Hey will the SR20DET pass smog check in California? I am very interested if it does or not, because I am seriously considering the swap if it will pass. Thanks!

no.

You can make it pass the sniffer, but you will fail a visual inspection, unless you know who to pay off.

hmmm...so it'll pass california smog, that's good I don't plan to register it in cali though, I still have partial residence in Oregon and their emissions testers wouldn't be able to tell in the visual screening...as long as it says Nissan it'll pass :D

it may pass sniffer, but what he is missing is cali isnt only sniffer, its smog....SR will NOT pass smog, or visual inspection.

So if the srde20det doesn't pass smog, then a whole bunch of smog stations are getting lots of under the table cash????? Anybody in oregon know it'll pass DEQ?

and a lot of us have un inspected cars. Its only a $60 ticket.....illegal inspection will be about 125-150...so i figure i can get 3 tickets in a year for that price : )

heres where the USA loses me....i dont get why you guys are so concerned with smog? here, no one cares. no inspections are done, there is no list of illegal engines, the shops will install no prob, the companies will ship any engine...etc....its like there isnt even any smog laws here.

i think it might have something to do with all the people and pollution in places like california, but im not sure. its crazy how strict it is down there though

Well you gotta think to, most of the places you buy things from and install things cover themselfs by saying "for off road use only." Thats how they get away with it

I guess some places are less concerned than others, because where I live there are no check stations you just drive your car and pick up license tabs when you need to and there is no inspections. No need for cats.:ylsuper

Washington Rocks!!

HC limit is 220CO limit is 1.??NOx limi is unlimited (no test)

no visual of any kind.

As long as you pass the sniffer you're golden.

Does King County do things differently? In Pierce it'severy two years once your car is, I think, 5 years old. Everytime the title is transfered to a new owner, emissions is required.

I actually live up in Skagit county over the summer, and over most weekends, but I go to school in Everett. So my car is registered in Skagit county where there is nothing. It is pretty nice.;)

and I thought I had it good!!

that's cool...it's fifteen bucks a test. Maybe they figure that some counties don't have enough pop to warrant the test.

even with the emissions, I've been told that our standards are fairly loose.

Kind of on the same topic....Is there anyone in North Carolina w/ a swap, and if so, was there any problems with your emissions test?

A stock SR can pass the dyno testing in California. It will not pass visual however. Your NOx numbers may be a little high, and if you've done anything like new cams, port and polish, new manifolds, don't have the stock downpipe, forget about passing smog. Those were all key parts in getting my buddy's SR to pass. Even then he passed NOx by a hair. But that was with an aftermarket air filter on it though.

I Live in Oregon Now (From California). Oregon DEQ you can pass, because there is no visual. Just the sniffer (which is pretty lax anyways). But that is only for the portland metro area. I live in southern oregon where there is no smog , so i don't even need to run a cat (however i do need to get a new one, because i like clean mufflers, not black ones). In california, a guy who rents from my grandmother, works at a smog shop (in the bay area). So i am covered wherever i go

My RB is smog exempted for life, that is I will NEVER have to smog it, even when I sell, my car is registered in California, with California plates and is currently registered. The only reason I am asking for some help is because the JDM smog exemption king "hazw8st" is deployed in Iraq and won't be back until next year.....

Need some "help" while he is gone.... we miss you "hazw8st"......
can u get into more detail on how u got that smogg exemption?

iirc he hooks up ethanol to your motor, which is supposed to make your car exempt of smog because its in favor of the environment or something like that... people just take it out after the process is done... btw, its carb exempt too, which means no reffing

Highschool??? wow. hey, just a question, if a cop in Cali pulls you over and cites you for a SR swap... what is it? just a fine? or do you have to "Fix It"

ok this is what i learned from calling the BAR (bureau of automotive repair). Of course it isnt an engine replacement so you will need to get a visual. What you need to pass is the emissions parts. Think of it like this, you basically are building a car from scratch, you will need what every other car on the road has, emissions regulating parts. Get all the original parts put them on when you swap the motor and schedule with a ref. You get three tries with one payment of so many $$ or $$$. ont put any aftermarket parts on until you get the sticker from the ref. Im sure you will, I would ask him what companies are ok'd by the BAR

I love how we can't let old threads die gracefully

I cleaned up some of the needlessly stupid posts as this is a pretty useful thread
