How much clearance is needed to do a clutch R&R in a driveway?

Enough for a floor jack and the transmission to be able to slide out.

I did mine in the driveway. I put the front on ramps and then brought the rear up to the same height on stands. The clearance you get from this should be adequate if your suspension is stock height.

Just did mine...errr like three days ago.Make sure you have plenty of room or putting the transmission back on is a HUGE PAIN. We had our jacks as high as they can go, and yet it still wasn't enough room really.I'd say if you can go to a car lift thats your best bet.

I had mine a foot and a half maybe 2 feet off the ground. Plenty of room. Did it by hand with myself and a buddy on a level concrete shop floor.

haha same here.

For the me the hardest part though was lining up the input shaft into the engine. Gah, that was a pain.

to BoBa524,

If you are doing the clutch install in the driveway, make sure you have enough room for wrench clearance and leverage. Especially when unbolting the driveshaft. Those bolts can be a bugger to remove.

LoL I'm gonna say this cause it's happened... Take out engine and transmission together as one. No don't listen to me. Yes listen to me.

Ok, well I can unhook everything that needs to be unhooked int he engine bay to remove the engine with a partner in like 20 min. Then like another 15 min for the driveshaft and transmission mount. Keep in mind this is with a parter. Then when you have the engine/transmission out with the cherry picker you and a buddy can lower the thing almost to the ground and put a jack under the transmission while you unhook it. It makes it much easier to put back together.

I guess I'm just crazy like that...and that's how you have to do it with some of the fwd cars I've worked on... So i thought i'd be pretty easy and I wanted to be cool like that.

^^^very true. Taking the engine out with the transmission as a whole does make clutch replacements a lot easier to get back together. Ive done both equally as many times and it always goes smoother if you take the whole kit and kaboodle out. I seriously sometimes have fought with the mating the engine and transmission for hours...like many hours. Sometimes, once you pull the motor at least 2 or 3 times, it become a breeze.

I may think about that...

I'd like to do it on my own, but getting a partner that I trust with tools is hard to find

My dad used to be great but he is getting older now (60's).

I am hoping throwing on a master cylinder/slave cylinder and getting rid of the dampner gets my clutch back on track...I just spent too much on a repair and my wife's car looks like it's going to need a new a/c compressor. As soon as it stops raining here I am hoping to it tests out as a pressure switch or just clutch.

I just finished mine last week. i had the front end about 18" off the ground.. unbolted the motor mounts, and let the transmission swing down, i got all the bolts (even the top ones) with a impact and 3' of extension..

This is true, but I work in a tractor trailer shop, on the trailers specifically, so we got some pretty beefy jack stands. I think we use 12 or 15 ton stands. They weren't at full hight either, I wouldn't feel safe under the car with jack stands that were maxed out.

A little pricey, but cheaper than death...http://www2.northerntool.com/p...9.htm
