  Noise coming from my rear.

Hello all,

This weekend was the first time i had the opportunity to ride in the backseat of my own car. While i was back there, i heard a noise that resembled a bad wheel bearing. I only heard the noise in between 5-25 mph. As the car gets faster, so does the noise . Not sure what it could be. Going to the dealer Tuesday for an oil consumption test(AGAIN) but don't really want to pay the $100 for the diagnostic. Would anyone know what it could possibly be..? Thanks in advance.

Could be a worn tire. Trying rotating the tire's and see if the noise is still there. On another note, it could just be normal road noise that sounds odd to you because it's your first time in the back seat.

After going crazy trying to figure it out, the next door neighbors kid said hey, maybe it's your tire. I laughed and told him to go watch the Telitubby's or something. Well folks i took the tire off and low and behold it has flat spots, all on the inner tread. I guess i need to watch telitubbies.

Cupping? Seldom happens on just one side unless something on that side is bent.

Make, model, size of tire and miles?

I used to experience cupping on every set of tires that I used on my Cadillac STS. I never figured out why it was so hard on tires. Traded it on on the M.

I guess it's OK if you watch the Telitubbies w/him. Just don't let him see you're getting more of a kick out of it than he; make him think you're an adult...

Nothing is bent. I had the dealer look at it last Tuesday. It's a Goodyear RS-A. It was on the car when i bought it last August. I've put about 10k miles on the car since then. Im pretty sure the tire was brand new, it still has around 6/32nds on it.

Ahha! That there is the problem, IMHO. Change this tire out when you can.

The RS-A a fundamentally mediocre tire. Yes, it is relatively quiet and yes, it has long tread wear, but just about everything else on this tire is pretty pathetic. Handling is poor - dry or wet - and the braking is poor. Prone to tramlining as well.

Of course, Goodyear makes another tire that is far superior - my current favorite - the Eagle F1 GS-D3. In a 245/45-18 100W size, it is the right tire for a 2003/4 M45 - in non-winter conditions.

It is really sad that Infiniti (along with a number of other car manufacturers) insists on using the RS-A as an OEM brand.

Unfortunately RSA is a generic Goodyear name. Each RSA tire in each size is a different design, even their wonderful police tire is an RSA.

How may miles are you guys getting out of the RSA...assuming you keep them till they are worn..

I bought a 06 M35 with 51K miles.....has the RSA's with decent tread left. I am assuming that this is the second set on the car. They are lousy but i hate to spend $1K+ on new tires with so much tread left on the RSA. Please tell me that this has to be the second set and that they wont last forever.

Sounds like the Teletubbies is a useful program for auto maintenance tips. I'll be recording the next show.<P>
Maybe it'll provide some insight into the steering rack issue the 06m35x seems to have.

To your original post header -- I have the same problem after a visit to TacoBell... but seriously, dump the RSA's.... look at the F1's but ALSO look at the Yoko's --- I installed Yokohama Avid W4S 245/45/18's on my Y34 (2003). They now have a little over 20K on them and still have nearly 1/2 of the tread left. These tires are amazing in wet and dry - check out the TireRack's review on these. They also manage a treadwear number of 400 or 420. A VERY quiet tire too; I will most likely be replacing these with the SAME tire when the time comes (assuming it's still available...) - and I WAS a diehard Michelin guy.
