You're trying to start a fight aren't you?

I'm currently running regular because that's what the engine came with and I'm too poor to do a full Amsoil conversion. That will be the next step.

I've been changing my own oil for over 40 years every 3k-3.5k miles. No need to waste $$$ on synthetic in my opinion. Pages of pages have been written on this and other forums. I don't believe any new automobile comes with synthetic oil nor do most maufacturers recomend its use in the owners manual..

Just curious, have you ever tried a synthetic? I'm not trying to start an argument, just curiousity.

Also, what speed to you cruise at on the highway? I find your fuel economy remarkable.

I use synthetic without fail. Frees up much needed horsepower, and allows the engine to be flogged easily. I tried blend and it was good, but not as good as synthetic. I use Mobil 1.

However, I was wondering if Royal Purple was better than Mobil 1. Or, is it a waste of money to go from Mobil 1 to Royal purple?

I use royal purple because i can get a deal through one of my friends and pay absolutely nothing for it. I will not go back to dino ever. I think telco should try the synthetic and see if he likes it. I already know the answer to that question though, 401k

You are right!---401K

We all love Telco, though. No matter what, i still think Telco's advices are good ones.

No argument and a great question.

No I've never tried synthetic because: 1- I'm too cheap and 2- I change oil myself every 3-4 thousand miles so why spend so much for oil? I drive 2k miles a month. I have a 50 mile commute, 100 mi per day.I managed to shift my hours from 5 AM to 2 PM so I miss the traffic both ways. Bumper to bumper on the way home due to a flipped over vehicle blocking 3 lanes of traffic today. Anyway, I cruise between 65 and 75 MPH on cruise control with A/C on.My 25MPG mileage equals what I got back in the 60's and 70's with my 50HP VW 4 cylinders Beedles. NISSAN, what a great company for giving me a 298 HP V6 stick with such outstanding performance and gas mileage.I'm no chemist or engineer but my use of regular 87 octane gasoline and regular motor oil has done fine by me and my many previous vehicles. I'm too freeking old to change & why should I? BTW, I have gotten over 28 MPG on a couple of tankfuls a few times between NJ and Florida.

I can't seem to pop 20-21 MPG. I need to find out if they changed my spark plugs when the swapped out my engine.

I also need to replace my underbody tray and maybe work on driving slower than 80 on the FWY.

If I ever become an Amsoil distributer, I'll be sure to send you a case.

I switched to synthetic 3800 miles ago. I consistently see a 2 MPG increase in mileage (26.5-27 MPG cruising at 80). I plan to keep using it once and if I figure the extra upfront cost is worth it.

Corvette's Evo's, GTR, Porsche, Ferrari, VW just to name a few come w/ synth oil. And ALL VW's 2004 and up it is reccomened in the owners manual. The Evo's oil cap says MOBIL1 in it.

I spun a rod bearing in my last car, and my machinest told me that if I had not been running synthtic oil i would have wasted the motor. Only damage was to the rod that the bearing spun in. It got hot and blued it. The crank survived.

Thanks for your correction. I'll never own any of those but its good to know anyway. I stand corrected.

Best way to save money is to buy it and change it yourself. I bought 5 quarts of royal purple and a napa gold filter for $42. I know shops would have charged me over $100. Also Infiniti told me to use synthetic for my G37. They said the motors now a days are made for synthetic oil.

Synthetic oil are generally far superior to conventional oils. Not do they reduce friction at a wider range of temperatures and RPMs, they have much better cold start properties. Since this is wear engine wear occurs most, this is an important property. Synthetics also do a much better job of keeping the insides of your engine clean.

My own observations when removing valve covers was that motors using conventional oils have a layer of varnish all over it. On the other hand, a valve cover removed from an engine running synthetic was very clean. This includes a motor I know ran conventional oil for a significant length of time and was switched to synthetic. I prefer to know this varnish isn't forming on the more important parts of the motor as well.

Here's a good article providing a pretty basic overview of synthetic oils:

http://www.carcraft.com/techar....html

You can run a search on google for much more technical info. This stuff isn't snake oil guys. Even with shorter maintenance intervals, synthetics simply have a big advantage over conventional.

As a side note, Costco sells a case of Mobil1 for a few bucks cheaper than you might find at the auto parts store.

Walmart sells the 5 gallon jug of M1 for under $25 IIRC. Costco also has a good price.

I use Royal Purple in my G...she loves the 10w-40. The higher weight seems to combat the oil burning tendency that plague some of the REV-UP engines...or I just have one thats good

5 gallons or 5 quarts? 5 gallons is enough for like 4 changes. Not to mention trying to pour 5 quarts of oil out of a bootle the size of a bottle that sits atop most water coolers...
