i have been told that a car with a salvage title can only be insured for liability only. you cant get full coverage.

but it may vary between providers.

It depends on the state but an actual salvage title vehicle has to be inspected to be registered and insured. After inspected they are deemed road worthy and considered a re-built vehicle, then they can be insured and registered. It also has to be stamped on the b pillar that the vehicle was "rebuilt from salvage."

fully. my family has owned 4 as far as i can remember. 1 was sold, 1 we still have, and two were totaled. Insurance paid us more than we had paid for the car in both cases. I'd say go for it, but only if you know how much the car was hit in the first place.

I know in Illinois an individual can't buy a salvage vehicle, repair it and then get an inspection for a "rebuiltT title. Only shops and dealers can get the car inspected.

California is different though, I'm not sure of the specific laws in your state so call your DMV. If you do the work yourself you might have to find a shop or dealer that will take the car to get inspected for you. Also, keep all your receipts for parts, in Illinois you have to show proof that the parts you used weren't stolen.

You're from Cali - the land of retards (as far as politicians and government goes) so make sure you double check with some locals or look up local laws first.

Your best bet is going to be calling your insurance agent and asking them about it.

And for what it's worth, my last 240 had a salvage title after the engine was hydrolocked, but I was still able to fully insure it. But that's here in NC.

Yeah i would only buy a car from someone that does it for a living (buys post-accident cars at auctions and fixes them and sells them) Most of the time you can request a car, they will look for a good deal and do it how you want.

well my jetta gli was totalled after i got it. insurance co not only insured it BUT full coverage after it was fixed. now my buddy has a cressida andits a salvage as well. his insurance pulled the car off. so i am assuming it depends on the company. i am running American Commerce through AAA. hes got Esurance.
