Ok, so as the title states i'm having a bit of a problem, and an annoying one at that. For background, the computer is a sony vaio desktop, pentium 4, e.t.c, e.t.c.

In the computer's memory card reader, when I put a memory card in, I get a little message saying "usb device not recognized." So I just did the next best thing and went to wal-mart and bought a usb card reader. Upon plugging it in, I get the same exact error message. I opened the case up and unhooked the built in reader from the motherboard, and tried my wal-mart reader again. It works. I thought I had fixed my problem but while looking at pics, it closes my screen out and says the same error message. So i'm stuck with no card reader and was wondering if theres a remedy for my problem? I tried downloading the card reader driver from Sony and no-go. I'd either like to get the built in one or usb one working, I don't care which one. Any ideas?

Hmmm...

Have you tried going to the Windows Update or Microsoft Download page and getting the latest USB Mass Storage Device drivers there?

If that doesn't solve it, it could be a hardware issue. Especially considering that there seems to be a conflict between the two devices, I get the feeling that's probably your real issue.

No I didn't try the microsoft update, I'll do that and see how it does and update in a bit.

If I had a hardware issue, would my wireless usb mouse and printer be affected? B/c those 2 usb devices work fine...

Ok, so I got the latest usb update from good 'ol microsoft's website. The external reader I purchased now works! woot right? Not...

I put the comp on standby and went to do some stuff. I came back a few hours later, get the computer off standby, and now its throwing the error message again.

So is there a fix for this? Dumb question but would doing a system restore help me out at all?

How many USB ports does the computer have? Where are they on the case? Which ports are which things going into?

The reason I ask is because sometimes built-in USB hubs can cause this issue. So if your mouse and keyboard are plugged into the back of the PC (the "real" USB ports) but the card reader is being plugged into the front (which are more than likely running off a hub pulling off the main USB hardware) then the hub could be the reason.

Try running the card reader off a different USB port, like one of the ones your keyboard and mouse are using that work to see if you still run into the problem. I'd just unplug the keyboard and use that port for the test.
