battery from the fob.

The fob (or perhaps the key) does have a proximity chip. When the battery is removed you can still start the car by inserting the fob in the keyport.

Nice find! That answers the question!

One last note. I verified the proximity chip is in the fob, not the key.

So you could stash a fob, minus battery and key somwhere on the car.
