Interested in a SoCal drift event? No BS, just sweet, affordable drifting.

After attending a recent drift event and talking with a few friends in the drift scene, it was brought to my attention that there is a serious lack of drift events in SoCal.

What's worse is that the events that are available are disorganized and costly with poor course layouts, inadequate staffing, and TOO MUCH DOWNTIME.

So here's what I'm proposing.

A 4 area drift event; 2 beginners areas, 1 intermediate, 1 advanced.

To be held in OC or the IE.

Schedule:

6am tech inspections and beginners "classes" begin.

8am The courses open up. Drifting is available until 3pm. No breaks, no course redesign (unless unanimously voted for), NO DOWNTIME.

3:30-5:00pm Competition- Cash and other prizes for those who sign up - Audience and Staff Judge

Maximum # of Drivers:48 people (this averages out to 12 drivers per course).

Food will be available in two ways:

Prepay with your event ticket and get a discount.

Pay at the event at regular price.

Healthy, great tasting...no compromises!

Other Optional features:

Tire mounting on-site
WE Get U (WEGU) Tires program
Fluids and Parts
Equipment/Tool Rental
Minor Repair Services (Zip tie and duct tape experts)
Live DJ

So what should you expect? A first class drift event that leaves you with two things to do:

DRIFT & Enjoy!

Reply and choose a poll option. Suggestions are welcome.

Please reply with your questions. I want this to be the BEST drift event you'll ever go to.

Nathaniel, I got your email I will just make my reply to everything here.

that is a VERY optimistic plan. The amount of work and organization that goes into just having 2 separate tracks is mind bottling and you are trying to do 4? my head hurts just THINKING of the logistics involved and not only that, but the amount of work it will take during the day to keep everything going smoothly. you are going to need someone running it (probably multiple people) with some serious experience in the drift department with organizing events. NOT just a driver. have you ever organized events before? its a LOT harder than it looks. you would need a minimum of 16-20 volunteers for JUST the staging lanes throughout the day. plus cone chasers, door workers, bla bla bla bla.

where are you planning on holding this? you are going to need a VERY large facility to accommodate 4 different tracks/setups. when we run 2 tracks, the lots are generally 1000 feet long, and 400+ feet wide (including a pit area). and thats just for 2 tracks. 1 "advanced" 1 beginner small track. you have to plan for runoff and a safety buffer between all tracks, lanes of traffic getting to and from the tracks, also spectator foot traffic in the area.

im not trying to discourage you by any means, you just REALLY need to understand what you are getting into. again, organizing events is NOT easy.

im here to help if you have any questions man.

Hi Joe,

I've actually taken most of that into consideration.

I have about half of the volunteers already. Most of them are experienced drifters. A few have experience as staff, the others are quite competent.

Truly, my biggest worry right now is getting serious people and equipment for dividing the tracks up.

I contacted a local shopping mall to see if they would rent out one of their larger parking lots, but that brings up the problem of blocking entry to the track areas and that is WAY to big of a headache.

I also contacted The Great Park Corporation which owns the old El Toro air base and left a message for their marketing company.

The National Orange Show in San Berdu was also contacted.

I'd love to use a parking lot from a shopping center that could use the publicity, but security and access is too much of a problem like I said earlier.

Once I have some numbers from these venues, I'll contact the insurance underwriters about which is the most cost effective.

As far as organizing an event...I've assisted with quite a few and usually wished I was coordinating because I know that I can run a team. I used to be a route supervisor for a sign spinning company and had teams from 10-20 guys.

I try to live by the motto "All the way or not at all"

Whats wrong with Just Drift or Touke? i know they hold a lot of events, more than what we get up here in Nor-Cal. 2 of my friends attended a JustDrift event and said it was worth the drive and track time was plentiful.

i think its awesome that you wanna host events, i want to do the same some day, but so cal has the drift game on lock. to say that socal doesn't have adequate enuff drift events is comical. NorCal is finally getting somewhere, but we are still far behind socal, just be grateful of where you are (as far as drifting goes).

Empty lots or cool i guess. not close to actual track. I have made the 7+ hour drive to WSIR and it was worth it. I wouldn't make the tirp for a cone course event.

I'm curious, what event did you attend that was so bad? It IS mind BOTTLING to say that theres not enuff socal events. they have one almost every weekend, and like this weekend, theres all star bash and another drift event goin on at the same time. theres more than enuff seat time down there and i think you might have just had a bad experience.

I'm NOT hating on you. I wish you the best of luck and i DO hope you have some sick *** events. If you have great success, we could use a good event coordinator up here. peace.

I don't like WSIR

With gas as expensive as it is, why the hell would you want to drive 200+ miles to WSIR to deal with 105-110 degree weather?

Especially since most of the drift scene is in So Cal (I don't consider Rosamond SoCal).

I just did a quick look for events locally. EVERYTHING is being held on the Balcony at WSIR.

I don't know about you, but personally, if I was driving from say San Diego, I'd rather drive 100 miles through cities than desert. I'd also rather drive on freeways than speed trapped roads with joshua trees and roll-o-coaster dips.

For all those in LA, OC, and IE, it's a quick 20-40 min drive. Meaning you could call a friend for a quick tow if anything were to go amiss.

That's just me.

So in the end we're talking:

Closer
Cooler
More convenient
Less BS
More ammenities

To me, that's a no brainer.
