I did not drill thru my bars. As you can see in photo 3, the clamps are under the rail and extend into the box where they are screwed down on the inside of the box in photo 5.Goblin wrote:Man that looks sweet! Makes me wish I went with a darker color vehicle. After years of dark colors and black I went with white. Anyhow, looks like you drilled your roof rack cross bars? Am I correct? If so, why? My clamps mount right over the bars and into the box without any problems.
I haven't driven with it on yet. I'm leaving for vacation soon and it'll get a good test. I'll let you know how it goes with the mileage/wind noise when I return. It holds 20 Cu Ft.kerrton wrote:So do you notice a lot of wind noise, and have you noticed any reduction in gas mileage? It looks like a very large bin, do you know what the capacity is, I imagine it's at least 20 cubic feet? I'm thinking about getting one from Sears when I head down to the States, Sears Canada doesn't seem to carry them.
The rear loading is not a problem and you can load shorter items in it from the sides."I'm only 5'6" so I have to pack a folding step stool in the car. It doesn't take up much space as it folds flat but it is essential if I want to reach the box. This box fits fine on the factory rails (compatible) and Sears does offer a smaller box that will most likely not impede the antenna. It's about a foot less in length and holds 13 cu. ft. instead of 20. You may find it for less online. I believe it's the same design as mine and should fit just fine on the factory rails. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_1...mv=rrkerrton wrote:I'm still looking for a roof top box, and I was going to stay away from a rear opening box because it seemed like it would be awkward to open/close and load. What has your experience been like with the rear opening design?
I really would have preferred to use the factory low-profile cross bars to mount a box, but it is so dissappointing to learn that they are fixed in place, and you can't reposition them to various locations along the main rails. So I went with the generic Thule rack but if you are just hauling a roof box and nothing else, the Nissan cross bars would be much better, however when shopping for roof boxes it is very difficult to determine what the required spacing is for the cross bars - i.e. will the factory bars be compatible with the box? Also I don't like the long boxes because then you have to remove the radio antenna. Anyway, I'm having a rough time figuring out what to do because I really need the extra capacity.
