  Self Fixing Paint???

Yesterday I read a little blurb in one of my issues of modified that said that recently Nissan patented a special plastic polymer Clear coat that is self repairing. Allegedly if you scratch the outside of the car (medium to light scratching only) over the course of the next few days/week (depending on the temp and light conditions) the scratches gradually fade out. Is there anything special you have to do while prepping the car for painting before you use a clear coat like this? and will nissan sell me this or do I have to have it done at a dealership? even with only dealing with medium surface scratches the photos I saw where nothing short of amazing and I would pay a large sum of $$$ to have this kind of exterior mod. anyone else heard of this before?

I read about it as well, I'm sure one if not all of the paint manufactureers will be seling some variant just like the color change paints of years ago, the question is will it be compatible with standard paints or will you need a special basecoat

It's definitely true the new FX comes with it and I think the Ex or new G sedan has it I know it's one of them but not both. It's a polymer based clear, the way it was described to me and I have seen it work on some of our new cars, is that it will infact blend small surfaces out over the course of anywhere from a day or two to a week depending on ambient temperature and sunload. Infiniti has only licensed Dupont at this time to make the special top coat. Its a neat trick though.

I am sure any Dupont bodyshop will have it before long. IMHO not a cost-effective use of your money. Buffing gets the job done for any light scratch that the "self healing" clear can take care of. Spend your money on a small purpose-built buffer, some wool and foam pads, good chemical and physical based buffing compounds as well as some polish and you can "heal" the car yourself.
