I was just wondering if anyone has ever dropped their spare tires from under their truck and inspected them...

I for one have never had a flat in my frontier but a guy I know was going to use his spare as his 4th tire when he went to buy a new set of tires he dropped his spare and it had rubbed these huge gashes into the sidewall of the tire...I am talking a good 1/4 inch gash into the tire in about 4 places...His vehicle had like 50,000 miles on it so it got me wondering...

Well I dropped my spare just yesterday and I got the same thing... Not near as bad but I only have about 13,500 miles on my frontier, but it had already rubbed the B down about a 1/4 inch on the BF...

Its kind of scary because what if I had been out of town and had a flat would it had held up enough to get me home? and with the extra ware on the tire it can very well cause a blow out and cause me to flip the truck... I do think its a bit of a safety hazard, the guy I was talking to had went to two different dealerships and they told him this was NORMAL so he called Nissan Corporate and they are going to have someone meet him at one of the dealerships, I am thinking just to skip going to the dealership and just call Nissan corporate first...

Any way guys just trying to let you guys know so we don't have any unexpected problems when it comes to really needing your spare...

If I was you I would check my spare and see whats up, better to be safe then sorry...If enough people complain it may cause a recall notice, their has only been one other recall so 2 in 3 years of this model ain't bad.

and just as a side note... Im not here to bash frontiers I truly love my truck and was just awestruck that something like this is going on... I bought mine new and haven't looked back, I understand not everything is perfect, but its going to be how Nissan Handles this is what is going to count...

I also drive a 93 240sx vert, I have Nissan Running through my veins I hope they fix this problem, if not it might have to go further then Nissan Corporate and really I don't want that...

also I have noticed after looking around the forums a lot of you guys have been complaining about sqeeking noises, even in the xtera's and the pathfinders, could this be the source, I bet when the bottom of the body rubs against the tire it would cause some squeeking... a quick test to see if its the spare tire, is after you drop it to see if its rubbing and you see that it has been drive around with out the spare tire under the vehicle if you have to put it in the back of the bed or what not and see if it solves the problem... I have too noticed the sqeeks just never put 2 and 2 together till now I guess that means the drives home from work need to be radio free for a couple of test runs because I play my stereo way to loud to be able to hear any piddly sqeeks

Found the same tire rub issue when I had a flat-not driving with that until resolved by Nissan. Great truck though!

Sounds like you need to put some rubber stoppers from frame to the rim so tire does not rub, or tighten up the tire to frame so it does not move and rub.
