If it's a chain, I thought that it never needs changing!? But this raises another question, does the CVT belt have to be changed at some point? (only have 4,000 miles on mine at this point)

Yes, the CVT innards will eventually need to be replaced. Save a LOT of money, because it's not as easy, neat, and tidy as replacing a timing chain.Remember... Subaru's first CVT, when they failed, were 9 times out of 10 replaced with a manual transmission because the refit was cheaper than the repair.

According to Nissan, cvt has an indefinite lifespan. Fluid should be getting checked starting at 160,000km.

Timing Chain replacement is not listed anywhere in Versa maintenance schedule. They are usually a replacement item when a engine overhaul is done, but not a maintenance item. I've driven cars with timing chains over 200k miles with no problems.

Generally timing chains don't ever need replacing unless something goes wrong or the engine isn't maintained properly. And even when timing components do fail, it's usually other components like guides and not the chain itself that are the problem.

Yall apparently aren't use to KA 240s then. The chains need replacing on them or your motor will get screwed.Maybe other motors aren't much of a problem.

My 93 had the KA and it had over 130k miles on it and the timing chain was never touched and it was my daily driver/track racer

You were taking a chance though, hardly know anyone who doesn't change the chain on KAs after 100k miles. It is actually recommended service on 240s. Again, apparently the Versa is different.

Exactly correct. Belts have various schedules from 100K to 160K, but a chain is generally known to last the life of the vehicle. It is not a maintenance item. brucek

'89-'90 240SX had a problem with timing chain guides if memory serves me. '91 and had the twin cam engine and were fine.

That's what every manufacturer will tell you about every transmission.

True....so maybe it was just the KA24E's with the timing chain problems.

That's what I was referring to in my above post. It's not the chain itself that's the problem. It's the guides for the chain which fail and can lead to chain failure (either by wearing against the block or jumping from excessive slack). The chain itself would be fine if the supporting hardware didn't fail. | Quote, originally posted by my_new_v » | True....so maybe it was just the KA24E's with the timing chain problems. |
Actually, it wasn't. There were other Nissan engines (especially the VH45DE) that had the same problem.

The top guide breaks on the KADE as well, most just remove them and Nissan stopped putting them on the S14 KAs.
