Upgraded my '63 NL320 to electronic ignition!

What a cool project!

Starts INSTANTLY now... idles SO smooth! Can't wait to take it out for a drive.

The motor (A12)... Nice, basic design.

Distributor location (removed):

"New" electronic ignition distributor (from an early 80's L-series motor):

Had to remove the drive from the old points dizzy and install it on the new EI dizzy - Big pain in the butt!

...and, had to modify the OEM distributor mount to accept the larger diameter of the EI unit. Not pretty, but it works!

A little reminder of what we're working with:

sweet **** boss.

how long did it take ya and how many bandaids?

"Now you may ask if I regret it, if I would do it differently if I could, if I would take it back. NOT A CHANCE!!!!! I went for it. I put it all on the line. I always will. I knew what the consequences would be if I failed, and I was willing to accept them. So any of you reading who might be feeling a twinge of sympathy, don't. I made my decisions, and I accept the consequences. I'm no victim. And to those who are thinking about preaching at me, don't bother. I won't hear you. I haven't accomplished anything in this life worth remembering by playing it safe. That's boring to me anyway."

So I take it the lil A12 had trouble starting? In any case good job Greg, how'd you figure out to upgrade it that way? Had any progress with the s30?

Nice! I think I've found something to do to my A15 in my 210 now
How hard is it to convert to an EI dizzy?

Not hard at all... I have a "mentor" in Oregon who knows 320's FAR better than I ever will... He showed me the process.

No bandaids needed, but I did cuss and throw a few tools whe I got stumped by the wiring... early 320's were positive ground, and on first look, I could SWEAR that mine was...

I went trhough all the hassle of modding the dizzy, fabbing a spacer, swapping the drive end, pulling the VC, finding TDC, prepping the new EI dizzy, and it wouldn't fire.

OK, maybe I have it 180-degrees out (easy to do).

As I'm swapping the wiring around, I have a buddy over (Jason, aka rotorimp, who you remember for building the KA-T in Project Vert).

Jason peeks in and says, it's already been converted to negative ground.

He spins the dizzy back around, we throw on the cap and she fires on the first click of the key.

It's a great mod to avoid the hassles of a points-type distributor. You'll get a MUCH stronger spark, quicker starting, better mileage, cleaner running, etc, etc, etc.
