  bad valve seals

how hard/exprnsive would it be to replace them and that would I have to remove to get to them?

I think that's why Im burning oil and spitting this black oil looking liquid out the exhaust...but then again the engine has 182k miles on it lol

if you're spitting black liquid it's most likely an extreme rich condition, when a stem seal goes bad it tends to lean intot he sylinder when the engine is shut off and them when you start up you get the grey cloud of burnt oil

check your FPR and make sure your return line flows free and clean, oh and check your )2 sensor and make sure the CHTS is connected and good

okay, I've got the ominous grey cloud at startup, Though I figured it's likely the seals. But what is an FPR or a CHTS?

But the best way to do the seals is actually to remove the head and have the valves/cam done at thesame time right? my head is an N47 head, is there anything I should watch out for when having it done? There was some discussion about ford valve seals being better? I had this same problem in my old 2+2 as well.

FPR = Fuel Pressure Regulator
CHTS = Cylinder Head Temp Sensor
the FPR I imagine you'll have no trouble inding, the CHTS on the N47 is located int he lower thermostat housing, it's got a plug like the injectors rectangular with 2 wires

and yes pulling the head and doing the valves att he same time is recomended, some will stuff the cylinder with rope to support the valve while replacing the seals but one false move and you gotta pull the head to retrieve the dropped valve so may as well pull it IMHO

the N47 head isn't one fo the mroe desirable heads, if you can come up with a different head you might considder chaning, the P90 has the most desirable combustion chamber shape, but it's volume is large, great for boost not so much for n/a, many have shaved the P90 and used cam shims to correct the geometry to get the compression ratio up, the N42 is very ppular, same volume and valve diameters as your N47 but without the restrictive sleaves in the exhaust runners, the E31 has the smallest combustion chamber and will railse your CR by about .5 IIRC but the valves are small, you can have the alrger valves fitted tot he E31 head just gonna cost ya a biyt more at the machine shop

f the temp reads hot, it's most likely correct, most likely buildup in the radiator, and oil pressure dropping at warm idle is normal, oil consumption however indicates a problem, burning or leaking neither is good and should be addressed
